Get the party started…

because CHS volleyball is 3-0. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Two-plus weeks in and we’re down to three undefeated teams.

Coupeville and King’s volleyball join South Whidbey girls soccer as the last perfect teams in the North Sound Conference, but, of course, there’s a lot of the season left to play.

In the case of volleyball, none of the NSC teams have even played a league game yet.

For Coupeville, volleyball is the only one of its four fall teams which keep win/loss records to be sitting with a positive record. That the Wolf spikers are flawless so far is just a nice bonus.

The week ahead offers one nice change, in that more of the events happen at home instead of on the road, a first for this still-young school year.

CHS soccer plays at home twice, hosting Cedar Park Christian Sept. 24 and Mount Vernon Christian Sept. 28, while Wolf football welcomes La Conner to town Sept. 27.

Coupeville volleyball has a split schedule, with a home match against CPC Sept. 24 and a trip to the South Whidbey Invite Sept. 28.

Rounding out the schedule (and not counting cross country, which doesn’t have a win/loss record, but goes to King’s Sept. 28), boys tennis plays three times.

The busiest of all Wolf teams heads to Bear Creek Sept. 23, hosts Seattle Academy Sept. 25, then closes the week Sept. 27 down in South Whidbey.

Unless it rains on any of those days…

As we prepare for the week ahead, a look at where we are so far.

There’s a new team in town.

For the first time in many seasons (maybe forever), the Coupeville High School girls soccer program has enough players to field a JV team along with the varsity.

The Wolves second squad hit the pitch Saturday for a home battle with 2A Kingston, and Jackie Saia was on scene to snap photos.

The home cooking paid off.

Back playing on their own pitch after a three-game road trip, the Coupeville High School girls soccer team pulled off a late rally Saturday, earning a tie which felt more like a win.

Despite missing four key starters — Avalon Renninger, Genna Wright, Mollie Bailey, and Mallory Kortuem — the 1A Wolves played 2A Kingston to a 1-1 draw.

The tie, coming in a non-conference game, lifts Coupeville to 0-4-1 on the season.

The two teams battled through a scoreless first half, before the Buccaneers broke the stalemate early in the second half on a goal which barely slipped past the Wolf defense.

Coupeville, coming off a 1-0 loss in its last game, didn’t buckle, however, charging back to get the answering goal with a hair over 15 minutes left in the match.

Eryn Wood set the play up, dropping a pass for Sophia Martin, who banged home her team-leading second goal of the season.

It was sweet payback for Martin, who had an earlier goal waved off when Coupeville was called for being off-sides.

With the game knotted at one, the Wolf defense clamped down and preserved the tie, kicking off a four-game home-stand for Coupeville.

The Wolves welcome Cedar Park Christian to town Tuesday, Sept. 24 for a North Sound Conference game, then return to action Sept. 28 against non-league foe Mount Vernon Christian.

JV gets its turn in the spotlight:

Coupeville’s second squad made its home debut, playing a fast-paced 7-on-7 version of soccer, and the young team hung tough in a 4-0 loss.

The Wolf JV sits at 0-2 on the season.

Most important was simply getting a chance to get on the pitch and do work.

“Nice to have JV out there getting playing time in,” said Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson. “Every player got a full game worth of playing time today.”

The net showed no mercy.

Despite several strong scoring opportunities, including a handful in the game’s final moments, the Coupeville High School girls soccer team came up scoreless Thursday at Sultan.

Playing on their home turf, the Turks popped in an early goal, then senior goaltender Amanda McKay made it stand up in a narrow 1-0 league win.

The loss, coming in Coupeville’s third-straight road game, drops the Wolves to 0-2 in North Sound Conference play, 0-4 overall.

That puts them two games off league leaders King’s (2-0, 3-1) and South Whidbey (2-0, 4-0), and a game back of Granite Falls (1-1, 2-3) and Sultan (1-1, 1-3).

Coupeville is currently tied with Cedar Park Christian (0-2, 2-2), a team it hosts next week.

Having played 3.75 of its four games without its main offensive weapon, Genna Wright, who was injured early in the season opener, CHS has been held scoreless twice and has just three goals on the season.

The Wolves crashed the net hard, however, keeping the ball on Sultan’s side of the field for huge chunks of time.

Avalon Renninger had several nice runs up the left side of the field, and had one shot late in the second half which took off like a rocket, only to be speared by McKay, who read the incoming ball perfectly.

Coupeville’s defense, anchored by veterans Mallory Kortuem and Tia Wurzrainer and freshmen Nezi Keiper and Carolyn Lhamon, held up well, turning the Turks away consistently.

The few shots Sultan managed to get off after its goal were promptly snuffed out by rookie goaltender Katelin McCormick, who was playing in place of injured starter Mollie Bailey.

With the game in stoppage time, Coupeville launched several final strikes on the Turks, only to have the ball take a bad bounce here, a slight curve there, denying what could have been an overtime-forcing score.

As he reflected back on the game, CHS coach Kyle Nelson saw two evenly-matched teams, with one just getting a break the other didn’t.

“Last night’s game was just one of those games,” he said. “We were the better team on the field, but they scored on the first of two or three shots the whole night and we just could not get it to happen even though we probably had double-digit shots.

“We controlled the ball in their half for the majority of time,” Nelson added. “But give credit to Sultan for playing some good defense.”

The Wolves play at home Saturday, their first appearance at Mickey Clark Field in two weeks, when they host 2A Kingston (0-3) in a non-conference tilt.

Varsity kicks off at 1 PM, with JV scheduled to follow.

It’s the first of four straight home games for Coupeville, which plays seven of its final 11 on its own field.

JV benched:

What was supposed to be a two-game evening Thursday turned into a one-game affair, as Sultan didn’t have enough players to field a JV team.

The Wolf JV team saw its first action of the season Tuesday afternoon at King’s.

Dynasties are built one step at a time.

And give the King’s girls soccer program all the credit in the world.

Its players have worked hard, both at the prep level, and in travel ball, and they are reaping success they have earned.

The Knights have placed in the top four at the state tourney nine times in the last 13 seasons, with a state title in 2017.

King’s swept to a league title in the first season of the North Sound Conference last year, and it is an overwhelming favorite to repeat the feat this fall.

For schools such as Coupeville, small public institutions with few year-round players, it’s tough to make a dent in the armor the private school Knights have built up.

So, you take your lumps, you try and learn some lessons, and you move on, ready for another day as you try and build your own dynasty, one step at a time.

Tuesday night, playing without primary scoring weapon Genna Wright and starting goaltender Mollie Bailey, the Wolves couldn’t topple King’s, falling 10-0 at Shoreline.

The loss drops Coupeville to 0-1 in league play, 0-3 overall, but the schedule gets a tad easier after this.

The Wolves travel to Sultan Thursday for another conference clash, then head home for a four-game stretch which starts Saturday when 2A Kingston visits Whidbey for a non-league rumble.

While the high-powered Knights eventually rattled home their fair share of goals, Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson praised the play of his defense, which hung tough for long chunks of time.

“No upset tonight, but we did manage to keep them to two goals each half for the first 30 minutes of the half,” he said.

“With Mollie out, it was Katelin (McCormick) in the first half and Sam (Streitler) in the second half. Getting the rookie keepers some experience.”

One big step forward for the Coupeville program this season is having enough girls to field two complete teams.

It’s a milestone Nelson and his staff have been working towards.

“JV played our first JV game in quite some time. Maybe ever?,” Nelson said. “They also lost, but pulled together nicely after the first 5-10 minutes.”
