JV boys sizzle from behind the arc

They made it rain.

Throwing down eight three-balls Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball squad blitzed host Granite Falls 49-42.

The non-conference victory lifts the young Wolves to 3-6 on the season, with two more games on the schedule.

The JV closes with road games against Northwest 2B/1B League foes Friday Harbor (Feb. 4) and La Conner (Feb. 10).

Coupeville will enter that home stretch awash in a nice afterglow, thanks to Ryan Blouin, Nick Guay, and Zane Oldenstadt scorching the Granite nets.

The first two of that trio connected on three treys apiece, while Oldenstadt drilled the bottom out of the net twice from distance.

CHS actually trailed 15-10 at the first break Saturday, then found its shooting groove.

Six different Wolves scratched their name in the scoring column during a 15-8 second quarter run, before Coupeville blew things open with a 16-6 tear in the third frame.

From there the sweet-shooting assassins coasted in for the win, the first of two claimed by Coupeville’s male hoops players on this night.

Guay topped the scoring chart with 13 points, while Oldenstadt tossed in 11 and Blouin added nine.

Mikey Robinett (6), William Davidson (5), Hunter Bronec (3), and Johnny Porter (2) also scored, with Landon Roberts, Hurlee Bronec, and Jack Porter all seeing floor time.

Wolves make the nets pop

A loss, but plenty of fight

The rim was a relentless foe.

Despite getting plenty of strong looks at the basket Wednesday, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team struggled all night to get the ball to stay in the bucket.

That, combined with an opportunistic Friday Harbor defense, doomed the Wolves during a 58-28 home loss.

The defeat drops Coupeville’s JV to 1-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 1-5 overall.

The Wolves came out cold in the mid-week game, and the visitors took advantage, claiming a lead they would never relinquish on the night’s very first bucket.

Down 8-0 in the early going, Coupeville got back within 12-8 right before the end of the first quarter, only to see Friday Harbor net a three-ball to end the frame with an exclamation point.

The best Wolf bucket in the early going came on a swooping layup by Johnny Porter, who snagged a crisp entry pass from Ryan Blouin and beat his man to the rim.

But Coupeville was never able to put together back-to-back buckets in the second or third quarter and saw its deficit mushroom.

Trailing 26-13 at the half, the Wolves slipped behind 38-21 heading into the fourth quarter.

Nick Guay caressed the net on a pair of three-balls, then added another one in the final period, but Friday Harbor used an aggressive defense to force frequent turnovers, frustrating Hunter Smith’s young team.

CHS hung tough, however, putting together a 7-0 run late in the fourth quarter to keep the visitors honest.

Guay finished with a team-high 13 points, including his trio of treys, while Jack Porter knocked down four points in support.

Blouin (3), Hurlee Bronec (2), Johnny Porter (2), Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim (2), and Mikey Robinett (2) also scored for the Wolves, while Carson Field, Landon Roberts, and Hunter Bronec also saw floor time.

Roberts, playing as proud mom Sherry beamed at him while working the scorer’s table, was ferocious on defense.

Even with his team trailing big late, he remained scrappy, scrambling back the length of the court to trip up a Friday Harbor ball handler and make away with the ball.

Landon Roberts was a standout on defense.

Grab the board, snap the shot

The gym was alive once more.

The Coupeville High School boys basketball teams were in action at home Tuesday night, with the Wolf varsity winning a first-place battle and the JV fighting until the final seconds.

Wolves, Hurricanes stage battle royal

There’s a learning curve.

With six freshmen and six sophomores, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team is a young squad still fine-tuning its game.

Tuesday night’s tilt with visiting Mount Vernon Christian is a perfect example.

The Wolves, playing for only the second time in a month thanks to bad weather, the holidays, and the pandemic, fell 43-39 to the Hurricanes.

But that score doesn’t really reflect the wild twists and turns experienced by a Coupeville team which now sits at 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-4 overall.

The Wolves came out ice cold, almost got run off the floor to begin things, then got sizzlin’ hot and roared all the way back from a 17-point deficit to reclaim the lead.

Only to see the game slip away in the waning moments thanks to an unbelievable MVC advantage at the free throw line.

In the end, veteran CHS coach Randy Bottorff was left to softly shake his head as he reflected on the battle royal while standing in a now-quiet gym.

“They’re getting there,” he said. “Some bumps along the way, but they’re learning.”

MVC blew out to a 17-8 lead after one quarter of play, raining down buckets from all directions on the Wolves.

But this Coupeville squad is a resilient one, and it went right back to work, flipping the score on the Hurricanes in the next frame.

Nick Guay went off for five points in the second quarter, including draining a three-ball, and CHS got scoring from six different players during its own 17-8 tear.

With the game knotted at 25-25 at the half, Coupeville pushed ahead in the third quarter thanks to the wham-bam combo of Guay and Hunter Bronec, who combined to outscore MVC 10-7.

But the win wasn’t to be, as the Hurricanes repeatedly went to the foul line down the stretch, using an 11-4 run to close the game and keep their record spotless.

MVC hit 17 of 25 at the free throw stripe in the game, while Coupeville was … 0-1.

Owen Heinze, who paced Mount Vernon with 17 points, was 11-13 himself on charity shots, and the Wolves couldn’t overcome the disparity.

“They were strong enough to get to the line, and we weren’t,” Bottorff said. “We’ll keep working on getting the guys to move their feet on defense, and not get caught reaching.”

Hunter Bronec finished with a team-high 12 points for Coupeville, while Guay banked in 11 and Zane Oldenstadt knocked down six.

Hurlee Bronec (4), Carson Field (2), Ryan Blouin (2), and Mikey Robinett (2) also scored for the Wolves, with Landon Roberts, William Davidson, Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, and Jack Porter also seeing floor time.
