Let them play and they will win.

The rainiest spring in recent memory has played havoc with the schedule for the Coupeville High School girls tennis team.

Maybe that’s changing, though, as Monday provided clear skies and not a single drop of liquid sunshine.

Taking advantage, the Wolf netters played a complete match for the first time in almost two weeks, whacking visiting Friday Harbor 7-0.

The victory, coming against a longtime rival, lifts Coupeville to 3-3 on the season.

The Wolves, who are hoping against hope to play four matches this week, host Chimacum Tuesday, then hit the road Wednesday (South Whidbey) and Thursday (Klahowya).

Their trip to Silverdale could be a two-for-one experience, as the plan is to finish a match that was suspended (by rain, what else) with the Wolves ahead 2-0, then play a regularly scheduled match.

Facing off with Friday Harbor, Coupeville ran away with the match, winning six of seven varsity tilts in straight sets.

With their win, first doubles duo Sage Renninger and Payton Aparicio improved to a flawless 5-0 as a unit this season.

Renninger is actually 6-0, having won a match with lil’ sis Avalon when her normal partner was on vacation.

Put in the work now, win later.

That’s the goal for Coupeville High School’s fall sports programs, which all put in practice time Monday.

Wandering camera clicker John Fisken was able to nab three of the five Wolf teams in action, netting volleyball, football and cheer.

Boys tennis and girls soccer were also scheduled to make their practice debuts Monday, and we’ll try and nab some photos of those squads in the coming days.

Until then, a picturesque look at some of the Wolves who will light up the scoreboard this season.

Mckenzie Meyer

Junior-to-be Mckenzie Meyer holds center stage last winter.

The cheer is strong in these ones.

The first Coupeville High School football game sits 77 days away (Sept. 2 at home against South Whidbey), but a strong pack of Wolf cheerleaders are already at work.

CHS coach Cheridan Eck has 25 girls, including 13 returnees, and a manager, who are showing up for mid-June practices.

Summer cheer camp looms in the future, along with countless stunts, cheers and group displays of Ohana.

While the roster may change between now and the start of school, here’s where it stands through June 17 (stars indicate returning cheerleader):

Brittany Starr loves her job and it shows.

When she became a Coupeville High School cheerleader this past school year, returning to the sport she was a part of back in her younger days, she immediately seized the moment.

Every chance she had, Starr was right there with teammates and friends like Amanda Nietzel, front and center, capable (and very willing) of being loud and proud in support of her school and classmates.

A friendly, outgoing young woman who celebrates a birthday today, she embraced everything about her new team.

“What isn’t there to enjoy about cheer! The energy of all the girls is just great to be around!,” Starr told me in an interview last year. “When we are with each other, as soon as we walk in the door for practice, everything bad gets put behind us.

“It makes it so easy for all of us all to be our selves around each other.”

Whether she’s putting in work with her teammates or involved in her non-sports life, Starr is one of the best and brightest Wolf Nation has to offer the world.

As she hits her cake day, we want to take a moment to wish the CHS senior-to-be big happy birthday wishes.

May your day shine as brightly as you do, Miss Starr.

They are loud ‘n proud, two pint-sized wonders who pack a big cheer punch.

Coupeville High School cheerleaders Maddy Neitzel and Julie Bucio are separated by a couple of years in age (the former is a senior, the latter a freshman), but they’re united by their birthday and their bright, shining spirits.

You couldn’t ask for two friendlier, more outgoing, smart and kind young women to rep our town.

As key members of the Wolf cheer squad, the duo were front and center at a ton of games this school year, and they both radiated school spirit and a love for inspiring their classmates and local fans.

Working as hard as anyone at CHS, the duo, and their cheer teammates, have consistently proven they should be viewed in the same light as other Wolf athletes, since that’s what they are — athletes.

Away from the arena, both display big skills in the classroom (science calls to Bucio while Neitzel is all about art), and, when I interviewed them for articles, a love of family was what drove both of these strong young women.

As the duo celebrate their joint cake day, we, the fans who see a slice of their lives play out in front of us, want to send both of them big happy birthday wishes.

Maddy, Julie, you are both amazing and I have no doubt you will continue to scale new heights as you move forward with your lives.

Happy birthday, ladies!
