Net crew gains valuable experience

Some days are more about growth, and less about wins and losses.

Friday was one of those afternoons, as two high school tennis programs in very different places found a way to meet in the middle.

Granite Falls has more than twice as many students as Coupeville, and that carries over to its net program, where the Tigers have 24 girls wielding rackets.

The Wolves, who have brand new coaches and no home matches on the schedule as they wait for new courts to be built, have eight players.

And one of those netters was MIA Friday as the two teams dodged rain drops and played a different format than normal.

To give Granite Falls a chance for both its varsity and JV to see action, Coupeville’s players each squared off with two opponents, playing a set apiece instead of the normal best two-of-three.

While keeping the Tigers busy, the format also allowed a very-young Wolf squad to get plenty of court time.

“It was more of a coaching style match to help our newer players to tennis get more comfortable playing more of a variety of opponents,” said CHS assistant coach Starla Seal.

Along the way, the Wolves captured their first wins of the season, with 8th grader Tenley Stuurmans and sophomore Brynn Parker standing tall.

 

Friday’s results:

1st Singles — Tenley Stuurmans lost to Giorgia Felizzuni 6-2; beat Gola Paolikova 6-0

2nd Singles — Brynn Parker lost to Samantha Hagman 6-3; beat Audrey Vanwinkle 6-1

3rd Singles — Kaitlyn Leavell lost to Hailey Granger 6-2; lost to Samantha Hagman 6-4

1st Doubles — Stuurmans/Parker beat Luanne Thurston/Vanwinkle 6-1; beat Ari Dimitrova/Alisha Wright 6-3

2nd Doubles — Kauri Hamilton/Sofia Phay lost to Dimitrova/Ava Combs 6-0; lost to Brooke Mann/Marjorie Garcia 6-1

3rd Doubles — Delanie Lewis/Rafaela Silva De Campos Conceicao lost to Ashlee Meusling/Wright 6-0; lost to Mann/Garcia 6-2; lost to Hailey Grangley/Yolanda P. 6-3

Weather warms, action heats up

We’re in the thick of things now.

Spring sports are fully up and going, and the week ahead presents Coupeville High School fans with many viewing options.

Wolf baseball is at home twice, hosting Friday Harbor Tuesday, then welcoming Mount Vernon Christian to town Friday.

Meanwhile CHS softball has a split schedule.

The diamond women host Friday Harbor Tuesday, then travel to Blaine for the first of three-straight games on the road.

Track and field have a similar setup, hosting a Northwest 2B/1B League meet Wednesday, before venturing off to Stanwood Saturday for a freshman/sophomore invitational.

And Wolf girls’ tennis?

The netters are on the road all season, as they wait for new tennis courts to be finished.

Next week sees Coupeville’s hardcourt warriors visiting Granite Falls Friday.

As things really begin to heat up, a look at where early win/loss records sit through Mar. 17:

Plucky netters keep on keepin’ on

They’re making do with a limited roster.

The Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team only has eight players this season, and through the first two matches, the Wolves have yet to field a full lineup.

Friday afternoon brought the CHS road warriors to Friday Harbor, where they were without Skylar Parker and Kaitlyn Leavell, who played first and second singles in the season’s opening match.

Moving people around, and welcoming the debut of Tenley Stuurmans, Delanie Lewis, and Sofia Phay, Coupeville put up a spirited fight in a 4-0 loss.

The defeat drops the Wolves to 0-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 0-2 overall.

CHS, which is playing all 10 of its matches away from home this season as new tennis courts are built, returns to action Mar. 22 with a trek to the wilds of Granite Falls.

Netters swing into new season

The roster is thin, but the program is still alive.

That’s the big positive to take away from the opening match for the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team.

The Wolves only had five players ready to go Wednesday, but those netters put up a good scrap with an always-strong South Whidbey squad before falling 5-0.

As it waits for its new courts to be finished, Coupeville is spending this spring on the road, and will get back at it Friday with a trip to Friday Harbor.

Gird your loins, “spring” sports approach

Will it be sunny and mid-60’s or cloudy, rainy, (extremely) windy, and low-40’s?

If you have to ask, you’ve never experienced spring sports on Whidbey Island…

While I ponder who I can sweet-talk into buying Coupeville Sports one of those plastic viewing bubbles, the annual freezing of the nether regions approaches.

And no, it wouldn’t help if I wore pants and not shorts.

I’ve tried that before, and, other than slightly blocking gusts of wind shooting up the backside of my legs, there isn’t much difference.

It will be dastardly … I mean, delightful out there on the prairie.

As I look in the mirror and try to psych myself up to stare down Mother Nature at her orneriest, here’s a look at Coupeville High School varsity schedules for “spring” sports.

If there’s a ** next to a game, it indicates a Northwest 2B/1B League contest.

And no, you’re not reading things wrong.

Wolf tennis will NOT be playing at home this season, instead hitting the road for all 10 matches as they wait for new courts over by the CHS gym to be finished.

It’s the road life for the netters, with ferries and buses taking them to other areas where maybe the wind doesn’t howl quite so much.

But don’t hold your breath.
