And things end on a happy note.

Eight days away.

As practice continues to play out, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ hoops squads are getting closer to their first action against someone not wearing the same uniform.

Opening afternoon is Thursday, Dec. 1, when Sequim comes to Whidbey (3:15 tip-off).

In preparation for the 10-game season, the young Wolves got their first taste of the photographic life recently when John Fisken wandered by the gym.

As the season progresses, we’ll have a lot more pics, and you’ll be able to buy glossies for Grandma over at Fisken’s site — http://www.johnsphotos.net/.

The hard-court boys are about to come back.

Coupeville Middle School football wraps up this afternoon with a road game at Chimacum, and then five days later hoops begins.

The first day of practice is Monday, Nov. 7, with the first game three weeks after that.

Coaches Bob Martin (8th grade) and Randy King (7th) return to helm the ship.

CMS goes with a staggered schedule due to gym space, and the Wolf girls start their season Jan. 30.

For now, you can print and laminate the boys schedule below, while keeping an eye on the school or league websites for changes or updates.

All home games tip at 3:15 PM.

The Gunslinger rules the land.

Daniel Olson (my former “manager” at David’s DVD Den) is one of several Coupeville athletes traveling up-Island this spring to play with Oak Harbor’s Babe Ruth baseball squad.

Ulrik Wells and Gavin Knoblich, who will be freshmen at CHS in the fall, are also on the team, while Olson, bound for 8th grade at CMS, is dazzling on the mound.

Firing BB’s from the hill, Olson torched Mount Vernon in his most recent game, tossing a three-hitter in a 15-3 romp.

He whiffed six, including taking down the side in order on just 13 pitches in the second inning.

Knoblich made a running shoestring catch in the same game, stranding two runners, as Oak Harbor avenged a one-run loss against the same squad two days earlier.

Oak Harbor is wrapping up its regular season and then heads off to the postseason, where a state champ will be crowned July 13 in Ephrata.

The young guns are Daniel Barajas (34), Connor Barton (13), Logan Martin (31), Logan Downes (12), Hawthorne Wolf (arms crossed) and Caleb Meyer.

They’re uniting their forces.

While they have talent, a lack of bodies is making Coupeville’s 6th and 7th grade boys’ SWISH squads unite for regular season play.

That will give the squad, which is coached by Pat Kelley, with an assist from Ben “The Brain” Olson, 13 players — with seven 7th graders, five 6th graders and CMS 4th grader Logan “The Prodigy” Downes on the roster.

The hope is the two squads will compete in the playoffs as separate groups, but, for now, they are Team Unity.

We have a new leader atop the board.

No one involved in Coupeville basketball this season, high school or middle school, has done what CMS 7th grader Jake Mitten accomplished Thursday.

Playing in his first game after turning 13, the nephew of former CHS hoops star Jason McFadyen torched host Chimacum for 28 points, almost outscoring the Cowboys by himself.

Led by Mitten’s offensive explosion — he also racked up 13 rebounds, three steals and two assists — the Wolves destroyed Chimacum 54-32.

Half of his points came in the third quarter, one of two periods in which CMS racked up 20 points over eight minutes of play.

And, while Mitten was unstoppable, he wasn’t the only Wolf who had a strong day.

Daniel Olson dropped in 12, including a pair of three-point bombs, while Matthew Kelley popped for eight, Sage Downes banked in four and Michael Laska swished a bucket.

Kelley snatched 10 boards, while Olson collected seven and both Downes and Ben Smith corralled three caroms apiece.

Coupeville was quick with the hands all day, as Kelley pilfered six steals, Olson made off with five and Downes grabbed four.

Kelley added a team-high seven assists.

Gage Powers and Alex Jimenez also saw playing time for the Wolves.
