You’re going to state. And you’re going to state. And … heck, everyone’s going to state!

Just about.

Even with Makana Stone opting out of the 800 and sprinter/jumper Lathom Kelley hobbled by a nasty hamstring injury, the Coupeville High School track and field team knocked it out of the park Saturday.

Led by a school record from Jacob Smith in the 200 and titles in three boys races — 200, 800 and 4 x 400 — the Wolves punched a ton more tickets to state at Day 2 of the West Central District 3 meet in Bremerton.

The small public school also outlasted its bigger private school rivals, with the boys finishing 2nd in the team standings in a 9-team field.

The girls claimed fourth.

Combined with its efforts from Friday, Coupeville will send 15 athletes to Cheney May 26-28 for the 1A championships, and they will compete across 18 events.

Six Wolves — Smith, Stone, Dalton Martin, Lindsey Roberts, Sylvia Hurlburt and Lauren Grove — lead the way, having each qualified in three events.

Martin was the first to lock down a slot Saturday, finishing second in the shot put.

After that came wins from Conlisk (800) and Smith (200), before the duo teamed up with Henry Wynn and Jared Helmstadter to crush the final relay of the meet.

With a top three performance needed (#4 goes as an alternate) to earn a magic ticket, Grove (3rd in the 200), Chris Battaglia (3rd/high jump), Hurlburt (4th/200) and Allison Wenzel (4th/javelin) also jumped on the fun train.

Conlisk, just a freshman, passed several foes in the final 200 meters to win his race, while Smith, a sophomore, shattered the school record to get atop the podium.

His time of 22.59 seconds is the third-fastest run in 1A this season.

Stone, who had entered the day owning one of the fastest 800 times in the state, passed on the event so she could run the anchor leg in the 4 x 400 for the first time this season.

It was a bid to bring along three more of her Wolf teammates with her to state, but it came up a bit short despite Stone thundering down the backstretch.

Still, she helped the 4 x 4 squad knock 20 seconds off its previous best.

Kelley, one of the most insanely talented, yet snake-bit, athletes to ever wear the red and black, ended his high school career on a muted note.

Having injured a hamstring when he skidded on a jump in heavy rain during sub-districts last weekend, he had limited mobility.

Proving to be a fighter until the end, though, Kelley insisted on traveling down to cheer on his teammates and gritted his way through several long jump attempts.

On a weekend when many of his fellow Wolves saw their dreams of qualifying for state come true, he stood tall alongside them.

Win or lose, in the end, one team.

They’re going to need the big van.

With one half of the West Central District 3 track and field meet in the books, 11 Coupeville High School athletes have punched their ticket to the state meet in Cheney.

Five of those Wolves have qualified in more than one event, and CHS still has another day to add to that list.

Coupeville returns to Bremerton Saturday morning for Day 2 of the district meet.

When it does, CHS will be in the mix for two team titles, as well.

Both the Wolf girls and boys sit in second place among the nine 1A schools competing.

Bellevue Christian leads 72-54 in the boys race, while Charles Wright Academy is up 73-55 on the Wolf girls.

Over the course of several hours Friday afternoon, the Wolves opened the meet by vanquishing foes from the Olympic and Nisqually Leagues en route to winning five district crowns.

Makana Stone (400), Dalton Martin (discus), Jacob Smith (100) and both the girls 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay squads (Lindsey Roberts, Lauren Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt and Stone) stood atop the awards podium.

A top four finish at districts is what is needed to earn a trip to state (May 26-28).

Joining the district winners in being Eastbound are Roberts (2nd in the 100 hurdles), Skyler Lawrence (3rd/shot put), Martin (3rd/javelin), Mitchell Carroll (3rd/triple jump), Jordan Ford (3rd/pole vault), Connor Thompson (4th/triple jump) and Henry Wynn (4th/1600).

Especially noteworthy were Ford and Martin, who both had stellar performances.

Ford smashed his own school record in the pole vault, raising it by three inches, while Martin launched the javelin almost 11 feet(!!) further than his previous-best.

Lindsey Roberts and her relay teammates will try and punch their ticket to state in two events Friday in Bremerton.

Want to risk getting a sunburn in Cheney in a week?

Than the next two days are all-important.

Coupeville will make the trek to Bremerton High School’s stadium Friday and Saturday for the West Central District 3 meet, with state berths waiting to be won.

Competing against their three foes in the 1A Olympic League as well as the best from the five-team Nisqually League, each Wolf needs a top four performance in their event to advance to the big dance.

If they finish outside the top four, there’s still a remote chance of advancing if they achieve a preset state standard.

To be safe, though, it’s 99.99% certain you want to be top four or bust.

Districts will kick off with a flurry of finals Friday afternoon, then wrap up Saturday with an all-day bonanza.

Unlike the 2A competitors, who will also be conducting their district meet in the same stadium, Coupeville and the 1A schools will have no heats, just finals, in all their events.

That means less chance to get worn down, but also puts a premium on throwing down your best performance right out of the gate.

As we look at the list of who’s (currently) in the field, remember it’s fluid.

Some athletes are battling injuries, while others may choose to pass on certain events to focus on others.

That could allow some Wolves who are currently alternates to move up and claim spots in the district field.

So, with that in mind, the schedule (with eligible CHS participants):

Friday:

3:25 — Girls 4 x 200 relay (Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts, Sylvia Hurlburt, Makana Stone)

3:30 — Boys pole vault (Jordan Ford)

3:30 — Girls long jump (Roberts, Grove)

3:30 — Girls high jump (Lauren Bayne)

3:30 — Boys triple jump (Mitchell Carroll, Connor Thompson)

3:30 — Boys javelin (Dalton Martin, Mitchell Losey)

3:30 — Boys discus (Martin)

4:15 — Girls 100 hurdles (Roberts)

4:30 — Boys 100 (Jacob Smith)

4:45 — Girls 100 (Hurlburt)

5:00 — Girls shot put (Skyler Lawrence)

5:00 — Boys 1600 (Henry Wynn, Danny Conlisk)

5:40 — Girls 4 x 100 relay (Grove, Roberts, Stone, Hurlburt)

5:55 — Boys 400 (Jared Helmstadter)

6:10 — Girls 400 (Stone)

Saturday:

10:00 — Girls javelin (Naika Hallam, Allison Wenzel)

10:00 — Boys shot put (Martin)

11:45 — Boys long jump (Lathom Kelley, Carroll)

11:45 — Boys high jump (Ford, Thompson, Chris Battaglia)

David King lays down some wisdom to his high-flying Wolf girls squad. (John Fisken photos)

David King lays down some wisdom to his high-flying Wolf girls squad. (John Fisken photos)

JJ Johnson

JJ Johnson (far left) and his teammates plot strategy.

The path is there. You just have to follow it.

With the regular season officially in the books, the Coupeville High School basketball squads stand on the precipice of the postseason, the road to the Yakima SunDome and the state tourney stretching out in front of them.

The Wolf girls (15-4), having won their second consecutive 1A Olympic League title, sit a fair bit closer than the CHS boys (9-10), but both squads have their fates in their own hands.

For the girls, it will take two wins in three games to get to state, while the boys will need four victories, and have little margin for error in the early going.

As the #3 Olympic League seed, the boys will have to win back-to-back loser-out games to get to the double-elimination portion of districts.

First up is a home playoff rumble Thursday (7 PM tip) with Bellevue Christian (8-10), a squad they beat 53-50 on the road in the first weeks of the regular season.

Win again and they travel to Cascade Christian (9-8) Saturday.

Put together back-to-back victories and they’ll still need at least one win in two road games between Feb. 16-20 to advance to regionals, which is a loser-out game — with the victor punching their ticket to the eight-team state tourney.

The girls, having earned the #1 seed, already sit in the double-elimination portion of the districts brackets and are guaranteed at least two playoff games.

Coupeville’s first opponent will be one of three teams — Charles Wright (13-5), Port Townsend (7-12) or Vashon Island (7-13) — and that game will be at a neutral site (Sumner High School) Feb. 17.

Win and they’re regional-bound, with a spot in the district championship game Feb. 20 at Foss High School first, for seeding purposes mainly.

Lose their opener, and the Wolf girls return to Sumner Feb. 19 for a loser-out 3rd place game.

Advance to regionals through either route and the girls will get a winner-take-all game for the program’s first trip to state since the 2005-2006 season.

The Wolf boys last went to state in 1987-1988.

Time to make some new history.
