“Screw this! I’m playing “Crazy Train” the whole night!!!”

Friday Night Lights are about more than just football.

While the primary action is down on the gridiron, the support crew is a large and diverse one.

From ticket sellers to hot dog hawkers in the snack shack, home games at Mickey Clark Field use the talents of a ton of folks.

Today, we’re turning the spotlight to the CHS band, which bounces from the national anthem to “On Wisconsin” to jazzy covers of Chicago songs under the direction of Jamar Jenkins.

His ace crew (some of whom do double duty as football players or cheerleaders):

Connie Armitage-Buckley
Mollie Bailey
Jakobi Baumann
Jaschon Baumann
Laurence Boado
Heidi Clinkscales
Mackenzie Davis
Kaley Grigsby
Jesse Hester
Jake Hoagland
Samuel Lockwood
Nikolai Lyngra
Andrew Martin
Mckenzie Meyer
Claire Mietus
Cassidy Moody
Ben Olson
Daniel Olson
Jacobi Pacquette-Pilgrim
Koby Schreiber
Harris Sinclair
Sean Toomey-Stout
Raven Vick
Allison Wenzel

And, a 10-hour loop of the opening guitar riff from “Crazy Train,” cause, why not?

Strike up the band and let’s celebrate … the band.

Coupeville High School’s musical maestros are there at every home basketball game (and sometimes pop up down in Oak Harbor as well), putting in time and effort to keep things swinging.

Thanks to the ever-clicking camera of John Fisken, let’s take a moment to swing the spotlight on the guys and gals who keep the tunes cranked up to 11 all night.

Allison

Hair in a braid? A ferocious defensive terror on the basketball court. Hair down? Ready to bring in the funk ‘n the soul. Allison Wenzel, double threat.

“Yeah, I heard your “magical note,” McClarin. Get ready to be blown out of your seat as I reclaim the title of World’s Greatest Flutist!!”

The band played on, even in tight quarters.

With Tuesday night’s CHS girls’ basketball games bounced across the hallway into the much-smaller middle school gym (technical problems), everyone ended up on top of each other.

That didn’t stop the Wolf house band from letting loose with some tunes, however.

And, it also gave bass player extraordinaire Savanna Dohner a chance to play for her classmates and fans one final time.

The prodigiously talented sophomore is transferring to Oak Harbor High School after a family move, but she will always be the Queen of Cow Town (cow bell and all).

Rock on, Savvy. You will always have two homes.

Savanna Dohner, AKA The Bass Queen of Cow Town.

You can’t have a party without the band.

With The Bucket coming back to Coupeville Friday night, the joint was jumpin’, and, after a bit of a slow start, the CHS band kicked into high gear.

While you can argue they need to learn a little AC/DC, they got the job done, led by the uber-talented Savanna Dohner on bass and former Wolf Danny Savalza sitting in on drums.

This year’s band, at least if the opening night program was 100% correct (always debatable):

“This is my chance. I’m doing my Zeppelin solo now!”

And the band played on.

And the band played on.

You can knock Jamar Jenkins down, but you can’t knock him out.

The Coupeville High School band director got plowed by a Sultan player chasing a loose ball Tuesday night, but, after shaking it off, he was back up and leading his band through its paces shortly after.

Half-man, half-music Terminator. The legend rocks on.
