‘Kana is spending her summer on the road.

Playing for the North Sound Lady Titans, a select AAU team based out of Everett, Coupeville High School junior Makana Stone is following the bouncing basketball across the country.

She and her seven teammates, who include Archbishop Thomas Murphy star Megan Wall, have played in recent tournaments in Oregon and Chicago.

Monday they leave for Tennessee for the prestigious Music City Madness Tournament, followed by a trip to California for the 12th annual MSNM Western Championships.

Both tourneys are NCAA certified events.

The Titans feature players from Jackson, Glacier Peak, Snohomish, Marysville-Pilchuck, Kamiak and Bush, in addition to Stone and Wall.

On the team’s website, the players are asked why they joined the select squad. For Stone, there were several reasons.

“I will get more experience with basketball,” she said. “It’s a good chance to be noticed, and I really enjoy basketball.

“I believe playing for this team will be competitive as well as fun.”

The “Face of the Future” belongs to CJ Smith.

Smith, who will be a junior at Coupeville High School in the fall, held off a hard-charging Kacie Kiel and 31 other contestants to win our 48-hour orgy of voting madness.

His reward — he’ll hold down the banner photo across the top of this blog through Jan. 1.

In the end, 34,719 votes were cast, with Smith topping the field with 7,290 votes (21%), edging out Kiel (5,869) and Makana Stone (4,684).

Skyler Lawrence and Zane Bundy rounded out the top five.

After moving to town midway through his sophomore season, Smith flashed signs of brilliance on the basketball court for the Wolf JV boys’ hoops squad.

Then he played a substantial role on the CHS baseball squad, which made it all the way to the state tourney.

Quick on the base paths and fluid in the field, Smith played several infield slots and eventually became the team’s #2 pitcher as the season wore on.

Makana Stone had her moment in the sun.

Racing at the 1A state track meet in Cheney Saturday, Stone busted out one of the best performances of her still-young career, finishing 2nd in the 400.

Along for the wild ride all season has been mom Eileen Stone, who captured the pics above of her splendid sophomore.

Eileen

“That’s my baby girl!!”

The Cascade Conference spoke. Then Makana Stone overruled them.

When All-Conference teams were announced for track and field, Stone was the lone Wolf to make the squad, being tabbed as a Second-Team pick in the 400.

Which is nice, but the speedy sophomore then went out and beat the girl who was ranked ahead of her in the biggest race of the season.

Anna Parker of King’s earned First-Team All-Conference honors for the regular season, but Stone bested her in Cheney at the 1A state meet, finishing second to Maya Jackson of Northwest.

Parker coasted across the line in third, more than a second off of Stone.

Jumping sports, let’s just say … game, set, match, Miss Stone.
