CHS coach Scott Fox discusses strategy with his team.

They took a few shots to the rib cage, but are still standing.

The Coupeville High School girls basketball team absorbed a 61-15 loss at Nooksack Valley Monday in its district playoff opener, but lives to play another day.

Now 12-6 on the season, the Wolves, the #3 seed from the North Sound Conference, host Meridian (10-12) Tuesday in a loser-out game.

Tip-off is 7 PM.

The Trojans, the #4 team from the Northwest Conference, beat Sultan 65-34 in a play-in game Feb. 8, then were nipped 42-36 Monday by NSC #1 King’s.

A loss Tuesday in the CHS gym is a season-ender for either team, while the winner is guaranteed two more playoff games Feb. 13 and 15.

Win at least one of those two, and you advance on to bi-districts, a step away from the state tourney.

Monday night was a rematch, with Coupeville facing a team it lost to by 22 points in a non-conference game right before winter break.

Things were rougher this time around, as the Wolves fell behind 19-3 after the first eight minutes and never recovered.

A ball-hawking Nooksack defense pressured Coupeville into multiple turnovers and the Pioneers converted their extra chances into quick, game-busting buckets.

Up 34-9 at the half, the host team continued to stretch the lead out from there.

Holding Coupeville scoreless in the third quarter, Nooksack carried a 46-9 advantage into the final frame, then continued to run wild with its backups in the game.

The Pioneers finished with three players in double figures, led by McKenna Wichers, who banked in a game-high 14 points.

Kora Larsen and Maya Galley added 11 apiece.

“We ran into a buzz saw,” said CHS coach Scott Fox. “They played stifling defense and precision offense.

“It started off ugly and we couldn’t get anything started. Congrats to them!”

With the game out of control and another playoff bout hurtling towards them in less than 24 hours, Fox rested his starters early, giving his back-ups a chance to play quality minutes in the crucible.

Anya Leavell came off the bench to lead Coupeville’s scoring attack with eight points, while fellow sophomore Audrianna Shaw chipped in with four.

Tia Wurzrainer (2) and Avalon Renninger (1) also scored, while Scout Smith, Chelsea Prescott, Hannah Davidson, Mollie Bailey, Izzy Wells, Kylie Van Velkinburgh, Carolyn Lhamon, and Maddie Georges saw floor time for the Wolves.

Anya Leavell scored 10 points Thursday as the Coupeville JV beat La Conner in the season finale. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

It’s simple math — Anya plus Ella equals hardcourt domination.

Fueled by the one-two scoring punch of sophomores Anya Leavell and Ella Colwell, the Coupeville High School girls JV basketball squad ended its season Thursday on a high note.

Jumping on visiting La Conner early, the Wolves built a comfortable lead, then held off a late rally to exit with a 37-32 win.

The non-conference victory caps a 12-4 season for the CHS young guns, and it brought a huge smile to the face of Megan Smith.

The former Wolf hoops star, who returned to her alma mater to coach the JV, was pleased with the record, but more with the growth she saw from her players.

“Really, really proud of these girls!,” she said. “I could not have asked for a better group of girls to coach for my first year!

“It was an awesome season,” Smith added. “These girls worked really hard to have this outcome.

“I was just the coach, they did all the hard work.”

Thursday night the Wolves were down a few players thanks to illness, but it didn’t matter.

Leavell came out ready to rumble, slapping home six of her 10 points in the first quarter as CHS built a 14-6 lead it would never surrender.

From there, the Wolves stretched the lead out to 22-13 at the half, then 28-15 heading into the fourth.

Which is where things got a little dicey, as La Conner rallied behind the play of Salena Bailey, who went off for 14 of her game-high 23 points over the game’s final eight minutes.

Coupeville didn’t crack, however, with Colwell, Alita Blouin, and Leavell stepping up to notch big buckets in the final moments of the JV season.

Colwell finished with a team-high 11 points, with Leavell (10), Blouin (7), Gwen Gustafson (4), Ryanne Knoblich (3), and Savana Allen (2) also scoring.

Natalie Castano, Claire Mayne, Jessenia Camarena, Morgan Stevens, Heidi Meyers, and Mollie Bailey also saw floor time for the Wolves.

Final (unofficial) season scoring stats:

Alita Blouin – 101
Gwen Gustafson – 78
Ryanne Knoblich – 75
Ella Colwell – 71
Audrianna Shaw – 40
Anya Leavell – 32

Savina Wells 1, Northshore Christian Academy 0.

Now, basketball is not a one-person game and the Coupeville Middle School 7th grader had a lot of help Thursday during the Wolves’ season opener.

But still, Wells pumped in 20 points across the first three quarters of play, and outscored the visitors by herself as CMS strolled to a 41-15 win.

Opening day featured just one game, and not the normal three, as Northshore only fields a single squad.

Coupeville’s #2 and #3 teams will get a chance to join the #1 Wolf squad in action starting next week, when King’s comes to town Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Thursday was a lopsided affair, as the Wolves jumped on NSA from the get-go, running out to a 13-6 lead at the first break.

Wells pumped in three baskets in the opening frame, while Lauren Marrs kept the defense honest by swishing a long three-ball from behind the arc.

From there, Coupeville went about its business, stretching the margin to 25-10 at the half, and 37-13 by the end of the third quarter.

The Wolves #1 squad is a well-mixed unit, with eight 8th graders and five 7th graders seeing action in the opener.

Age is no barrier to success, as the younger girls accounted for 30 of their team’s 41 points, with Lyla Stuurmans making the nets jump for six points and Mia Farris knocking down four in support of Wells.

Marrs finished with five, while fellow 8th graders Brionna Blouin (4) and Reese Wilkinson (2) rounded out the scoring.

Also seeing action for the Wolves were Desiclali Ramirez-Vasquez, Taylor Brotemarkle, Kayla Arnold, Madison McMillan, Skylar Parker, Kaitlyn Leavell, and Allison Nastali.
