Hope Lodell controls the flow.

First impressions were good.

Having watched her squad play Saturday in a jamboree in Oak Harbor, CHS volleyball coach Breanne Smedley was very happy.

“I was pleased with how the team competed today!,” she said. “The jamboree is a time for us to try out different rotations and combinations of players on the court, and they all did a great job of working through that in order to find their flow.”

With the season-opener Tuesday at home against Island rival South Whidbey (JV 5:00, varsity 7), the Wolves spent Saturday working out the kinks and finding a nice rhythm.

Katrina (McGranahan) and McKenzie (Bailey) were our strong go-to hitters through the middle,” Smedley said. “While Valen (Trujillo), Hope (Lodell) and Tiffany (Briscoe)’s passing allowed our offense to get up and running.

“Also, Sydney (Autio) provided us with another offensive weapon as we transitioned to a 6-2 offense, allowing her to hit in the front row.”

More importantly perhaps, the first photo has also landed.

Making their official 2015 debut Saturday, the Coupeville High School volleyball squad squared off with a pack of rivals at a jamboree in Oak Harbor.

For more on the actual on-court action, you’ll have to wait a hot moment or two until the next story pops up here on the blog tonight.

This one? It’s all about the photo ops.

It’s official. Fall sports have begun.

The Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad got things kicked off Thursday, taking part in a jamboree at Oak Harbor.

While the scores didn’t count, it did give the Wolves some real-world prep for their season opener (Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Mount Vernon Christian) and, maybe most importantly, gave the booters a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera again.

Seeing as how their photo game is already at mid-season peak, the season looks like a bright one.

Oh, and those scores?

The Wolves battled to a strong 1-1 tie with South Whidbey, a team they will play for real in a week, then were narrowly nipped 1-0 by host 3A Oak Harbor.

Sophomore Sage Renninger tallied Coupeville’s goal, hitting on a shot described by Wolf coach Troy Cowan as “a bullet from point blank range that left thread marks on the ball, it was hit so hard.”

Lauren Grove and Mckenzie Meyer shared time in goal, and the duo, who are replacing the graduated Julia Myers, both sparkled.

Cowan tabbed Meyer as the night’s MVP, but he was pleased with the play from his entire roster.

“The girls showed some real spunk and fire!!!,” he said. “Both our opponents were tough and played hard and that brought the best out of the Lady Wolves which I was pleasantly happy about.

“I saw some scrappy Wolves tonight that didn’t back down and gave it as good as they got it!!! It’s going to be a good season!”

New year, almost new team, and so far, so good.

Getting a jump on the high school squad by a day, the Coupeville Middle School football team swept both of its games Thursday at a jamboree in Sultan.

Seventh grader Sean Toomey-Stout, making his debut as a gridiron warrior, scored two touchdowns, while quarterback Shane Losey was a two-way terror, hauling in an interception on defense.

Along for the ride was proud mama Melissa Losey, who snapped the pics above.

Matt Shank prepares to defend his turf.

Matt Shank will help anchor the Wolf lines.

A little tuneup.

With the start of fall practice just two days away, and opening night against South Whidbey set for Sept. 5, the Coupeville High School football squad wants to get as much time on the field as possible.

To help achieve that, the Wolves have picked up a second jamboree, to be played in La Conner 1 PM Friday, Aug. 29.

Burlington-Edison will join CHS and the host Braves.

The event will be open to players who have eight full practices in, and individual players will be limited to 40 total snaps.

Like all jamborees, the event will be run without clock or score-keeping and is intended to give the three schools a chance to work out kinks prior to the start of the regular season.

Fans and parents are welcome.
