Taekwondo fever sweeps Wolf Nation!!

Coupeville sent a strong group of performers to Saturday’s “Battle on the Island” taekwondo tourney in Langley, bringing home a staggering collection of medals.

3rd grader Tenley Stuurmans claimed four titles, and she was joined on the podium by fellow CES students such as Finley Helm and Ben Shaw.

Helm, a 1st grader, was the only novice white belt in the room, but showed no fear and no desire to back off.

The six-year-old master of disaster claimed third-place in three events (Traditional Forms, Pro-Tech Weapons and One-Step sparring), with just six weeks of training under her belt.

Meanwhile, Shaw, a 2nd grader, made off with a first-place medal and a pair of second-place finishes while vying in Freestyle Form and Weapons events.

Stuurmans, Helm and Shaw were joined Saturday by fellow Coupeville warriors Marin Winger (3rd grade), Lydia Kelly (2nd grade), and Logan Kelly (Kindergarten).

Don’t mess with Tenley Stuurmans.

The Coupeville Elementary School 3rd grader is only one tournament into her taekwondo career, and she’s already a four-time champ.

Stuurmans, daughter of Scott and Sarah, stepped on the mat at the Island Christian Academy in Langley Saturday, emerging with seven top-three performances.

She captured titles in Extreme Weapons, Creative Weapons, Extreme Forms, and Creative Forms.

Toss in 2nd place finishes in Traditional Forms and Traditional Sparring and a 3rd place in Combat Sparring, and Stuurmans went home covered in medals.

The younger sister of soccer sensation Lyla Stuurmans, and a cousin, niece or granddaughter to about 10,000 Coupeville legends, Tenley is creating her own niche in the sports world.

She started taekwondo last spring and trains at Armstrong’s ATA Martial Arts School.

CES teachers pump up the volume!!

Cop karaoke, your moment in the spotlight is up.

The other rage sweeping the nation over the past few years has been teachers and support staff lip-syncing to “What Does the Teacher Say?,” a twist on the Ylvis hit “What Does The Fox Say?”

Now, Coupeville Elementary School has jumped in with their version, and, as in all things, Coupeville 1, Rest of the World 0.

He shoots, he scores!!

Like father, like son.

Coupeville hoops coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh was a soccer sensation back in his younger days, and now his son, Chayse, is coming for all the old man’s records.

The younger Van Velkinburgh, who is headed into the second grade at Coupeville Elementary this fall, is proving to be a pitch prodigy.

While he’s only seven, Chayse is already advanced enough he plays alongside booters several years older.

He and his squad, the Deception FC, stormed through the field at the Starfire Xtreme Cup in Tukwila this weekend, capturing the title in the U10 select gold division.

Van Velkinburgh started all four games on defense.

When he wasn’t locking down rival shooters, he also moved forward at times, punching home a goal and recording four assists.

   After sweeping three games Saturday, Coupeville’s 4th/5th grade SWISH boys hoops squad brought the big trophy home.

“We are the champions … of the world!”

They went, they saw, they conquered.

Coupeville’s 4th/5th grade SWISH boys basketball squad swept three games Saturday en route to bringing home some nice hardware.

The Wolves entered the day seeded third in a six-team tourney, yet left Skagit County bearing the championship trophy after winning the 2018 D-Glacier Division Tournament.

To get to the podium, Coupeville knocked off the Sedro-Woolley Hoosiers 30-10 in the opening round, then upended two teams which had first-round byes.

After blasting Granite Falls 26-17 in the semifinals, the Wolves shocked top-seeded Sedro-Woolley Blue 23-21 to take the title.

“Our boys played till there was nothing left,” said Coupeville coach Jon Roberts. “Defense that shut down the top scorers from the other team and unselfish passing to create opportunities that helped us rise to the top.

“Hard work all year has paid off!,” he added. “So proud of these boys. What a great season.”
