Your donations keep the unique thing that is this blog alive.

As far as I can tell, no one else in the state of Washington is doing what I am doing.

Not in Seattle or Bellingham or Yakima or in some far-flung outpost where the seagulls outnumber the humans.

Here, in Coupeville, on the prairie, in the middle of a rock in the water, I write about EVERYTHING sports related.

High school, middle school, varsity, JV, dog shows, pony shows, taekwondo and auto racing, and much more.

If I don’t track it down myself, I’m easy to reach through Facebook or Twitter or Instagram, at davidsvien@hotmail.com or at a game.

If your child lives in Coupeville, and their sporting accomplishment isn’t being written about, that can be quickly changed.

I played three years of tennis at Tumwater High School, and never once saw my name in The Daily Olympian, ever, even when I played #1 singles (and got torched by a foreign exchange ringer).

Here in Coupeville, your 6th grade child finishes 44th in a middle school track race, their name, their time, and the fact they set a PR, is on the internet that evening, or very early the next morning.

That is not happening anywhere else as far as I can tell.

You play a game and it’s on the road, chances are you may get to read about it while still on the bus ride.

And, as you read this, I have published at least one article a day for 249 consecutive days.

Most days it’s more than one, of course.

We’re in May, one of the busiest times of the prep sports calendar, so it’s more like 3-5 articles a day right now. Every day.

The last time someone checked Coupeville Sports and didn’t find anything new was September 4, 2023.

And, despite the name of the blog, anyone can tell you I long ago gave up limiting myself to sports.

Robotics, theater, academics, budget battles, and much more.

I rarely say no, and, like I said, I’m easy to reach.

The blog is heading towards its 12-year anniversary, which arrives August 15.

Can I keep my daily streak alive and make it to 365 consecutive days?

Only time will tell, as somewhere out there a surprise storm probably lurks, ready to kill the power on Whidbey for a day and snap my run.

Through this all, it is important to remember I have no connection to the Coupeville School District, and it has never given me a cent.

There is no pay wall on this blog, and never will be.

Since my sponsorship ads are good for the lifetime of the site — the other day one decision which also will never change — I largely killed that revenue stream a long time ago.

So, how do I survive?

By keeping my bills very low — no streaming, and the only reason I have a cell phone is my sister pays for it so she can have access to her babysitter.

And by the grace of my readers, and their donations to the cause.

Each time I reach the point where I think, “This is probably it, the moment when I need to face reality and go back to the regular work force,” I get just enough to carry me through.

I was 41 when the blog started, and my birth certificate claims I’m 53 now, and a day spent weed eating reminds me (and my back) why I should probably have planned out my life better.

So, this is a longwinded way of getting around to reality.

If you value Coupeville Sports, if its continued life matters to you, I need your support.

You can donate through PayPal at:

Or through Venmo, where I’m listed under David-Svien, by mail at 165 Sherman, Coupeville, WA 98239, or in person, Mafia handshake style.

To anyone who chooses to support me and my ability to continue writing, my balky back thanks you.

Bonnie and Audrianna Shaw

Two of Coupeville’s best need Wolf Nation to rally around them.

Former Wolf three-sport star Audrianna Shaw and her mom Bonnie have suffered a tragic loss with the sudden death of Michael Shaw.

Audri’s parents were married 21 years.

Michael Shaw was a proud military man and will have a veteran’s burial at a later date.

As the family deals with the unexpected loss, friends have launched a meal train to help Bonnie and Audri.

To sign up for that, or help in other ways, pop over to:

Help prepare the Wolves for excellence.

Coupeville High School’s Captains Club — an athletic leadership group composed of students — is launching a donation drive to obtain equipment for those in need.

As seen in the photo above, the club is seeking items such as shoes, water bottles, and tennis rackets.

CHS Athletic Trainer/PE teacher Jessica Hillier is running point on the project and is the go-to person for questions.

With youth basketball and club volleyball seasons set to begin soon, the Wolves are putting a big push on collecting items.

Athletes in need will be able to get gear during a pick-up event at the CHS gym Saturday, Jan. 6 between 8:00 AM and noon.

“A survey, you say? Color me intrigued.” (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Do you cheer? Tumble? Dance?

Know someone who does?

Or just want to support the development of local talent?

Then take a moment to answer a survey designed to gauge interest in the immediate construction of a local high school level all-star cheer squad, as well as classes focusing on cheer, tumbling, dance, and more.

These classes range from ones for little children to adults, as well as athletes with special needs.

A group of Whidbey Islanders is also seeking experienced athletes looking to coach, volunteers to help with fundraising and advertising, and sponsors.

Donation of physical items such as spaces to train (high ceilings are a bonus) and help for athletes unable to participate because of financial restrictions are high on their list of things to do.

To help the group gauge interest levels, pop over to the form below.

Daydreaming about that indoor/outdoor swimming pool with waterfall I’ll never own. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

We’re closing in on some major milestones.

Today marks nine years and 11 months for Coupeville Sports, leaving me a month shy of the blog’s 10th birthday, which hits Aug. 15.

Two days later, CHS football begins practice, with the other fall Wolf teams taking the field Aug. 22.

Right now, this is the 9,359th story to appear on Coupeville Sports, and you can count the stories I haven’t personally written on one hand.

We’re also very close to hitting two million page views all-time and would have likely already reached that number if the pandemic hadn’t shut down all sports for more than a year.

When you write a sports blog, and there are no sports, you get creative, but readership also predictably goes down.

Though, with the return of sports, the numbers have shot back up – to the point where here in year #10, I’m currently on target to post my best numbers since the prime of the blog back in 2016.

As we head towards the big 1-0, let’s clear up a few things for those who may have joined us recently.

#1 — I am NOT employed by the Coupeville School District, and they have yet to give me a penny of financial support in a decade of being their unofficial PR agent.

If you have an issue with something I write, contact me, instead of wasting the time of school administrators. My email is davidsvien@hotmail.com.

#2 — I am NOT connected to John’s Photos, and do NOT make a penny off of his photos.

He’s been gracious enough to allow me to run his pics for the past 9+ years, but we are separate entities, and whatever money you spend on photos goes to the guy actually clicking the camera.

#3 — I may not be the only person in the state of Washington doing what I am with this blog, but it’s pretty dang close.

Find me someone else hyper-focusing on a small town and covering not just varsity, but JV, C-Team, and middle school teams on a game-by-game basis.

I’ll wait.

#4 — Coupeville Sports is free to read. Has been since Aug. 15, 2012 and will forever remain that way. No pay wall. Ever. End of story.

#5 — I understand and appreciate the pain of Oak Harbor and South Whidbey sports fans, who have been largely left high and dry with the Whidbey News-Times declining to fill its Sports Editor position after Jim Waller retired more than a year ago.

As a WNT alumni (1990-1994), it’s an embarrassment and dereliction of duty in pursuit of saving a few bucks.

That being said, I am NOT the person to ride to your rescue.

When the school athletic year is in full gear, I average 4-5 articles a day, every day, covering just Coupeville.

I can’t add two more towns and countless more teams to that.

Whidbey is too big (and gas too expensive in this economy!), my knowledge of Oak Harbor and South Whidbey sports is too limited, and my obsessive nature too likely to send me down a path to cracking up in pursuit of penning 15 stories a day.

You can start a blog literally for free, and I hope at some point someone in those towns steps up and seizes the bright, shining opportunity which exists.

But for me, I made my choice, and that’s covering sports at Coupeville schools and ballfields which sit a mile from my duplex.

#6 — Yes, Coupeville Sports is my only job.

I left the restaurant biz in 2015, and despite my many prayers, it doesn’t appear that video stores will ever return.

So, I write and write some more … and then go do some weed eating and mowing on the side as my 51-year-old back screams at me.

#7 — Yes, I will never, ever be getting my indoor/outdoor swimming pool with waterfall writing about small town sports. Sad but true.

#8 — Coupeville Sports survives because of the generosity of my readers.

You can read for free, but those who choose to financially back me, at whatever dollar amount, are the true MVPs.

Want to keep me typing away on a computer powered by three squirrels running on a mini treadmill at 2 AM? There are multiple ways.
