Legendary.

And that’s just his hair.

As he hits the big 2-1 today, former Coupeville High School three-sport sensation (and current college gridiron warrior) Mitch Pelroy continues to cast a long shadow.

During his days as a Wolf, he was a beast, starring in football, basketball and track — where he won 28 races in three years and advanced to the 1A state meet in each of his seasons.

Now, he’s a hard-hittin’, fast-runnin’ two-way threat for Montana Western’s football squad.

On whatever stage he has been on, Mitch has embraced the spotlight, giddy grin splashed across his face as he looks over his shoulder at the foes who are trying, and failing, to catch him.

His legacy at CHS lives on in speedy lil’ sis Kirsten, who is bustin’ out PRS and takin’ names on the oval herself.

When they ask how you spell Pelroy, the answer is F-A-S-T.

But with the speed comes class, commitment and a rock-solid work ethic, family traits handed down from brother to sister.

You were one of the best to ever rep the red and black, Mitch. The Man, then, now and always.

Happy birthday, Mr. Pelroy. Never stop being awesome.

Sylvia Hurlburt: Queen of the Universe

Sylvia Hurlburt: Queen of the Universe

Sylvia Hurlburt is better than you and me, but she probably won’t admit it.

The Coupeville High School junior, who celebrates a birthday today, can pretty much do just about everything there is to do in this world, and do it all extremely well.

Dancer, tap and ballet and everything in between.

Speed demon track star.

Energizer Rabbit cheerleader with more pep than is humanly possible.

Intrepid photographer with an uncanny eye for detail.

The list goes on and on, and we’d be here all week (and maybe beyond) if we listed all her talents and accomplishments.

Not that she herself would take that time, because her greatest talent is this — Sylvia remains as easy-going, approachable, super-friendly and modest-about-her-own-awesomeness as any young woman you are likely to encounter.

If there’s an out of control ego raging away in there, she hides it really, really well.

So, it is up to us to frequently remind the world of how amazing Miss Hurlburt is on a daily basis.

To honor her for the way she dotes on her older brother, Larry, her parents, Kristin and Troy, and the trillions of friends she holds dear.

The way she brightens the world every time she steps out into it, a walkin’, talkin’ burst of happy radiance.

There is no artifice to Sylvia.

She is the real deal, a genuinely sweet, caring, smart as all get out superstar blazing a bright, burning trail across the universe on a daily basis.

She is going places, on her way to doing great things.

That we get to share a slice of her life, to witness her growth, is a treat.

May this day, and every day, be full of joy for her. Perfect karmic payback for a life lived well.

Some days just have more magic about them than others.

March 28 is one of those days, if you’re a CHS Wolf fan, with at least three current athletic stars having been born on this day.

Freshman Ben Olson, junior Mitchell Losey and senior Micky “Two Fists” LeVine all claim today as the day they shot into the world, one eye already set on claiming a spot among the elite.

Olson, a rampaging beast on the basketball court and baseball diamond, is one of those kids who grew up in the video stores I once worked at — Videoville and David’s DVD Den — and it’s still a bit odd to see him now being old enough to play high school sports.

But he’s a good guy, a solid older brother to my former video store “assistant manager,” the irrepressible Daniel Olson — now a 6th grade hoops whiz himself — and a talented athlete.

Losey is a vital link in a family that boasts a rich Wolf heritage that includes numerous former and future CHS athletes such as dad Scott and younger brother Shane.

Whether crackin’ helmets on the football field or flying around the track oval, Mitchell is a gutsy, hard-working dude who also, unlike a lot of male high school athletes, is willing to vamp a bit for the camera from time to time.

And then we have the real MVP, the two-fisted terror of the soccer pitch, Miss LeVine.

In reality, she is among the sweetest, most laid-back young women you will meet, a devoted big sis to Jae and Izzy and a Twitter prankster of the finest quality.

On the playing field, she is nimble, she is quick, she can be a deadly scorer, and, here is where the nickname comes in, deeply committed to protecting her teammates.

While playing select ball, a rival team tried to rough up a couple of her soccer sisters.

At which point the serene LeVine popped her knuckles and offered to drop kick all their rears, two at a time, and then take out the ref for aiding and abetting the harassment.

Do not mess with the petite one, for her heart is bigger than your whole body.

United by a birthday and their athletic contributions to their school, the trio are among the best and brightest Cow Town has to offer.

To all three of you, happy birthday.

And, if anyone is thinking about messing with your birthday cake, let ’em know, “Two Fists” don’t play that game.

There is irrepressible. And then there is Ally Roberts.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, a fun-lovin’ ball of fire who bounces merrily from cheer to volleyball to horse competitions, has big footsteps to follow.

Almost every single member of her extended family was a standout athlete or an influential coach during their time as a Wolf.

I mean, Ally has a family reunion every time she goes in the CHS gym and looks up at the wall where the Athlete of the Year photos are hung up.

But you know what? The kid is blazin’ her own brightly-lit trail.

And she’s doing it her way, with a kind heart, a mega-watt smile and just a hint of feisty pluck.

Miss Roberts works hard and earns the ribbons and awards people hand her on a regular basis, but shows no signs of letting her growing stardom go to her head.

Today, as she hits the big 1-6, her future is as bright as anyone in the town she calls home.

Happy birthday, Ally!

May your day shine as brightly as you do every time I see you.

Hunter Hammer: Force of Nature

Hunter Hammer: Force of Nature

Yesterday, Coupeville Sports officially passed half a million page views all-time.

A fair amount of those views came to us courtesy of one large-livin’ legend, Hunter Hammer.

A six-foot-seven basketball and track juggernaut who devoted a fair amount of time to being a goofball, Mr. Hammer, who turns 22 today, is gold, Jerry, gold.

I’m sure he’s got much going on today, so I won’t burden him down with hundreds of rambling words about what a great guy he is, on and off the court.

Instead, we’ll just bow to the one true Page Hit King, and wish him a birthday that matches up to his stature.

Never change, Huntah!

Sincerely, all your fans.
