Jason McFadyen

Jason McFadyen, still poster-worthy after all these years.

Ten days until things get real.

Alumni from Coupeville, Oak Harbor and South Whidbey are expected for the annual Tom Roehl Roundball Classic, set for Dec. 26 from 10:30-6:00 in the Coupeville High School gym.

The event raises money for scholarships given to local students by the foundation run by the legendary former coach’s family.

Roehl was an assistant football coach at CHS and helped run the Central Whidbey Youth Athletic Association for two decades before his passing in 2003.

The tourney has six teams currently registered, with at least two more on the cusp of joining the fray.

Red Pride (anchored by Mike Vaughn and Scott Stuurmans), The Coupeville Cows (featuring a collection of Shermans and Bagbys) and Central Ballers (led by CHS boys’ JV basketball coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh) will all be returning.

Tourney director Noah Roehl has also pulled together two coups.

The first is the return of Pete Petrov, standout former Wolf point guard, who is returning to make his tourney debut with the Red Pride.

Will it be enough to lift Red Pride back into the title picture?

After winning three straight titles, the Pride fell last year, with the Cows, led by tourney MVP Jason Bagby, beating the Central Ballers in the final.

The second coup is getting a team of relatively younger players to take a chance on making a run at the “old school” legends who have held court the last couple years.

The new squad, made up of players from 2010-2015, will feature Joel and Tim Walstad, among others.

The tourney will kick off with seeding play at 10:30, with the tournament round set tentatively for 2 and the championship game at 4:45.

A popular three-point shooting contest, which debuted last year, will go between the opening rounds.

The Round-Ball Classic helps to fund two scholarships, one which goes to a CHS grad and one to a graduate from South Whidbey High School.

Community support is provided by Harada Physical Therapy, Island Periodontics, Cascade Custom Homes, Jason Joiner with Windermere Commercial and DCG Engineering.

Admission to the tourney is free, but donations may be made to help the foundation’s work.

Just the facts.

Just the facts.

Work out and help little kids.

Coupeville High School’s volleyball and football squads are helping to put on a fundraiser Aug. 17 which will raise money to help with the Wolf Buddies program.

That program, restarted by CHS volleyball coach Breanne Smedley last season, teams up elementary school kids with high school athletes, during the school day and at games.

The fundraiser, called WOD With The Wolves, will be hosted by CrossFit in Oak Harbor.

WOD, or Workout of the Day, will be geared towards a “fun, high-energy team format workout that can be scaled to any fitness level.”

“All are welcome!,” Smedley said.

There is no charge to attend, but donations will be accepted at the door on the day of the event or through a PayPal account.

If you are planning to take part in WOD With The Wolves, RSVP to breannesmedley@coupeville.k12.wa.us.

To donate through PayPal, jump over to:

Amanda Gray

Amanda Gray

Amanda Gray was sassy.

Vibrant, full of life, whip-smart and not about to take no crap from nobody.

A devoted mom to her daughters Kaitlyn and Kynsie, she worked long hours at a law firm in Coupeville when I knew her, but always had time for her beloved children.

Amanda’s sudden death Sunday in Oklahoma, less than two months shy of her 39th birthday, is shocking.

She had moved across the country to be closer to family and was engaged to be married at the time of her death.

Her oldest daughter had graduated from Oak Harbor High School and her younger daughter, who I remember as a little girl from the David’s DVD Den days, has shot up in height in recent pictures.

They are now without a mother, a woman who fiercely fought for them every step of the way, who was mom and dad rolled into one.

Kaitlyn and Kynsie have both grown up into bright young women who reflect Amanda in looks, and, even more importantly, in spirit.

They have a strong family around them, which will be a huge help, but they need help, from all of us who knew Amanda, who appreciated the spark she brought to this world, who thought she was a really incredible woman.

A fund has been set up, and I hope we, the people of one community that Amanda embraced, can reach out and help her daughters in the days to come.

The fund:

The Amanda Gray Memorial Benefit

imageTime to step up to the line, CHS volleyball fans.

The Wolves are currently seeking pledges and donations for a Serve-A-Thon fundraiser they will be holding May 21.

The event will raise money to send the team to the Western Washington University summer camp.

All the pertinent info is including in the second photo above, so I’m not going to make you read it twice.

To help, go find a spiker, someone like Tiffany Briscoe or McKenzie Bailey or Sydney Autio (I’m pulling names up randomly, not playing favorites…) or contact Coupeville coach Breanne Smedley at (360) 635-2381.

P.S. — I am flat broke right now, so this article is my contribution. Yeah, yeah, yeah, move along, ladies.
