Wolf JV blitzes RedHawks

It was a beautiful beatdown.

Getting points from 10 different players Saturday, the Coupeville High School girls JV basketball team annihilated host Port Townsend.

Toasting the RedHawks 51-11, the Wolves used the non-conference win to improve to a spiffy 9-3 on the season.

Megan Smith’s squad came out on fire and ran away with the game early, jumping out to an 18-6 lead after one quarter of play.

Coupeville’s deadliest gunner in the early going was sophomore swing player Audrianna Shaw, who peppered the nets for 10 points in the first frame alone.

After that, the Wolves steadily added to their lead, pushing the advantage to 31-9 at the half, then 43-9 after holding Port Townsend scoreless in the third quarter.

With plenty of scoring opportunities, Coupeville spread out its offensive load, with freshman Alita Blouin and Shaw tying for team-high honors with 12 points apiece.

Ella Colwell, Savana Allen, and Jessenia Camarena provided plenty of support for the dynamic duo, with each Wolf ringing up six points.

Ryanne Knoblich (2), Natalie Castano (2), Anya Leavell (2), Kylie Van Velkinburgh (2), and Gwen Gustafson (1) also scored, while Heidi Meyers, Mollie Bailey, and Morgan Stevens saw floor time.

Coupeville returns to action next week with two of its final three North Sound Conference tilts.

The Wolves travel to Shoreline Tuesday to face King’s, then host Granite Falls Friday night.

Sizzlin’ start, cold finish

They won the battle, and lost the war.

Shutting down the reigning league MVP on her home floor Friday night, the Coupeville High School varsity girls basketball squad had a prime chance to pull off an upset.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, their own offense went into the deep freezer after a decent first quarter, and they eventually fell 35-21 at Cedar Park Christian.

The loss drops Coupeville to 9-4 overall, 4-2 in North Sound Conference action — with both losses coming to CPC.

It was a disappointing result from a game where the Wolves stifled Cedar Park’s one-woman wrecking crew, Irena Korolenko, holding her to just four points.

Only problem was, Coupeville couldn’t do much better itself on the offensive end of the floor.

“Our offense went cold,” said CHS coach Scott Fox. “We executed our game plan exactly how we wanted, but a few letdowns, and untimely makes on their end, made it tough to climb back into the game.

“Kids played extremely hard,” he added. “And, like always, I’m extremely proud of their effort.”

Coupeville came out strongly, jumping to an 8-3 lead after one quarter of play.

Getting buckets from Carolyn Lhamon and Avalon Renninger, plus a free throw off the fingertips of Hannah Davidson, the Wolves were ahead, then delivered a crusher when frosh Maddie Georges nailed a three-ball right before the buzzer.

Then the baskets closed up for business.

A rough second quarter, when an Izzy Wells bucket was the lone bright spot in a 10-2 deficit, sent the Wolves into the locker room trailing 13-10.

Things got worse after the break, with Cedar Park using a 17-7 run in the third, with Korolenko not scoring a single point, to take control of the game.

Georges finished with a team-high nine points, hitting pay dirt on three-ball attempts in three different quarters.

Joining her in scoring were Wells (4), Davidson (3), Renninger (2), Lhamon (2), and Scout Smith (1), while Chelsea Prescott, Mollie Bailey, Tia Wurzrainer, Kylie Van Velkinburgh, Anya Leavell, and Audrianna Shaw all saw floor time.

Coupeville gets a quick turnaround, as it heads to Port Townsend Saturday for a non-conference tilt with the RedHawks.

After that, the Wolves, who are sitting in 3rd place in the six-team North Sound Conference, close with league games against King’s (Jan. 28), Granite Falls (Jan. 31), and South Whidbey (Feb. 4).

The final two games are home affairs.

Droppin’ daggers, winnin’ games

They don’t call Alita Blouin “The Assassin” for nothing.

Showcasing her nerves of steel and her burning desire to watch her opponents cry themselves to sleep, the Coupeville High School freshman lives to deliver daggers.

Friday night in Bothell, Blouin came through one more time, banking in a pair of pressure-packed fourth-quarter free throws to lift the Wolf JV girls to a huge road win.

With a 29-26 victory over Cedar Park Christian, CHS sweeps the season series from the Eagles and improves to 5-1 in North Sound Conference play, 8-3 overall.

Blouin’s free throws iced the win, but Coupeville jumped on CPC early, roaring out to a 12-7 lead after one quarter of play.

Four different Wolves tallied points in the opening frame, with Ryanne Knoblich and Anya Leavell pacing the squad with four apiece.

From there, Coupeville edged the lead out to 15-9 at the half, then held a 21-15 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

That was the frame where Blouin shone brightest, as she dropped in five of her team’s eight points across the final eight minutes.

Blouin and Knoblich finished with team-high scoring honors, having rattled the rims for seven points each, while Leavell (6), Kylie Van Velkinburgh (5), Mollie Bailey (2), and Audrianna Shaw (2) also scored.

CHS coach Megan Smith got quality work from everyone in uniform, with Gwen Gustafson, Jessenia Camarena, Morgan Stevens, Ella Colwell, and Savana Allen also seeing floor time.

The Wolves get right back at it, heading to Port Townsend Saturday for a non-conference match-up with the Redhawks.

The game is a make-up for an earlier one which was cancelled due to high winds which shut down the ferry run.

CMS girls claim hardwood

Basketball is booming in Coupeville.

The middle school girls basketball season officially kicked off with the first day of practice Tuesday, and the gym was overflowing with 27 eager players.

CMS coaches Alex Evans and Fred Farris will guide the Wolves through a 10-game schedule which begins Feb. 6 with home games against Northshore Christian.

Those 27 players will be divided between three teams based on skill level, with 7th and 8th graders mixed.

The roster may ebb and flow a bit between now and opening night, but after two practices, these are the young women who have committed themselves to the hoops lifestyle:

“I’m extremely proud of them”

Their will to win is off the charts.

Deep on the road Monday, having left their best game at home, the Coupeville High School girls varsity basketball squad never flinched.

They might not be 100% sure how they got away with it, but the Wolves will take their 34-33 win, head home from Granite Falls, and move on.

With one relieved coach leading the way.

“Some nights everything stops working and tonight was that night,” said CHS hoops guru Scott Fox. “But the good news is that good teams find a way to win and we did.

“We had a letdown from (Friday’s) South Whidbey game and really never found our groove,” he added. “We fought hard and made the shots when we had to.

“I’m extremely proud of them finding a way to win.”

With the victory, its third straight, Coupeville rises to 4-1 in North Sound Conference play, 9-3 overall.

Up next, after a couple of days to re-find that groove, is a major test, as the Wolves head to Bothell Friday to face Cedar Park Christian.

The Eagles (5-1, 11-5) gave Coupeville its only league loss, beating them 51-35 two weeks ago.

The Wolves have added some battle hardening since that night, pulling out close wins over Sultan and Granite, wrapped around a methodical thumping of South Whidbey.

Monday’s win was decided by the narrowest of margins, as the two teams put up the exact same score in three of four quarters.

Knotted at 12-12 after the first quarter, the game stayed tied at 16-16 at the half, before Coupeville crept ahead 23-22 headed into the final frame.

Avalon Renninger was the difference in the third quarter, netting a pair of buckets and a single free throw, while Hannah Davidson chipped in with two successful shots from the charity stripe.

With the game on the line, it was Scout Smith time, as the senior point guard swished a pair of three-balls en route to putting up nine of her career-high 17 points in the final frame.

Coupeville’s leading scorer this season, she finished with four treys and continued her steady trek up the career scoring chart.

Smith’s point totals have gone up in each of her three varsity seasons, from 56 as a sophomore, to 86, and now 114 and counting.

With 256 career points, she passed Kendra O’Keefe (244), Marlys West (247), Danette Beckley (249), and Julie Wieringa (252) Monday and is #42 all-time for a program which stretches back to 1974.

Renninger popped for a season-high 10 to back Smith Monday, while Davidson (5) and freshman Maddie Georges (2) rounded out the attack.

Also seeing floor time for Coupeville were Chelsea Prescott, Anya Leavell, Carolyn Lhamon, Izzy Wells, Kylie Van Velkinburgh, and Tia Wurzrainer.
