Reagan Callahan and family launch Senior Night festivities. (Julie Wheat photos)

Every step of the way has been a building block.

Through rain, frequent ferry rides, a bee sting here or there, injuries, and countless hill runs, the seniors on the Coupeville High School cross country team have been crucial in the rebuild of their school’s harrier program.

And they’ll remember their time with CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting fondly.

“I am so glad I participated,” Noelle Western said. “I’ll look back at the memories I have from it for the rest of my life.”

That’s a sentiment shared by Aleksia Jump.

“Every mile I’ve covered has been a step towards achieving my goals, and I’m incredibly grateful to be here.”

Coupeville cross country gets its props.

The PR people like the Wolves.

Coupeville High School has one of three runners featured on the advertising for this fall’s state cross country meet.

Seen in action from last year, when he was a sophomore, Ethan Walling motors along between a Lakeside girl and a wheelchair participant from Cheney.

Walling, who jumped sports and is playing football for CHS this season, was part of a Wolf boys’ squad which finished 9th in the 2B team standings last year in Pasco.

Getting a nice lil’ pop of hype for her program is always a win for Coupeville running guru Elizabeth Bitting.

“This is kind of cool,” she said. “Out of thousands, one of Coupeville’s was chosen! That doesn’t happen every day!”

They stand alone on the mountain top.

Placing four runners in the top nine Thursday in Mount Vernon, the Coupeville High School boys’ cross country team ran away with a team title at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

It’s the third league title in program history, following a shared title in 2022. Other than that, you have to go back to 1977 when the Wolf boys ruled the Cascade League.

It also pulls Coupeville male runners even with their female counterparts, who won league crowns in 1982, 2021, and 2022.

Not bad for a cross country program which was revived in 2018 after lying dormant since the early 1990’s.

For CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting, who has been the driving force behind the rebirth and growth of the harrier team, this latest accomplishment is something worth celebrating.

“What a season! I am so proud of these runners,” she said. “They have pushed through illnesses and injuries and are peaking when they need to be.

“Just about every runner who ran this course last season set a personal record at today’s race.”

Tearing up the 5,000-meter course, the Wolf boys, who were led by third-place finisher George Spear, finished with 46 points, holding off Mount Vernon Christian (46) and Evangel Classical (55) to claim the title.

Spear not only set a PR Thursday but ran the second-fastest time by a Wolf boy in the modern era.

He edged past Danny Conlisk, Carson Field, and Mitchell Hall, and trails only Tyler King, who won a state title in 2010 running as a Lone Wolf without a team.

Devon Wyman cruises for the finish line.

Coupeville’s girls, who got a third-place finish from Mikayla Wagner, also finished strongly Thursday, earning third with 57 points, trailing only MVC (26) and Friday Harbor (43).

Up next for the Wolves is the Westside Classic, set for Saturday, Nov. 1 at University Place. That meet is the qualifier for state, and CHS sends 12 runners.

Barring any changes between now and then, the lineup will be Wagner, Aleksia Jump, Ivy Rudat, Devon Wyman, and Allie Powers on the girls side of things.

The boys will be Spear, Cyrus Sparacio, Ezekiel Allen, Kenneth Jacobsen, Beckett Green, Ossian Merkel, and Isaiah Allen.

“This really was an amazing season.”

Wednesday marked the end of the road for the Coupeville Middle School cross country squad, creating mixed feelings for coach Amber Wyman.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this team!” she said.

“I’m sad that I won’t see these amazing athletes daily. They worked so hard and so many of them got PRs!”

The Wolf harriers closed their campaign by competing in the seven-team Cascade League Championships in Langley, earning four top 10 finishes in the individual standings.

Anna Powers hit the tape in second place, while running mates Sarai Dangerfield and Henry Purdue both claimed fourth place.

Lincoln Wagner rounded out the top times with a seventh-place performance.

The CMS boys placed second in the team standings, while their female counterparts were fourth.

Ready to blaze a trail. (Elizabeth Bitting photos)

“What an amazing afternoon!!!”

Coupeville High School cross country coach Elizabeth Bitting was sky-high as she and her runners returned from Bellingham Thursday after competing in the Lake Lap Invite.

The event drew 15 schools to Lake Padden and offered them a 2.6-mile course to test their running chops on, and the small-school Wolves held up well against top-level rivals.

Overall, the CHS girls earned fourth place in the team standings, besting marquee programs such as Sehome, Bellingham, and Squalicum.

Meanwhile their male counterparts finished sixth in the varsity race and seventh in the JV rumble.

With the season entering the stretch run, the stellar team-wide showing greatly pleased Bitting.

“Some of these runners are truly starting to look like their old selves,” she said. “So many powerful finishes!

“I cannot believe we only have one more race as a whole team.

“These athletes bring me so much joy. I am so proud of each of them.”

Up next for Bitting’s crew is an appearance at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships next Thursday, Oct. 23 in Mount Vernon.

The Wolves are ready to pounce.
