Jacob Zettle (John Fisken photo)

The kid might have the biggest smile in Wolf Nation.

Even after taking a baseball to the face and getting all busted up last season, Jacob Zettle had the grin back on his face by the next time he returned to visit his teammates in the CHS dugout.

Mr. Zettle, who turns 16 today, plays football and baseball for Coupeville High School (previously he was a swimmer), but his impact goes far beyond those two fields.

He comes across as one of those guys who it’s always easy to root for, because he brings a mix of friendliness and joy to everything he does.

Whether he’s playing, or up in the press box running things during a game, he dives head-first into everything he does.

Which might be why he got whacked in the face by that pitch…

I kid. I kid. Next time, duck.

Jacob just seems like a quality guy, one who is deeply committed to his faith (through Coupeville’s Living Hope Foursquare Church), his family, his friends and his teammates.

He meets and greets everyone with a huge smile and an open spirit, and we just want to return the favor on his cake day.

Happy birthday, Jacob.

May your day shine as brightly as you do.

Heroes are made in October.

That used to be a Major League Baseball tradition, at least until they stretched the season out so far that the World Series started ending in November.

But it’s a mantra that stretches across the sports world, and one which resonates here in Wolf Nation.

As we kick off a new month, we do so by taking a moment to pay tribute to three bright, shining stars who all popped into the world on Oct. 1.

Dalton Martin, Skyler Lawrence and Grey Rische share a cake day, at least one sport (track) and the awesomeness gene.

Dalton is the oldest (by a slim year) and the CHS senior has been at the forefront of Wolf athletics since the day he arrived on campus.

Football, basketball, track, tennis, he’s starred in them all, while also embracing the chance to be a photo star, which endears me to him even more.

Now sure, I may have accidentally referred to him as Dalton Engle once or twice while writing late at night, but he’s a forgiving sort, a laid-back dude off the court and an intense warrior on it.

So, basically, an exact replica of his dad, Bob, CMS football coach extraordinaire, while also capturing a lot of mom Abbie’s innate sunniness.

The two youngsters, Skyler and Grey, are CHS juniors who have both brightened up the campus with their own brand of sunniness.

Grey is a smile machine and an extremely nice guy who can still crack some backs on the basketball court, track oval, or, currently, the tennis court, where he and older brother Jared Helmstadter have become a formidable doubles duo.

Not content to rule just one world, Mr. Rische is also a madman behind an instrument, a key part of the CHS band that often rules the bleachers at Wolf home games.

And then we come to Skyler, who is the very definition of a radiant, super-friendly young woman off the court who will beat the crud out of you once the whistle sounds.

A state meet veteran as a track thrower, she is a rebounding machine during basketball season.

In four years of watching her play (two in middle school, two in high school), I have NEVER seen Skyler lose a rebound that she had a hand on.

If her fingers are starting to curl around the basketball, there’s nothing for the other team to do but cry silent tears of regret.

What’s even more impressive, and has been since the first 7th grade game I saw her in, is Skyler’s motor.

Girl does not stop, and unlike most rebounders, gets out and hauls rear down the court, often leading the play she kick-started.

Not once, or twice. Every play she’s on the floor, Miss Lawrence is deeply, deeply committed to the cause, and it is a joy to behold.

All three of our birthday whiz kids share a lot of the same traits — a love of hard work, dedication to their team through wins or losses, and a serene spirit away from the arena.

They are, as individuals and a group, the best of what Coupeville has to offer the world, and, on their mutual birthday, let’s all take a moment to applaud them for all they do, and all they are.

Hunter Downes: American Bad-Ass (John Fiskenb photos)

Hunter Downes: American Bad-Ass (John Fisken photos)

Athletic success is pouring Down(es).

Angie Downes has gifted Coupeville schools with three talented sons — Hunter, Sage and the true superstar, Logan — and all three have made big impacts in the last couple of years.

Leading the pack is the oldest brother, the sling-it and wing-it QB (and today’s birthday boy), Hunter Downes.

Already the starting signal caller for the CHS football team before he hit the big 1-6, Hunter is one of those guys who tackles every sport he plays full-tilt, while never losing the grin that shows how much fun he’s having out there.

Relentless on the basketball court, where he beat opponents black and blue while winning the Mr. Hustle award as a freshman, Downes never backed down.

It’s a trait he has carried with him to the football field, where he has shot up the depth chart as he sailed through middle school ball and now on into his second year at CHS.

His day today is busy, I’m sure.

A birthday (the rock outside the school painted in his honor) and another practice as the Wolf gridiron squad prepares for Friday’s home opener, a tilt against Klahowya with huge playoff implications.

So, we won’t take up much more of his time.

But we do want to swing by long enough to say thank you to Hunter, for playing like a bat out of hell, and wish him a great birthday.

Keep kickin’ ass and takin’ names, Mr. Downes.

One birthday, three transcendent stars. CHS supernovas (clockwise, from left) Mattea Miller, Arisbeth Montiel, Julia Borges. (John Fisken photos)

We are in a golden age of female athletics in Coupeville.

Now sure, there are a lot of very talented male athletes as well. But, as a group, the women are kicking butt and taking names.

From last year’s league title winning girls’ basketball and tennis squads on down, the young women who wear the red and black at CHS are a talented, confident bunch.

And today is a magical day in which three bright shining stars all share a birthday, united by currently calling Cow Town home and by their general awesomeness.

Julia Borges is the newest addition, having arrived from Brazil to spend a year on The Rock as a foreign exchange student.

Already she is front and center with the Wolf cheer squad, her radiant smile beaming out as she joins in with her teammates during football games.

There is little rhyme or reason to where foreign exchange students are sent to, but, once again, we hit the jackpot by getting one of the best available.

Julia has been an outstanding addition to Wolf Nation, one who will always be a part of our little world, even after she heads home to the big city.

Joining her in celebrating her day of cake is Arisbeth Montiel, a two-way terror who joins Borges on the Wolf cheer squad while also being one of the leading goal scorers for the Coupeville girls’ soccer squad.

Whether she’s banging home scores on the soccer pitch, where she teams up with Kalia and Mia Littlejohn to form a potent trio putting the fear of God into opposing goalies, or working the pom poms, Arisbeth is another stellar addition to a group of Wolf female athletes taking the world by storm.

And capping our birthday trio is the legend herself, Mattea Miller, the Alaskan Assassin, who has sparkled in so many sports it’s hard to keep count.

Soccer, basketball, track. She can do it all and more, and remains, like best friend Valen Trujillo, the gold standard for student/athletes at CHS.

Mattea has never been one to shout and scream and thump herself on the chest. Instead, she is the athlete who quietly does whatever is necessary, the dirty work or the star work, and sparkles at it all.

If they come to us and say, go pick someone who your town can hold up proudly, as an athlete, but even more so, as a person, a young woman of class and determination, who always shows love for her family and friends, someone who is worthy of being hailed for her character and her sweet nature, someone who will fight on the field but embrace others afterwards, Miller accomplishes all of that.

She is one of the special ones.

As all three of these young women — top scholars, feisty athletes, special people — celebrate their cake day, we want to wish them the best.

Arisbeth, Julia, Mattea, you make this town better for your presence. May your day sparkle as much as you all do.

Emma Smith (John Fisken photos)

Smith

Smith points to a bright, bright future.

And one suitable for mom Konni to frame.

And one suitable for mom Konni to frame.

Well, that settles it.

Emma Smith has superstar written all over her, and when it was brought to my attention that former Wolf legend Joli Smith was her aunt, the deal was sealed.

Back in my early days, when I was a 21-year-old sports editor at the Whidbey News-Times, Joli was among the best athletes I covered, both skills-wise and personality-wise.

And it looks like her niece, who celebrates a birthday today and plays in a volleyball match tonight, will follow in her dad’s sister’s epic foot prints.

Emma was sensational at the middle school level in multiple sports, and hitting high school hasn’t slowed her roll at all.

The tall, hard-hitting, camera-friendly Wolf is the only freshman on the CHS varsity volleyball squad, and she’s not just there to keep a seat warm.

Emma has already played in two of her team’s three matches and put up strong stats.

She already has the length to be a top hitter, and as her confidence grows and her skills continue to be fine-tuned, she should team with other younger stars like Katrina McGranahan, Kyla Briscoe and Lauren Rose to make for a formidable force.

When spring rolls around, Smith is expected to put her track shoes back on, and her blazing quickness is well documented.

At CMS, she never finished lower than second in any relay she ran in, while also showing a dynamic side as a thrower. In one meet, Emma claimed first in both the shot put and discus.

Of course, as good an athlete as she appears to be, the other part which will make her a legend in these parts is her willingness to join the hallowed tradition of Wolves who LOVE to have their photo taken.

Emma may not be at the McKenzie Bailey Photo Bomb Queen gold standard level quite yet, but she’s young and she shows great promise, either by herself or with fellow frosh like Ashley Menges, Maddy Hilkey, Ashlie Shank and Lindsey Roberts.

As she enjoys her big day (a win over Orcas Island would be a nice present), we want to wish Joli’s niece all the best.

Happy birthday, Emma.
