The home cooking paid off.

Back playing on their own pitch after a three-game road trip, the Coupeville High School girls soccer team pulled off a late rally Saturday, earning a tie which felt more like a win.

Despite missing four key starters — Avalon Renninger, Genna Wright, Mollie Bailey, and Mallory Kortuem — the 1A Wolves played 2A Kingston to a 1-1 draw.

The tie, coming in a non-conference game, lifts Coupeville to 0-4-1 on the season.

The two teams battled through a scoreless first half, before the Buccaneers broke the stalemate early in the second half on a goal which barely slipped past the Wolf defense.

Coupeville, coming off a 1-0 loss in its last game, didn’t buckle, however, charging back to get the answering goal with a hair over 15 minutes left in the match.

Eryn Wood set the play up, dropping a pass for Sophia Martin, who banged home her team-leading second goal of the season.

It was sweet payback for Martin, who had an earlier goal waved off when Coupeville was called for being off-sides.

With the game knotted at one, the Wolf defense clamped down and preserved the tie, kicking off a four-game home-stand for Coupeville.

The Wolves welcome Cedar Park Christian to town Tuesday, Sept. 24 for a North Sound Conference game, then return to action Sept. 28 against non-league foe Mount Vernon Christian.

JV gets its turn in the spotlight:

Coupeville’s second squad made its home debut, playing a fast-paced 7-on-7 version of soccer, and the young team hung tough in a 4-0 loss.

The Wolf JV sits at 0-2 on the season.

Most important was simply getting a chance to get on the pitch and do work.

“Nice to have JV out there getting playing time in,” said Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson. “Every player got a full game worth of playing time today.”

The trial by fire continues.

Coupeville High School, among the very smallest of all 1A schools in Washington state, is opening its season with a run of non-conference tilts against large 2A schools.

Tuesday afternoon it was undefeated Kingston, which boasts a student body two-and-a-half times that of CHS, visiting Whidbey.

Somewhat predictably, the Buccaneers left town with a 6-1 non-conference win, running their record to 4-0 and dropping the Wolves to 0-4.

But all of this has been prep for Coupeville facing off with its own 1A Olympic League foes, and the pursuit of a fourth-straight league title.

The Wolves, who are 15-0 in the three-year history of the league, get their first taste of conference play Thursday, when they welcome Klahowya (0-3) to town.

When the Eagles show up, Coupeville’s doubles duos will be the featured attraction.

Sophomores Tia Wurzrainer and Avalon Renninger romped to a straight-sets win at #2 doubles Tuesday, while seniors Sage Renninger and Payton Aparicio pushed their Kingston rivals to a third-set tiebreaker in a very close match.

After opening the season with a pair of singles wins, Mason Grove teamed with Nick Etzell Wednesday to roll to a doubles victory. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

William Nelson is not prone to excessive on-court giddiness.

The Coupeville High School senior netter is a serene, low-key athlete, and he and his doubles partner, Joey Lippo, are the very epitome of the phrase “cooler than the other side of the pillow.”

So, when Nelson jumped a good six inches in the air after Wednesday’s match, it was equal to another player ripping all their clothes off, setting their hair on fire, then sprinting laps around the school screaming “We are the Champions” at the top of his lungs while being chased by a fire extinguisher-wielding Mr. Black.

In other words, you knew big stuff had gone down.

What inspired this show of emotion?

Nelson and Lippo had rallied twice, once from a set down, then from a 3-0 hole in the third set, to stun a very good Kingston doubles duo and stay unbeaten on the season.

Even better, their 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory proved to be the difference as lil’ 1A Coupeville (227 students) knocked off their visitors, sending the 2A Buccaneers (605 students) home on the losing end of a 4-3 contest.

The non-conference win, coming on the heels of a pair of razor-thin 4-3 losses to other 2A schools, lifts the Wolves to 1-2 and gives them momentum heading into an important match.

That comes Friday, when Coupeville heads to Silverdale to face Klahowya in the first league match of the season.

As two-time defending 1A Olympic League champs, CHS would like nothing more than to get off to a strong start with a win over their toughest league rival.

If the Wolf doubles teams play Friday like they did Wednesday, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Along with Lippo and Nelson, CHS also got wins from the duos of Nick Etzell/Mason Grove (who threw down a double bagel, then tried to explain to their parents how that phrase translates to a 6-0, 6-0 win) and Zach Ginnings/Drake Borden.

Grove and Ginnings are also 3-0 on the young season, giving Coupeville four unbeaten players.

Rounding out the Wolf winners Wednesday was #3 singles ace Nile Lockwood, who crawled off his death bed, ignored possible pneumonia and rolled to a straight-sets victory.

While the Coupeville High School boys’ tennis squad slid to its fourth consecutive loss Wednesday, falling 5-2 at Kingston, the loss to a large 2A school wasn’t without its bright moments.

Three things in particular stood out.

Freshman Mason Grove made his varsity debut, having shot up the singles ladder at the last practice, and fought hard through a close match.

Going him one better were the #3 doubles duo of Jimmy Myers and Grey Rische, who rebounded from a set down to win a thriller and remain the only unbeaten players on the Wolf roster.

While Coupeville is 0-4, having faced three 2A schools and a 1A private school power, the senior duo is a spotless 4-0 in their first go-round as partners.

Topping the afternoon was a huge breakthrough for #1 singles player Nick Etzell, who used his wiles to outfox his foe and grab his first win at the top of the roster.

Nick was a man possessed today,” said CHS tennis coach Ken Stange. “He played a more experienced opponent, but he employed a smart strategy.

“He took all the pace off the ball, hitting shots that were high and deep. His opponent needed balls that were hit hard,” he added. “I don’t know if I’ve ever had a player stay so true to a plan of attack.”

The win, and the way it was achieved, reinforced why Stange thinks so highly of his junior ace.

“To call him coachable would be a major understatement,” he said. “I’m very proud of his effort today, and every day.”

Lathom Kelley, practicing the look he gives foes before he rips out their very soul.

Lathom Kelley is The Natural.

In six years of high school and middle school track, the Coupeville High School senior had never competed in the triple jump before Thursday.

So, how did he do in his debut on the big stage at Kingston High School?

Crushed it.

Soaring six and a half inches further than any of his foes in a 14-man field, Kelley made off with the win, one of two for him on the day.

Toss in his other victory (long jump), plus wins for Dalton Martin (discus), Makana Stone (800) and the girls 4 x 200 relay team, and Coupeville more than held its own on a day in which it faced off with three 2A schools and a pair of 1B teams.

The Wolf boys, who set 15 PRs on the day, finished second in the team standings, while the girls, who notched 14 PRs of their own, claimed third.

2A Olympic ran away with both titles, while Kingston, Port Angeles, Clallam Bay and Neah Bay also participated in the meet.
