Coupeville football is 4-1 and earning the favor of our computer overlords. (Jackie Saia photo)

Movin’ on up.

Coming off of a 35-3 dismantling of league rival Friday Harbor, the Coupeville High School football squad jumps three rungs in the latest computer rankings.

Newman, the often-diabolical computer employed by stats hound Matt Evans on his site, Evans Rankings, has bumped the Wolves from #10 among 2B schools to #7.

Coupeville is a perfect 2-0 against fellow 2B schools this season, with wins over La Conner and Friday Harbor, while going 2-1 against 1A competition.

The Wolves beat Klahowya and Sultan, with their lone defeat coming to South Whidbey, which is 5-0 and also ranked #7 in its classification by Newman.

Next up for CHS is a home non-conference game Thursday against 2A Bellingham, which sits at 2-3 on the season.

They like living in the end zone.

Five games into the season, the Coupeville High School football team has scored 26 touchdowns en route to posting a 4-1 record.

The Wolves have split the scoring load between seven players, with Dominic Coffman (4), Daylon Houston (2), Johnny Porter (2), Logan Downes (1), and Aiden O’Neill (1) all chipping into the effort.

But there’s a titanic twosome leading the way, as seniors Tim Ursu and Scott Hilborn have hit paydirt eight times apiece.

Ursu has snagged five TD passes, while also scoring once on a run, a punt return, and a kickoff return.

Hilborn counters with six scores as a rusher, one through the air, and one off of a kickoff return.

Coupeville has four regular season games left and seems intent on picking up a playoff tilt or two.

That should give Hilborn and Ursu a chance to make a run at putting together some of the best scoring seasons in the Coupeville Sports era, which runs from 2012-2022.

Who are they chasing? Well, in Hilborn’s case, it’s himself.

Most TDs 2012-2022:

Josh Bayne — 25 TDs in 2014
Hunter Smith — 14 TDs in 2016
Scott Hilborn — 12 TDs in 2021
Sean Toomey-Stout — 10 TDs in 2018
Jake Tumblin — 10 TDs in 2012
Bryce Fleming — 9 TDs in 2012
Jake Tumblin — 9 TDs in 2013

And one fun fact.

Even though Josh Bayne was unstoppable in 2014, he does NOT own the school’s single season record for collecting either rushing or receiving touchdowns.

He ran for 15 scores, and snagged another 10 through the air that year, but the CHS marks of 16 TDs on the ground and 11 through the air belong to Ian Barron and Hunter Smith, respectively.

Advantage, home.

Coupeville High School fall sports teams are scheduled to play five times in front of their home fans this coming week, only hitting the road for three trips.

Wolf girls soccer defends the pitch at Mickey Clark Field twice, hosting Friday Harbor Tuesday and Crosspoint Academy Saturday.

It’s a split for CHS volleyball and boys soccer, which both start the week on the road, then end it at home.

The spikers travel to Friday Harbor Tuesday, before hosting South Whidbey Thursday, while the male booters travel to Cedar Park-Lynnwood Tuesday and host Mount Vernon Christian Saturday.

Coupeville’s harriers are the lone road-only team, participating in the Nike Hole in the Wall Cross Country Invitational Saturday at Lakewood High School.

Finally, we have Wolf football, which is playing this week on a Thursday, and not Friday, due to a ref shortage in the region.

The gridiron giants welcome Bellingham to town for a non-conference tilt.

Ryan Griggs (left) and Lathom Kelley, living large. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

“Yes, I’m planning shenanigans. My name is Lathom, isn’t it??”

A celebration of Lathom Kelley’s life is set for Saturday, Oct. 22.

The event starts at 1:00 PM at the Coupeville Recreation Hall, which is at 901 NW Alexander St.

Anyone who has special photos, videos, or stories about Lathom is asked to submit them to the Kelley family for inclusion in the memorial.

They ran, yes, but they looked cool doing it. L to r: Jacob Smith, Dalton Martin, Jared Helmstadter, Lathom.

From Lathom’s family:

Lathom McCrae Kelley, 25, died unexpectedly on September 10th, 2022, in a kayaking accident just off the coast of Guemes Island, WA.

He was born September 7, 1997, in Honolulu, HI, the son of Lincoln Kelley and Shawna Hunsaker Kelley.

Lathom graduated from Coupeville High School, class of 2016.

Following graduation, he earned an Auto and Diesel Technology II Associates Degree from Universal Technical Institute in Avondale, AZ.

He served as a lead technician at Halterman’s on a team repairing RVs.

He, Ashley Barbour, and her son, Beau, formed a beautiful, young family until the time of the accident.

If you knew Lathom, you knew he enjoyed life and, in his presence, you probably did too!

His strength and energy exceeded the confines of every space he occupied.

His ability to conjure up some kind of crazy stunt or be encouraged to follow through kept the Kelley household on the edge of our seats.

We know this is a shock to you all, as it is for us.

He will always resonate in our hearts and minds and will be dearly missed.

He was predeceased by grandmother Kathy Hohnstein, grandfather Bobby Mitchael Kelley, and Uncle Wesley Hammer.

He is survived by immediate family Ashley and Beau Barbour, parents Shawna Kelley, Lincoln Kelley, Brad Barbour, Janet Barbour, brother Brandon Kelley, Grandmother Thelma Kelley, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Ben Smith poses with his biggest fan, mom Deb.

He’s bona fide.

Coupeville grad Ben Smith is officially a part of the all-time football record books at Eureka College after recording his first tackle Saturday.

The former Wolf, who plays on special teams for the Red Devils, took down the return man on a kickoff during a 27-13 road win over Concordia Chicago.

With the victory, Eureka, the alma mater of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, gets to 2-1 in league play, 2-3 overall.

Smith, a sophomore linebacker, is in his first season at the Illinois school.

A former First-Team All-Conference pick while playing for Coupeville High School, he is majoring in criminal justice.
