Road, sweet, road.

The Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad has played some of its best games away from its own gym this season, and Wednesday night was a prime example.

Leading from start to finish, Kassie O’Neil’s band of road warriors held off host La Conner, claiming a solid 28-22 win.

The victory lifts Coupeville’s young guns to 2-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-5 overall, heading into another road tussle Friday against Mount Vernon Christian.

Wednesday’s rumble in La Conner was close for a quarter, with the Wolves clinging to a 4-3 lead after a defensive-minded opening eight minutes.

But then O’Neil turned Madison McMillan loose, and CHS made its move.

The Wolf sophomore knocked down seven of her game-high nine points in the second frame, with Teagan Calkins and Bryley Gilbert chipping in as Coupeville busted things open with a 10-5 run.

Teagan Calkins gets scrappy.

Up 14-8 heading into the second half, the Wolves pushed their advantage out to 20-11 by the end of the third, then held on as La Conner rallied late.

McMillan’s nine-point effort led a well-balanced offensive attack, with Desi Ramirez-Vasquez going off for all eight of her points after halftime.

Kierra Thayer banked in four points in support of the duo, with Carlota Marcos-Cabrillo (2), Jada Heaton (2), Calkins (2), and Gilbert (1) rounding out the scorers.

Reese Wilkinson, Brynn Parker, Kayla Arnold, Kassidy Upchurch, Skylar Parker, and Liza Zustiak also saw floor time for the Wolves, who won for the third time on the road this season.

It’s a nice parting gift.

Suzanne Marble, who retired after winning seven state titles in a 30-year run as La Conner High School volleyball coach, is being inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame.

With everyone playing catch-up thanks to the pandemic, the WIAA is honoring both the Class of 2021 and Class of 2022 at the same time, with the event set for May 3 in Renton.

The 11 inductees from the two classes include administrators, contributors, athletes, coaches, and officials.

Marble fills the coach slot for the class of 2022, while Phil Lonborg, who coached five sports in his career while working at Timberline and River Ridge, is the ’21 selection in that category.

The WIAA Hall of Fame includes such heavy hitters as professional athletes John Stockton, Ron Santo, and Kate Starbird, as well as the state’s winningest football coach, Sid Otton — best known for being my 9th grade health teacher at Tumwater High School.

Marble, a graduate of Mead High School in Spokane, led La Conner to 574 wins, bringing home state titles in 2002, 2006, 2007, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022.

The Braves are four-time defending 2B champs, as there was no state tourney in 2020 because of pandemic restrictions.

A busy week awaits.

Heading towards the holidays, Coupeville High School basketball teams are set to play three times in a four-day period.

The Wolves host Crescent Wednesday in a varsity-only rumble, then split locales a day later.

While Coupeville’s two boys’ squads are home Thursday against Sedro-Woolley, the CHS girls hit the road that night to face the same opponent.

The Wolves then wrap the week with an epic trek to Forks Saturday.

And they’re off.

High school basketball teams are back at it, and one week in, 13 of 14 Northwest 2B/1B League schools have played at least one game.

It’s all been non-conference action so far, with NWL girls’ squads piling up seven wins to just three from boys’ teams.

The week ahead brings three varsity contests for Coupeville hoops stars.

The Wolf boys hit the road Tuesday, travelling to Tacoma to battle Concordia Christian Academy.

After that, there’s a Saturday home doubleheader, with Coupeville hosting Sultan for both girls and boys contests.

While the season is just underway, it’s never too early to post win/loss records, so here you go.

The final chapter was a best seller.

La Conner High School volleyball coach Suzanne Marble capped a 30-year run Friday, guiding her squad to a fourth consecutive 2B state title.

The Braves knocked off Okanogan, Lind-Ritzville-Sprague, Manson, and Colfax to claim the crown, the seventh overall in program history.

Marble and La Conner claimed titles in 2002, 2006, 2007, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022.

There was no state tournament in 2020 because of the ongoing pandemic.

The Braves finished 18-3 in Marble’s final season and dropped just one set at state.

Seeded #3 in the 12-team 2B field, La Conner upset #2 Manson in the semifinals, revenge for a late-season non-conference loss during an Eastern Washington road trip.

Top-seeded Kalama, which was 22-0 entering play Friday, also suffered an upset, falling to #4 Colfax in the semifinals.

It turned out to be back-to-back losses for the Chinooks, as Manson spiked them in the 3rd/4th place match.

Adna (5th), Lind-Ritzville-Sprague (6th), Okanogan (7th), and Tri-Cities Prep (8th) also brought home trophies.

While the 2B championships were a 12-team affair, with La Conner beating Coupeville in the bi-district finals to claim the one ticket to state available for Districts 1 and 2, it was a much-bigger draw in 1B.

Three Northwest 2B/1B League rivals which Coupeville blitzed in the regular season made the 20-team field in that tourney.

Mount Vernon Christian was seeded #6, Orcas Island #16, and Darrington #19, but it was the lowest of those three seeds which surprised everyone by claiming a trophy.

Darrington won three of five matches to finish 8th, while the two other NWL schools went 1-2.

Neah Bay, another school Coupeville scorched during the regular season, beat the Loggers in the 7th/8th place game, while top seeded Oakesdale won the 1B title.
