It was prime time to tune up for the postseason.

Competing Saturday at the 21-team Bellevue Christian Track and Field Invitational, a pack of Coupeville High School athletes brought the regular season to an end with a bang.

After this all eyes turn to the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships May 7 in Mount Vernon, followed by districts and state.

Saturday’s royal rumble, which went down at Sammamish High School, drew a wide range of schools from across multiple classifications, providing a stern test for the Wolves.

Bellevue Christian won the girls’ team title, with Lynden Christian and East Jefferson hot on its heels, while Sammamish carried the day in the boys’ competition, with Nooksack Valley and BC rounding out the top three.

Coupeville’s boys claimed 13th, while its girls finished 18th.

Ready to blaze a trail. (Elizabeth Bitting photos)

“What an amazing afternoon!!!”

Coupeville High School cross country coach Elizabeth Bitting was sky-high as she and her runners returned from Bellingham Thursday after competing in the Lake Lap Invite.

The event drew 15 schools to Lake Padden and offered them a 2.6-mile course to test their running chops on, and the small-school Wolves held up well against top-level rivals.

Overall, the CHS girls earned fourth place in the team standings, besting marquee programs such as Sehome, Bellingham, and Squalicum.

Meanwhile their male counterparts finished sixth in the varsity race and seventh in the JV rumble.

With the season entering the stretch run, the stellar team-wide showing greatly pleased Bitting.

“Some of these runners are truly starting to look like their old selves,” she said. “So many powerful finishes!

“I cannot believe we only have one more race as a whole team.

“These athletes bring me so much joy. I am so proud of each of them.”

Up next for Bitting’s crew is an appearance at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships next Thursday, Oct. 23 in Mount Vernon.

The Wolves are ready to pounce.

It made for great team building.

Coupeville High School cross country runners and coaches teamed up this weekend to participate in Ragnar, covering ground from the wilds of Blaine down to the Southern tip of Whidbey Island.

“Other teams go to camp, we ran RAGNAR,” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“They all ran amazing, their splits were phenomenal, their energy was off the charts, they pushed back their tiredness, the memories they made were priceless.”

The Wolves were financed by a variety of folks, including the Coupeville Booster Club.

“I wanted them to pay for nothing and just enjoy the experience,” Bitting said.

With Ragnar being a unique competition, it gave the Wolves a new perspective on what they can accomplish both as individuals and as a team.

“This relay changes how you look at races,” Bitting said. “You run your leg then immediately jump back out to cheer on your teammates … no matter what time of day or night that might be.

“You run, eat, sleep, repeat! It was truly a great experience. I hope I’ve made sone Ragnarians for life!!”

CHS cross country, which finished third among high school teams, had two vans operating under a “Running with the Pack” banner.

The roster included:

Van #1:

Elizabeth Bitting (Coach)
Aleksia Jump
Allie Powers
Kelly Powers (Driver)
Ivy Rudat
Mikayla Wagner

Noelle Western and friends ran in Bellingham Saturday, putting a cap on a successful summer. (Kerry Western photo)

“What happens when Coupeville attends a relay at Lake Padden? DOMINATION happens!!!”

Coupeville High School cross country coach Elizabeth Bitting was riding a natural high Saturday after she, her fellow coaches, and a ton of Wolf runners rocked the joint in Bellingham.

Running at the Lake Padden Relays, Coupeville harriers, who competed as “Evolution of a Runner” to reflect the difference in ages of its many competitors, burned up the trail.

Competing on a 2.59-mile course around a lake, with each of four runners putting in a lap, the Wolves closed out their “Summer Fun Runs” in style.

Now, it’s on to regular season competition for both middle and high school athletes, with Saturday’s runners hailing from multiple sports.

Cross country, soccer, volleyball, and track were repped, with current Wolves joined by CHS grad Tate Wyman, who has some time to kill before heading off to college in Oregon.

Bitting, who ran as part of a title-winning coach’s team, was thrilled to see all five Coupeville squads place at the event, which drew 72 teams from near and far.

“Everybody had an amazing time,” she said. “It was fun to see the results of all the hard work they put into their summer runs in this type of event.

“So proud of each and every athlete that ran, no matter what sport they participate in during the school year,” Bitting added. “WAY TO GO WOLVES!!!”
