Young David learned some days it’s a hard-knock life.

Elon Musk is a trillionaire and I’m riding the free bus.

Maybe taking ’80s era high school classes centered around science fiction, death, and the proper weeding of plant life in a greenhouse didn’t set me up for the caviar lifestyle…

While my sister learned the right lessons from our somewhat hardscrabble childhood and has made all the right financial decisions, I’ve been over here, hammering my head against the wall for years, ever surprised that I’m never getting my indoor/outdoor swimming pool with a waterfall in the middle.

For the past 14 years, I’ve devoted most of my time to keeping alive the sometimes-deluded dream of obsessively documenting the sport lives of (primarily) kids living on a prairie in the middle of a rock buried deep in the Pacific Northwest.

I’ve produced 12,703 articles, as of this one, and pulled in almost three million page views.

Which is not going to scare the folks at Sports Illustrated, maybe, but is a heck of a lot more readership than you might expect from a blog which devotes a fair amount of space to middle school track and field in a town most of the world doesn’t know.

It’s also 12,701 more articles than my brief rival, South Whidbey Sports, managed to put out, cause Cow Town doesn’t produce quitters.

As with any one-man mission, there have been bumps along the way.

I started the blog in anger after the Coupeville Examiner was sold, and the new corporate owners stripped hundreds of bylines off my stories before tossing the paper itself in the trash.

It’s morphed into something much different (most days), and expanded to often include non-sports stories, even occasionally venturing to the other ends of the island, defying the very name of the blog itself.

I’ve quit a couple of times, and reversed course.

The pandemic seemingly sent me to the door, then brought me back.

And there was the 10 weeks last year where I couch surfed at my sisters in West Virginia before I hurt my foot clearing land, got an infection, and came back to Coupeville to take advantage of Washington state health care.

As I’ve slowly plowed through the recovery process, I’ve been restricted from doing the back-busting side gigs (lawn care, etc.) which have helped keep me financially afloat during the blogging years.

But I keep my bills low (rent, basic internet service, a low-rent phone), and the one advantage of not owning a vehicle since I returned to town has been the opportunity to not pay inflated gas prices.

Still, as we head into summer, I am stretched as thin as I can go, and for not the first time in the past 14 years, am in a place where the existence of Coupeville Sports is in question.

The blog has survived thanks to the unceasing support and generosity of my readers, and every time I’ve just about toppled over into the abyss, I’ve been pulled back.

Parents, coaches, boosters, alumni, administrators — up to and including a superintendent or two acting as a civilian — even one athlete from a rival school while they were still playing against the Wolves.

The support has been staggering, always timely, and greatly appreciated.

And no, despite what some might think, the school district itself has never given me a penny. Though there’s nothing to say we can’t break 14 years of precedent at some point.

There are days where I question whether I can go on, and days when I think, “I can hit 25,000 articles!”

My brain, full of cobwebs and contradictions.

So, where does this leave us?

Those three bills I mentioned (rent, basic internet and phone service) come out to a hair under $700 per month.

In mid-July, WordPress is going to want $19 plus tax for another year of my domain, then $300 plus tax in September to keep the blog alive for another 12 months.

I don’t have the $300, but I also don’t have the $19, so that’s food for thought.

In the early days of Coupeville Sports, that $300 was $0, but you produce 12,703 articles and use thousands of photos, and eventually you have to pay to preserve what has come before, so that it doesn’t get scrubbed off the internet with a keystroke.

There are many who love what I do, and some who don’t, and either way they’ve never had to pay a penny to read the words I published. Never been a pay wall, never will be, and that’s the hill I’ll die on.

I’d like to be working outdoors on the side, which would ease my financial crush, and improve my mental health.

But I know I need to (mostly) listen to my wound care doctor, who would prefer I sat quietly in a chair 24/7/365 until the (hopefully soon) moment when everything is healed.

So, while I wait for an unexpected family inheritance — not likely — or a lottery windfall — hard when you don’t actually buy tickets — I write on and watch way too many ’70s movies for free on Tubi and Kanopy, the unsung heroes of the streaming world.

This is the moment where I feel like a TV preacher, slicking back my not-really-there hair to ask you to look deep into your soul (and between the cushions of the couch) and see if you can’t scrape up some loose change.

Coupeville Sports doesn’t last 14 years without a truly amazing support system. I’d like to keep that going with your help.

Your donations? My typing fingers? A match that equals that moment when a feisty banana meets a box of cinnamon-flavored awesomeness.

As business plans go, it’s a humdinger.

I call it the “smash your head against a wall over and over again and wonder why you’re no closer to that indoor/outdoor swimming pool with a waterfall in the middle” than I was when I adopted said plan.

When I started writing this blog, publishing my first story Aug. 15, 2012, I was mad and sad — ticked that the previously independent Coupeville Examiner had been sold to the Dark Overlords of Black Press up in Canada.

Over time, Coupeville Sports morphed into something else.

Together (with me doing most of the work and you, the reader, providing key financial support), we’ve accomplished a lot.

There’s a Wall of Fame in the Coupeville High School gym now, documenting decades of accomplishments in a public way that current athletes can see and use as inspiration.

We’ve held 101- and 50-year anniversaries for the CHS boys’ and girls’ basketball programs, respectively, bringing back numerous former Wolves for one more night in the spotlight.

We saved the athletic trainer position at the school, after it was foolishly slashed as part of budget cuts — funding one of the most important employees any district can employ.

For six days shy of 12 years, we have joined together to provide Cow Town with a unique service.

I have yet to find another blogger in Washington state doing what I am doing, at least at the depth I am doing it.

I write almost every single day, even during the slow months of the summer.

At one point I published for 303 consecutive days, then got busy working for my sister on her property in Freeland, and let an afternoon slip by. The landlord’s cat will never let me hear the end of that one…

Coupeville Sports covers high school athletics, varsity and JV. It covers middle school and elementary school and community activities and events, as well.

It goes well beyond sports at times, which pleases some folks and pisses off others.

Good thing it’s a free blog then, and each person can choose whether to read it or not.

And that “no pay wall” philosophy has been there every step of the way and will remain ever so, from day one to whatever day turns out to be the last.

That’s 11,396 articles and counting.

As we near the start of another school year, I am faced again with the eternal quandary.

Even with my very limited bills, can I make it through nine more months?

That “business plan” I mentioned earlier certainly makes it trickier.

The ads you see on the blog were sold for the life of the site, so some folks have gotten a month or two out of them, and some have gotten 12 years.

If nothing else, it means when a random South Whidbey School Board member or two try to harass my advertisers and call for a boycott, they’ve already lost before they’ve begun — the money is long gone, just like those board members spines.

And anyway, like the “no pay wall,” I’m not reneging on the “you don’t have to renew your ads if you don’t feel like it” part of the “business plan.”

The first advertisers had no clue if the blog would last two articles (like my long-forgotten rival South Whidbey Sports) or 11,396 articles — they took a huge chance on me and should be rewarded for their willingness to possibly light their money on fire back in 2012.

At this point, 12 years in, if you were going to advertise, you likely already have.

Someone out there may surprise me, and if so, awesome. If not, well it’s all part of the “plan.”

I’ll get by (or I won’t) thanks to readers who choose to donate to the cause.

If you’re interested in going that route, there’s PayPal:

There’s Venmo, where you can find me at David-Svien.

Or there’s in person, Mafia handshake style.

From those who have donated publicly to those who have donated privately, I thank you.

Who knew this thing would make it to Year 12, and possibly beyond?

A partial list of stories coming to Coupeville Sports in the near future. It changes hourly this time of year.

This is unique.

As far as I can tell, there are no other web sites or blogs in the state of Washington doing what I do here on Coupeville Sports.

No one else has chosen to hyper-focus on one small town and write about everything sports-related in it – high school, middle school, elementary school.

On the fog-enshrouded prairie in the middle of a rock slapped down somewhere out in the middle of the water, you can get your athletic props — whether you’re a professional basketball star cashing checks in a foreign country or a 3rd grader.

And, thanks to my off kilter sleeping habits at times and obsessive need to document every last bit of info I stumble upon, this is all delivered on an almost daily basis.

If you go back and count the days in 2023 where nothing new was published on Coupeville Sports, you’d have several fingers and toes left to use.

Today, midday on May 17, I’m sitting at 69 stories this month — slightly more than four a day, every day — with 375 for the year and 10,145 since the blog debuted Aug. 15, 2012.

Unlike other publications which work at a much-slower pace, be they local or international, I have been free to read since day one, and will be free to read until we reach the end of wherever this road takes us.

And it is a journey we are taking together.

I may be smacking my fingers on the keyboard at 2 AM, but Coupeville Sports wouldn’t make it without the photographs, news tips, or (occasional) elbows to the ribs from you, the readers.

If it’s happening in Coupeville, or at least has some vague connection to Cow Town, and I haven’t written about it yet, it’s probably not personal.

Email me at davidsvien@hotmail.com and let me know what’s crackin’.

Last, but certainly not least, an enduring thank you to everyone who has ever donated to the cause, your support keeping me one step ahead of a return to the dish pits.

Years of abuse from working on farms, in restaurants, or moving large rocks from one side of a field to the other have resulted in a cranky back and assorted aches and pains.

But the mysterious back and body medicine sold at the $1.25 store helps, and I still have the use of my fingers — most mornings — so the blog churns on.

Want to read for free? So be it.

A time before masks. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Call it the never-ending story – whenever I think I’m out, they pull me back in.

Coupeville Sports is largely a one-man operation — though John Fisken and others provide an invaluable service by letting me use their photos — and, as such, it ebbs and flows with my moods.

I’ve been chugging along at it for eight years-plus now, from August 15, 2012 until today.

Though, from time to time, I have fallen off the rails.

Such as when I recently took a six-week sabbatical from late Aug. through the first days of Oct.

I was battered by the darkest timeline we all seem to be enduring, and perplexed by a lack of easily-available sports stories in the age of coronavirus.

So, I went off, and cleared some land at my sister’s.

While yelling a lot at the ungodly amount of dead, but still ferocious, blackberry canes which the former owner of the property allowed to run wild.

I also launched a side gig at https://flatbuttfilmfest.com/, where I post five new 100-word film reviews each morning, cause that sorta, kinda, keeps alive the video store days of my misbegotten youth.

And then, bam, without really meaning to, I returned to Coupeville Sports Oct. 2, and, in the blink of an eye, have published 21 articles in a week.

Since I’ve averaged three stories a day on here since 2012 — this is article #7,919 (not kidding) — that tracks.

Who knows where we go from here.

There are still no actual games until Jan., or at least that’s the plan right now.

COVID will have a lot to say about that, and there are side wrinkles, as the winner of the Governor’s office could change how the state deals with the pandemic, and what is opened or closed.

I also might wake up tomorrow and find out the movie blog is being bought for big bucks by Jeff Bezos, and then I get my indoor/outdoor swimming pool, with waterfall connecting the two sides.

Probably not going to hold my breath on that one…

But, the point is, no promises really. Cause none of us has a freakin’ clue going forward.

The one guarantee – as long as I’m writing Coupeville Sports, I will try and make it the best it can be.

And this is where you, the reader can help.

Do you know a student (of any age) at a Whidbey school (Coupeville, Oak Harbor, or South end) who has artwork or writing they’d like to see published?

Send it to me at davidsvien@hotmail.com and we can make it a reality.

Have a story idea — doesn’t necessarily need to be sports — or want someone to be inducted into the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame?

Let me know.

Lastly, this blog, from article #1 to article #7,919 to article #10,000(?) has always been, and will always be, free to read.

No paywalls, ever.

I understand why many sites have gone that route, but I made my choice in 2012.

If you choose to read for free, good on you.

If you like what I’m doing and want to help, however, the easiest way is to click on the link below.

Should you choose to do that, for $5 or for the full price of that mythical indoor/outdoor pool with waterfall, even better on you!

Just the facts.

Just the facts.

Work out and help little kids.

Coupeville High School’s volleyball and football squads are helping to put on a fundraiser Aug. 17 which will raise money to help with the Wolf Buddies program.

That program, restarted by CHS volleyball coach Breanne Smedley last season, teams up elementary school kids with high school athletes, during the school day and at games.

The fundraiser, called WOD With The Wolves, will be hosted by CrossFit in Oak Harbor.

WOD, or Workout of the Day, will be geared towards a “fun, high-energy team format workout that can be scaled to any fitness level.”

“All are welcome!,” Smedley said.

There is no charge to attend, but donations will be accepted at the door on the day of the event or through a PayPal account.

If you are planning to take part in WOD With The Wolves, RSVP to breannesmedley@coupeville.k12.wa.us.
