They wanted it more.

When it came down to it, the young women on the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team had to win, needed to win, were willing to hit the floor harder, sacrifice their bodies more and fight a second or two longer than Meridian was Thursday night.

And all the effort, all the bumps, bruises and floor burns, the elbows to the ribs, the adrenaline rushes?

In the end, they paid off in a 42-41 win, the first playoff victory for the Wolves in at least five seasons.

Coupeville heads to Blaine Friday for a loser-out, winner-to-tri-districts game on Valentine’s Day.

Win or lose, the nine girls who played Thursday, and the two who were enthusiastic cheerleaders while being forced to sit on the bench in street clothes due to injury and illness, will always have that one bright, shining night to remember.

They came, they saw, they kicked some fanny. They’ll never forget that.

The man, the myth, the legend.

“Psst … hey ref. See my sign? They like me more than you. Yeah, put that in your fancy whistle and blow on it…”

They were loud and they were proud.

With many of them waving homemade signs, Coupeville High School students rocked the gym Thursday night, willing on their girl’s basketball team to its first playoff win in at least five seasons.

They were creative. They were inspired. And, most of all, they brought both the noise and the funk back to the CHS gym.

Wolf fans, hear them roar.

It’s playoff time, baby.

The Coupeville High School girls’ hoops squad kicks off the double-elimination district tournament tonight 7 PM in Mount Baker.

A win against the Mountaineers (10-10) and the Wolves (9-11) would likely be back on the road Thursday to face top seed Lynden Christian in the semifinals.

A loss and Coupeville, barring a colossal upset defeat for the Lyncs, would host Meridian, — a team they beat 46-34 earlier this season — also on Thursday.

Depending on the route they take, the Wolves could play Friday (and possibly host) and/or Saturday (on a neutral court at Mountlake Terrace High School).

Four of the eight teams at districts will advance to tri-districts, which run Feb. 18-22.

Only one of Coupeville High School’s four basketball teams is still playing.

As the Wolf varsity girls (9-11) prepare to kick off the double-elimination district playoffs tonight at Mount Baker (10-10), the girls’ JV, boys’ varsity and boys’ JV teams have wrapped their seasons.

But, even as the players from those squads disperse, with many moving on to planning for the start of spring sports March 3, there’s a ton of photographs to still sift through.

So, start sifting and let your mind ramble back through the seasons just wrapped.
