Mia Littlejohn is not the only Wolf soccer player getting some notice.

Senior CHS goaltender Lauren Grove has been honored by MaxPreps as one of its state players of the week.

The award, which is sponsored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, goes to a male and female athlete from each state on a weekly basis during the pitch season.

Grove, picked during the week of Sept. 26-Oct 2., is being honored for her work in net Sept. 19-25.

That covers her performances during a pair of non-conference games — a 5-1 win over Mount Vernon Christian and a 4-1 victory against North Mason.

Mia Littlejohn's 16 goals has her in a tie for most in the state. (John Fisken photo)

Mia Littlejohn has scored 16 goals in six games, tying her for the state lead. (John Fisken photo)

It’s a two-woman battle, and one of the combatants is a Wolf.

Coupeville High School junior booter Mia Littlejohn is tied for the state lead in goals scored, as least according to MaxPreps.

With four hat tricks in six games (and two of those hat tricks including a fourth score), Littlejohn has rattled home 16 goals, which ties her with Cascade Christian’s Nicole Souply.

No one else on the list has more than 10 goals.

Now, there is a caveat to this, which is not every school stays on top of reporting to MaxPreps.

But, tough for them then, I guess.

Littlejohn is also second in the state in total points, with 33 (you get two points for a goal and one for an assist).

Soupley, who has played in one more game (Cascade Christian is 7-0 to Coupeville’s 4-1-1) sits with 40 points (16 goals, 8 assists) currently.

Up-the-moment Wolf stats (as seen on MaxPreps):

Goals:

Mia Littlejohn 16 (tied for #1 in state)
Kalia Littlejohn 4
Bree Daigneault 1
Avalon Renninger 1
Lindsey Roberts 1

Assists:

Sage Renninger 5
Daigneault 1
K. Littlejohn 1
M. Littlejohn 1
Roberts 1

Points:

M. Littlejohn 33 (#2 in state)
K. Littlejohn 9
S. Renninger 5
Daigneault 3
Roberts 3
A. Renninger 2

Saves in goal:

Lauren Grove 20

Shutouts:

PS — As Coupeville prepares for its first-place showdown with Klahowya (4-0-1) Tuesday, the Wolves are now ranked #15 by ScoreCzar, the highest the nefarious computer wizard has ever placed them.

Work the bag, blow up the polls. (John Fisken photo)

Well, if I was Klahowya, I think I’d be peeved right about now.

The Eagles are coming off of a 6-4 season on the gridiron, a second-place finish in the 1A Olympic League, and a trip to the postseason.

And yet, MaxPreps ranks them an astounding 374 slots BEHIND South Whidbey in a national football poll released today.

Yes, the same stinky cheese Falcons who staggered to a 1-9 mark last year.

It’s a strange, strange world in Poll Land, where Coupeville, which also went 1-9 a year ago, gets a little respect.

Not much, but at least a taste nationally, if not in-state.

The Wolves open at #52 (out of 55) teams in 1A, two slots ahead of Chimacum, which it lost to last year.

State-wide, Coupeville is #277 of 299 teams, while nation-wide, the Wolves are #12,997 of 14,578 teams.

Yes, you read that last number right — there are more than 14,000 schools playing high school football in the USA, from #1 IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL to #14,578 Navajo Pine, NM.

Defending 4A champion Gonzaga Prep, sitting at #213 nationally, is the top-rated Washington state school.

In case you were curious.

But, since Coupeville won’t be coming anywhere near GP, let’s look instead at how MaxPreps thinks the Wolves stack up against the 10 teams which are actually on the schedule:

South Whidbey (45th in 1A, 256th in state, 11,833rd in nation)
La Conner (12th in 2B, 179th in state, 8,097th in nation)
Nooksack Valley (22nd in 1A, 180th in state, 8,106th in nation)
Charles Wright Academy (30th in 1A, 224th in state, 10,385th in nation)
Vashon Island (37th in 1A, 238th in state, 11,237th in nation)
Port Townsend (13th in 1A, 116th in state, 5,529th in nation)
Bellevue Christian (35th in 1A, 230th in state, 10,893rd in nation)
Klahoywa (47th in 1A, 264th in state, 12,207th in nation)
Chimacum (54th in 1A, 280th in state, 13,143rd in nation)
Cascade Christian (14th in 1A, 121st in state, 5,834th in nation)

So, based on the preseason polls, Coupeville is slated for a second straight 1-9 mark.

But, that’s why they play the games.

Go out, pull off an upset or two and show the computers they know diddly and squat.

In between ranting at computers, let's take a moment to say happy birthday to freshman QB Hunter Downes.

In between ranting at computers, let’s take a moment to say happy birthday to freshman QB Hunter Downes.

Insanity, thy name is “Debbie.”

She’s made of bits and bolts, one and zeros, and she’s an idiot. A stark, raving moron. Of that I have little doubt.

Now, the “Debbie” I speak of is the computer that sits in the corner (hopefully hanging its head in shame at the moment) at the core of http://www.scoreczar.org/.

Admittedly, she has been right far more than wrong in the past, but there are moments that make you think her operator spilled their beverage of choice all over “Debbie” and short-circuited her main frame.

How else to explain that in the newest rankings, the Coupeville High School football squad finds itself SIX spots behind a team it just bushwhacked?

That’s right, the Wolves jumped out to a 29-7 lead on Port Townsend last Friday, then, after losing their QB in the third quarter with a hip pointer, held on and made a stellar defensive stand, picking off passes left and right, to secure a 29-21 win.

The victory puts Coupeville at 3-1 overall, 2-0 in 1A Olympic League play, a game up on Port Townsend (2-2, 1-1) and Klahowya (1-3, 1-1) and two up on Chimacum (0-4, 0-2).

And yet, “Debbie” has Port Townsend ranked #17 in 1A currently (down from #10 before its loss) and Coupeville at #23 (up a measly three spots after BEATING the #10 team).

Whaaaaaaaaaaaa??????????

Coupeville has a better record (3-1 vs. 2-2). It’s undefeated against 1A teams, with its only loss coming to a 2A Sequim squad that’s also 3-1.

Port Townsend’s defining win this season is against Klahowya, which is ranked #32.

The Wolves have wins against teams that currently sit at #17 (guess who) and #30 (South Whidbey) and their third win was against #42 (Chimacum), which is better than Port Townsend’s other win, which came against #51 (Bellevue Christian).

If we want to keep on throwing out stats, the Wolves have outscored the Redhawks 113-104 and their quarterback, leading rusher and receiver all have better stats.

Plus, let’s go back for a second … THEY BEAT PORT TOWNSEND.

On the field, between the lines, they were the better team. They ARE the better team.

But somewhere a computer hums a merry tune and spews nonsense, even if no one with a lick of sense believes her.

To gaze at the complete 1A rankings (in which SIX teams with a .500 record also sit ahead of Coupeville) pop over to:

Cameron Toomey-Stout (John Fisken photos)

Cameron Toomey-Stout wants to know how to make the computers love Coupeville a tad bit more. (John Fisken photos)

Joel Walstad

Joel Walstad has the answer. “Just win, baby!”

Rankings, what are they good for?

Well, starting arguments. That’s a given.

Coming off a 48-24 drubbing of Chimacum (in which they led 41-0 at the half), the Coupeville High School football squad jumped back up 13 slots when “Debbie,” the sometimes-evil, sometimes-friendly computer at ScoreCzar.org, issued her latest rankings.

The Wolves (2-1 overall, 1-0 in Olympic League play) are now ranked #26 in 1A, with this Friday’s foe, Port Townsend, coming in at #10.

Defending state champ Freeman is locked in at #1.

Coupeville’s fellow league mates, Klahowya and Chimacum, come in at #34 and #46. Island rival South Whidbey is at #39.

The only point of contention (and it’s a small one) is that four teams with losing records (#19 Kings, #21 Medical Lake, #22 Stevenson and #24 Deer Park) are ranked ahead of CHS.

Debbie” generally feels losing to a “good” team is better than beating a “bad” one when she spits out rankings.

I would argue that winning, over whatever teams you play, trumps all, since that’s sort of the point of organized sports.

But, again, not that big of a deal. Even at 1-2, King’s is surely dangerous, as always.

What’s slightly more ridiculous are the rankings at MaxPreps.com.

Not where Coupeville is placed, as they are at #31, but that two teams that are 0-3 are AHEAD of the Wolves.

I give you #19 Connell (outscored 124-17 this season) and #24 La Center (blasted 113-3), ladies and gentlemen. And I say, give me a freakin’ break.

Any time where losing big to “quality” teams is more highly valued than WINNING — La Salle (Union) Gap is merely 3-0 but ranked four slots BEHIND Connell — gets my dander up.

But I’m an idiot, not a computer, so what do I know?
