Troy Cowan was on cloud nine.

Even though his Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad took a 1-0 non-conference loss at La Conner Tuesday, that was the least of his concerns.

First and foremost was the health of his star defender and team captain, Jenn Spark, who momentarily gave him an epic wave of angina.

Spark, who suffered a devastating ACL/MCL injury as a junior, was running for a ball late in the game Tuesday.

After missing the elusive orb, she went down, momentarily recreating memories of last season for her coach.

“With all seriousness I have to say I was about to have a heart attack!!!,” Cowan said. “She took a (Tim) Tebow pose for like seven seconds that seemed like 30 minutes!!

“My heart went to my shoes and memories of my ER visit returned and started haunting my soul!!!,” he added. “She slowly got up and was wobbly and didn’t look right and within seconds the match was over.

“She was denying anything and everything and later I find out there was a twinge, but later in the night her mom sends me a comforting text that she is okay!!! And I can finally fall asleep at 3:15 AM…”

While the loss, coming in Coupeville’s first game after 10 days off, dropped the Wolves to 2-4-3, coming so close to a very good La Conner (10-2) team while giving his bench a thorough workout was also cause for joy for Cowan.

“They did awesome!!! Last non-conference match, so I played a lot of bench players because I know once conference matches start my rotation will go down to about 13-14 players,” he said.

“We actually dominated the entire match and totally controlled possession throughout,” Cowan added. “I was so happy with the way we played.”

The Wolves, who kick off their six-game 1A Olympic League schedule with a trip to Chimacum Thursday, are a very young team.

CHS lost eight seniors, all key players, to graduation in the spring.

“Only having two returning seniors (Spark and Kirsten Pelroy) really allows us to rebuild and focus on building from the ground up and this team has proven that they will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come!!!,” Cowan said.

Cowan was especially pleased with his defense.

“Everything on our team starts and ends with our defensive unit and last night they were just on full tilt!!!,” Cowan said. “Lindsey Roberts especially, just her masterful ball control was unbelievable and her decision making as a freshman was truly remarkable!!

Lauren Bayne and Mckenzie Meyer are two outstanding, incredibly intelligent young ladies with brilliant soccer careers in front of them,” he added.

Also drawing big praise was junior Lauren Grove, who made the jump from volleyball this season and has moved right in as the starting goaltender.

“Our goalie, get out!!! I can’t say enough good things about her,” Cowan said. “Master performance last night!!! Lauren Grove is a beast in the box.

“Not sure where she has been or why she has not been playing soccer but I want to thank the soccer Gods for sending this athlete to the Lady Wolves because she is not only saving goals but turning heads and catching the attention of some big league coaches eyes!!!”

A dance party breaks out.

Someone teaches you the game, then you pass it on.

That’s the mantra for most soccer players, one on display Tuesday afternoon on the Coupeville High School practice field.

The current Wolves, most of them wearing snazzy warm-up jackets, took some time out from their own work to impart some bits of wisdom to a group of future CHS booters.

A couple of years ago, sharpshooters like Kalia Littlejohn and Bree Daigneault were on the receiving end of the lessons. Now they’re the ones helping to shape the young women who may one day succeed them.

It’s the soccer version of the circle of life.

And then, as always, the giggles took over.

Ridin’ the ferry. Ridin’ the ferry all year long.

It’s what Whidbey athletes and fans do, and the familiar routine played out again, as a chunk of Wolf Nation flooded onto a boat or two and bobbed its way over to Port Townsend for a dash of Friday Night Lights.

Coupeville returned with a win (28-26 over Chimacum), a share of first place in the 1A Olympic League standings and a string of snazzy photos courtesy travelin’ camera clicker John Fisken.

The faces change from year to year, but the feeling remains.

Something magical about small town football Fridays, on and off the field.

Littlejohn and Jenn Spark celebrate a goal.

Kalia Littlejohn doesn’t know what it’s like to play in a high school soccer game and not score.

Making it 2-for-2 to start her career, the Coupeville High School freshman rattled home another goal Thursday night.

Her score, one of two to come off the foot of a Wolf ninth grader (Lindsey Roberts punched home her first), wasn’t enough, though, as Coupeville fell 4-2 at South Whidbey.

The non-conference loss dropped the Wolves to 0-1-1 on the young season.

CHS gets its first home game of the season Saturday, when it hosts Forks at noon.

Facing a tough Falcon squad, Coupeville was hurt by bad luck and poor calls.

South Whidbey jumped on the board early, knocking home a goal in the third minute, and then things got fluky.

The Wolves inadvertently scored an own goal to make it 2-0, then had their goalie, Mckenzie Meyer, whistled for a dubious foul while fighting for a loose ball in the box.

Given a gift penalty kick, the Falcons slammed it home, carrying a 3-0 lead into the halftime locker room.

What could have been a blow-out took a turn for the positive, however, after CHS coach Troy Cowan went all Vince Lombardi on his team.

“I saw the girls coming off the pitch with their heads down and their spirits wilted; I knew I needed to light a fire under them and bring them back to life,” he said. “I reminded them that they had only really given up one goal and that in soccer there are two halves and we still had a half of soccer to play.

“I talked about what we were doing right, which was a lot, to be honest,” Cowan added. “We were better then this team across the board, we just weren’t getting the calls and the ball wasn’t bouncing our way every time.

“I reminded the girls to control what we were in charge of, and that was our effort!!”

Cowan made a few strategic changes which paid immediate dividends.

Senior captain Jenn Spark slid into the sweeper role, Sage Renninger moved into the middle “to help control the flow of the ball and to send quality through balls” and Littlejohn jumped up to forward.

The new flow hit pay dirt ten minutes into the half, when Spark pounded a rocket to Littlejohn, who promptly shattered her defender’s ankles en route to her second goal of the season.

Kalia has no mercy!,” said a jubilant Cowan.

Midway through the second half, Coupeville got another goal back off of a corner kick from the master, Spark.

“Not sure if you have ever had the privilege of watch Jennifer Spark serve up a corner kick, but it is a thing of beauty for us and probably a living nightmare for our opponents,” Cowan said.

Spark’s missile rattled around, zipping between May Rose to Bree Daigneault to Renninger and on to Roberts, who launched a laser shot into the back of the net.

With the loud South Whidbey crowd quieted, Coupeville came hard for the tying goal, only to lose Littlejohn to an injury with six minutes to play.

Luckily for the Wolves, Littlejohn’s mom, Dawn Hesselgrave, later confirmed the injury wasn’t a bad one and her daughter expects to be in the thick of action Saturday.

Without its top scorer, and desperate to force a tie, Coupeville moved one of its midfielders to forward to increase its offensive chances.

The move backfired, however, when South Whidbey took advantage of the mismatch and launched a successful counter-attack, scoring the game’s final goal in the waning seconds.

While it went into the record books as a loss, Cowan came away pleased with his squad’s resilience under fire and was already looking for some payback.

“I can’t wait to play them again next year!!!”

Like I said, not their first photo shoot…

Eventually, they played some soccer. And were pretty dang good at it.

But first things first for the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad on Day #1 of practice for a new season.

Running? Well, yeah, eventually…

But take one team blessed with athletes who enjoy posing for the camera, and one rovin’ photo man in John Fisken, and the first day of practice was all about the photo ops.

Then CHS coach Troy Cowan got control of his team again and they went back to work, content in the knowledge that they had, once again, won the internet.
