Luke Merriman

Luke Merriman: Legendary. (John Fisken and Ann Merriman photos)

He is the legend that keeps on giving.

A sharp-shooting, slick-dribbling, nattily-dressed hoops sensation who glides through the world, sly grin on his face.

Luke Merriman, who celebrates a birthday today, is the real deal — a genuine superstar who is genuinely one of the nicest guys you’ll meet.

He’s a killer on the hard-court (as long as he can keep his bones intact) and willing to put up with my shenanigans off-court, which is a sweet combo.

Few high schoolers would step up and not only accept, but seem to mostly enjoy, the hubbub created by me publishing an infamous photo of said player going to town on a hotdog (during the middle of a game).

Even as the photo was republished just about everywhere, becoming our own little Cow Town version of viral, Luke just did his version of McConaughey, sliding by with a slightly amused “Alright, alright, alright.”

Mr. Merriman is a cool customer all around, and this upcoming basketball season should be his moment to shine even brighter than ever.

With a wide open path to varsity hoops glory opening up in front of him, Luke, who will be a junior, should have considerable freedom to rain down three-point bombs alongside his fellow Wolf sharpshooters.

After a mass graduation and recent defections, CHS will have only two varsity players returning and a limited number of last year’s JV players around to move up.

Merriman could be the team’s secret weapon, though, a born shooter who lives to slay from distance and cocks an eyebrow when people start talking about the school record for treys in a single boys basketball season.

It’s 62, courtesy Brad Sherman in 2002-2003, if you’re wondering.

So my advice to Merriman?

Enjoy your birthday, bask in the cake (though check for any wandering paparazzi before putting fork to mouth), then get back to perfecting the rotation on your shot.

This is your season, your time to rise up and write your legend.

Happy birthday, Luke. Now go get ready to shred folks.

The paparazzi is branching out.

Camera clicker John Fisken, who has made a name for himself snapping pics at sporting events on and off Whidbey Island, has expanded his services.

Fisken, who by sheer coincidence celebrates a birthday today, has launched a web site — John’s Photos — where you can experience all of his snappy plans for the future.

While he’ll still be offering all the usual sports fare, a mix of action shots and behind the scenes portraits, Fisken will now be available to shoot just about anything, with two minor exceptions.

No weddings and he’s not going into the delivery room with you to document lil’ Billy or Sally’s probably-messy entrance into the world.

But, want a beautiful family portrait?

Want someone to document your prom, your military ball, your family reunion or a billion other things?

Need crystal clear pics documenting your real estate listings?

He’s the guy, boasting a strong work ethic and reasonable prices.

You could reach out to him cause it’s his birthday.

Or, you could do it because he’s very, very good at what he does, both in terms of picture quality, diversity of what he shoots and his ability to work with anyone.

I mean, he puts up with me for nine months a year, as I harass him day and night with increasingly bizarre and frantic sports shooting requests.

If he can survive that, he’ll do just fine getting great aunt Ethelyne to let him capture a photo worthy of putting on the mantle.

But don’t just take my word for it.

To see what I’m rambling about, pop over to his site and see what Fisken offers, while basking in some of the work he’s already produced.

Genna Wright

Genna Wright’s own athletic future is so bright, she has to wear shades.

It wouldn’t be the same without the fans.

Sure, you could play the games, keep the scores, hand out the trophies, but, without people hollering, things would feel off.

As he clicked away at recent CHS baseball and softball games, wanderin’ cameraman John Fisken let his lens slide into the stands and snapped these glossy pics for us.

Proof that fans can hold the spotlight just as strongly as the players they’ve come out to watch.

This has been the weirdest basketball season ever.

At least in terms of the schedule, which is all over the place.

Long stretches of absolutely no games, then teams playing three times in four days, then long stretches of nothing … and repeat over and over.

We’re currently in our last stretch of nothingness, with the CHS girls (8-3) sitting for nine days again.

The Wolves last played Jan. 9, when they trounced Mount Vernon Christian, and they don’t return to game action again until Jan. 19, when they travel to Chimacum.

The Coupeville boys (5-6) are sailing through a relatively “short” break, with five days between their win this past Saturday and a home game Friday against Stevenson.

That will be varsity only, though, so the Wolf JV boys will get to replicate the girls stretch of no on-court competition, sitting from Jan. 10-18.

So, to tide you, the fans, over, a few pics to remind you of what game action looks like.

Cause it’s the closest you’ll get to the real thing for a bit.
