Staying connected, even while apart.
That’s a big part of the plan for Coupeville Middle School teachers and staff, who crafted this video for their students.
They may be away from each other, as the world deals with the COVID-19 pandemic, but, in the words of Geoff Kappes, “We love you, we miss you, and we can’t wait to see you again at CMS as soon as it’s safe to be there.”

It works for middle school stars like Lyla Stuurmans, as well.
Spring sports were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic, but track and field athletes may have a new outlet.
Athletic.net, the clearing house for monitoring results from across the nation, has launched virtual meets which any prep track star can participate in.
Athletes participate on their own, while practicing social distancing guidelines, have their performances recorded, then see how they do against other athletes from across the nation.
Weekly prizes are offered, as well.
“Your safety and health are of utmost importance at all times,” the website said. “Please follow all guidelines set forth by national and local officials, schools and parents.
“Virtual events are intended to help you stay active and motivated while training and exercising on your own. We all miss the sport and competing together in one location; we know you do, too.
We can all use this time to enjoy those close to us and compete with everyone else from afar!”

Gone, but not forgotten.
Senior athletes at Coupeville High School, like those all across the state, lost their spring sports seasons when the COVID-19 pandemic shut things down.
Friday night, for 20 minutes and 20 seconds, the Class of 2020 was reminded that their sacrifices are not going unnoticed.
CHS coaches lined the parking lot in front of the elementary school, while keeping proper distance from each other.
Then the lights of the stadium behind them blazed on, lighting up the night from 8:20 to 8:40, as cars drove by amid much honking and some hootin’ and hollerin’.
It was part of a state-wide effort, spurred by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and athletic directors.

Central Whidbey Little League officially cancelled the 2020 spring season Thursday afternoon.
With the COVID-19 pandemic having shut down much of society, the decision was not unexpected.
The league is offering three options for those who had registered their children to play baseball or softball.
Refunds will be issued upon request, or parents can choose to roll over this year’s registration fee and use it for the 2021 season.
If registration prices go up next year, those who roll over this year’s payment will NOT be required to pay the difference.
A third option is donating this year’s registration fee to CWLL, with your money being used to help the league continue to function.
Those who have registered should receive an email Thursday from the league concerning their options.
“Please know that CWLL and its Board of Directors and our many volunteers are as disappointed as most of you and your children are regarding this season,” said CWLL President Gordon McMillan.
“Please also know, that it is our firm commitment and intention that our league will be fully prepared to enjoy the 2021 season and beyond!,” he added.

The courts were alive with the sound of tennis balls being whacked by rackets.
And then, silence.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought a brutally-quick ending to the spring sports season, preventing Coupeville High School teams from playing any contests against rival schools.
For a Wolf tennis team which offered a mix of returning veterans and bright-eyed newcomers, that’s a shame.
But even if their season ended too soon, we can still take a moment to recognize the netters and their coaches.
