CMS spikers fill gym with laughs, aces

The gym was jumpin’.

Playing a tough, large-school foe in visiting Lakewood, the Coupeville Middle School volleyball squads put up strong effort Wednesday, but couldn’t come away with any wins.

The home CMS triple-header, held at the same time and a hallway away from a high school triple-header, marks the midway point in the 10-match middle school season.

How Wednesday played out:

 

Team 1:

Coupeville’s top squad fell 25-12, 25-17, 15-5, and sits at 0-5 heading into a match Saturday at South Whidbey.

Katie Marti and Savina Wells kick-started the Wolf attack, with their team winning seven points each on their serve, while Mia Farris (6) and Olivia Schaffeld (5) were also strong.

Rounding out the service winners were Lyla Stuurmans (3), Chloe Marzocca (3), Taylor Brotemarkle (2), and Grey Peabody (1).

 

Team 2:

The Coupeville team with the best won/loss record made it close, before falling 25-15, 25-13, 17-15.

With the defeat, the middle squad falls to 3-2 on the season.

The Wolves won eight points off of Madison McMillan’s serves, while picking up six apiece when Issabel Johnson, Laila Wenzel, and Kaitlyn Leavell put the ball in play.

Also scoring were Brionna Blouin (4), Jada Heaton (4), Aby Wood (4), Allison Nastali (3), Skylar Parker (1), and Ava Mitten (1).

 

Team 3:

Again, the third set was the hardest-fought, with CMS coming up on the wrong side of a 25-16, 25-10, 15-11 afternoon.

With the loss, Coupeville’s third squad sits at 1-4.

Bailey Thule had the biggest day for any Wolf server on any team, picking up 10 points for her team, while Hayley Thomas (8), Gabriella Becktell (5), and Jackie Contreras (4) were hot on her heels.

Rounding out the scoring were Jones Walther (3), Oktober Frost (2), Kassidy Upchurch (2), Bryley Gilbert (1), and Maryah Love (1).

Step by step, young booters improve

First improvement, then wins.

As the Coupeville Middle School boys soccer team works its way through the program’s first-ever season, coach Reese Cernick has preached growth.

And there have been results, as the Wolves continue to fine-tune their collective games.

While CMS fell 5-2 to visiting Lakewood Monday, the positive changes are being noticed by all.

“The opposing coach congratulated us after the game on our team’s improvement since we last played,” Cernick said. “I would like to say that we are playing against three other teams with great coaches.

“Each coach has been great to speak with and had has nothing but good things to say about our team.”

Coupeville hits the halfway point of the season at 1-4, with its next two games at home.

Granite Falls arrives on Whidbey Wednesday, with Northshore Christian Academy set to show up Oct. 14.

The Wolves netted their scores Monday on vastly different plays.

On the first, Logan Downes beat the Lakewood goalie on a one-on-one, ramming home his team-leading third goal of the season.

Coupeville also scored off of a bit of teamwork, as Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim crashed a shot at the net, allowing teammate Andrew Williams to step up and head the incoming ball past the net-minder.

It was the second score of the season for Williams.

Cernick stepped off the rain-slickened pitch with a spring to his step.

“Our passing game continues to improve as well as our desire to get to the ball first,” he said. “I am proud of each and every player on the team.

“They each played a great game today.”

Write him Down(es) in the record book

Logan Downes made some history.

The Coupeville Middle School 8th grader became the first boys soccer player in school history to score a goal, finding the back of the net Wednesday afternoon at Lakewood.

He actually picked up a second score as well, though it would be credited as an “own goal,” as Downes banged a corner kick right at a Lakewood player who accidentally headed the incoming ball past his own goalkeeper.

While the Wolves fell 8-2 in the first road game in program history, dropping their record to 0-2 in their inaugural season, there were plenty of positives.

“I feel we played a better game this time than our first game,” said Coupeville coach Reese Cernick. “Positioning was better.

“We’re starting to come together as a team, but have a little ways to go.”

The Wolves travel to Granite Falls Sept. 30 and Northshore Christian Academy Oct. 2, before returning home Oct. 7 to kick off a three-game home-stand with a rematch against Lakewood.

The soccer program, which was added this year after CMS football was eliminated, has a 10-game season.

Our bats have no off switch

If it wasn’t for the mercy rule, the game might still be going.

Scoring the maximum five runs in each inning Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV softball team paddled 2A Lakewood 20-6 in a game played on a neutral field in Oak Harbor.

Nine of 11 Wolves scored at least once, while the young guns racked up 10 hits and 14 walks in their season opener.

The run-fest started in the bottom of the first inning, where Coupeville didn’t record a single out while going through the first seven slots in the lineup.

And it didn’t let up from there, as the Wolves picked apart Lakewood’s pitching, while their own hurler, Mollie Bailey, whiffed 10 Cougars.

The opening salvo for Coupeville started with back-to-back walks to Audrianna Shaw and Mckenna Somes, followed by three straight base-knocks.

Izzy Wells teed off on a pitch, launching a double, while Bailey and Kylie Van Velkinburgh plunked singles into open gaps in the defense.

Sisters Ivy and Lily Leedy closed the first-inning assault by demonstrating eagle eyes, both eking out free passes on walks.

The rat-a-tat offense never let up for Coupeville, with Wells smashing a triple, Bailey and Van Velkinburgh launching doubles, and Shaw, Bailey, and both Leedy sisters tacking on singles.

Shaw, Somes, and Heidi Meyers each picked up three base on balls, Chloe Wheeler and Amanda Thomas walked twice apiece, and Morgan Stevens helped anchor the rock-solid Wolf defense while stationed in left field.

Coupeville, after waxing a big-school opponent, gets a different kind of challenge in its next game.

The Wolf JV hosts Concrete Wednesday, Mar. 20 and the 4 PM game is against the 2B school’s varsity squad.

Scrappy Wolves split with big-school foes

One team is chasing experience, the other perfection.

The two Coupeville Middle School girls basketball squads to see action Tuesday at home against Lakewood found different results, but both continue to build towards a bright future.

How the action played out:

 

8th grade varsity rolls towards nirvana:

Two games away from perfection.

Dodging the rampant illness running through Coupeville, at least for the moment, the Wolves crushed Lakewood 38-21 to improve to a flawless 7-0 on the season.

CMS coach Alex Evans and his band of fiery attack dogs have two games remaining, both against teams they have already beaten.

First up is the home finale Thursday, with Sultan on the menu, than a road trip Mar. 19 to Granite Falls.

Facing off with Lakewood, a much-larger school which feeds players to a 2A high school, the Wolves methodically bushwhacked their foes.

A 10-7 lead after one blossomed into a 19-10 margin at the half, then a 30-16 bulge headed into the fourth quarter.

Alita Blouin, the quick-silver killer known as “The Assassin,” led the way, hitting for a game-high 11 points on a variety of shots, including a big three-ball in the third frame.

She was backed up by Nezi Keiper, who rattled the rim for nine points, and the inside-outside combo of Carolyn Lhamon and Maddie Georges, who hit for six apiece.

Hayley Fielder (4) and Gwen Gustafson (2) rounded out the well-balanced attack, while Jill Prince, Jordyn Rogers, and Ryanne Knoblich all chipped in with defense, hustle and all-around scrappiness.

 

7th grade varsity goes down swinging:

Coupeville was missing leading scorer Brionna Blouin and defensive dynamo Allison Nastali, thanks to illness, and the Wolves fell 37-13 to their big-school rivals.

The loss drops the Wolves to 2-6 on the season.

Lakewood put the hammer down hard in the early going, sprinting out to a 14-2 lead after one quarter, then steadily increased the lead as the game went.

Coupeville ended the afternoon on a positive note, however, taking the fourth-quarter battle 4-2, with Erica McGrath and Desi Ramirez singing the nets for a bucket apiece.

Ramirez, who entered the game with nine points on the season, went off for a team-high six, while Lauren Marrs hit for three.

Joining that duo, and McGrath, plucky Ava Mitten, niece of former CHS hoops hotshot Jason McFadyen, drained the first basket of her middle school hardwood career.

Skylar Parker, Reese Wilkinson, Kayla Arnold, Kaitlyn Leavell, and Jackie Contreras also saw floor time for Megan Smith’s ever-improving team.

 

8th grade JV sits out:

Lakewood is getting hit as bad as Coupeville is when it comes to cold and flu season, and the visitors weren’t able to field a JV team this time around.
