Friday night there was no liquid sunshine as in earlier games, just Ezra Boilek raining down goals. (Jackie Saia photo)

Does Ezra Boilek know who Jim Croce was?

Maybe, maybe not, but Friday night the former lived up to the words sung by the latter during pregame warmups.

And he’s bad, bad Leroy Brown.

The baddest man in the whole damn town.

Badder than old King Kong.

And meaner than a junkyard dog.

Now, Ezra Boilek actually seems like a pretty mellow dude in real life, but on the pitch, he was Grace Academy’s worst nightmare.

Raining down not one, not two, but FIVE goals in one half of play, the sharpshooter with the golden leg spurred the Wolves to a resounding 5-2 win under Friday Night Lights.

The victory lifts Coupeville to 2-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-2 overall, and sets up a royal rumble next Tuesday, Oct. 10.

The Wolves, currently ranked #5 in Washington Interscholastic Activities Association RPI, travel to Friday Harbor to face the defending state champs, who sit at 3-0, 6-1 and #2.

The two schools played in the season opener, with Coupeville falling in a game considered a non-conference affair.

This time around, the game counts in the league standings and has huge playoff implications.

Friday night was all about not getting caught looking too far ahead, and Coupeville took care of business.

Squaring off with a scrappy Grace Academy squad, the Wolves launched an attack on the goal, and Boilek, who spent his freshman season as a kicker for the CHS football team, finished things off with a bang.

His first score came from the right side a few minutes into play, then he cranked goal #2 with a little extra mustard on it.

Score #3 came from the middle of the field, Boilek slapping the ball into the left corner of the net, then wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am he rattled home two more goals before the game’s first 40 minutes were up.

Is his five-goal nuclear explosion a school single-game record for Wolf boys?

It appears so, since CHS career scoring leaders Abraham Leyva and Derek Leyva, who tallied 45 and 38 goals respectively, both topped out at four goals in one game.

So, raise one finger, then two, three, four, and finally, the full hand for Boilek, who was repeatedly mobbed by excited teammates.

In one half Boilek went from one career goal to six, pushing him to a tie for #19 on the all-time Wolf boys’ list, along with Xavier Murdy, Zack Nall, and James Wood.

Grace Academy did manage one goal of its own midway through the first half, then scraped out a second one late in the game after Coupeville had gone to a JV-heavy lineup.

When Boilek wasn’t crushing the life out of the ball, teammates Preston Epp, Ayden Wyman, and Cael Wilson had strong looks at the net, but came up just short of scoring.

Coupeville’s defense was on point all night, especially in the first half, with Hank Milnes, Andrew Williams, Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim and Co. clamping down hard on any potential shooters.

Get in, get out, make it as painless as possible.

Picking apart a winless Friday Harbor team which couldn’t generate much offense, or make much of a defensive stand, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad rolled to a straight-sets win Tuesday night.

It wasn’t spectacular, but it didn’t need to be.

It was precision work, it came out in favor of the Wolves to a 25-10, 25-9, 25-5 tune, and it handed CHS its first home victory of the season.

Now 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-4 overall, Coupeville is better than its record might sound.

Three of those losses came in agonizing five-set battle royales, while another one was to undefeated 1B powerhouse Neah Bay.

Squaring off with a Friday Harbor team which slipped to 0-8 on the season, the Wolves controlled every aspect of the match.

“We played clean, we scrambled really well in pursuit of the ball, and we played in our system tonight,” said coach Cory Whitmore as he pondered the sweet idea of an early dinner for once.

Katie Marti got things jumpin’, reeling off four straight points on her serve to begin the night, and it was mostly all gravy and good times from there.

The rallies were short, and generally ended in one way — with a Wolf mashing the life force out of the volleyball.

Whether it was Mia Farris and Lyla Stuurmans flying in from the side to tattoo winners, or young gun Teagan Calkins bounding skyward to crush a spike, the visitors had few answers.

In the middle of things, serene senior Grey Peabody was a tower of power, patrolling the net and refusing entrance to any wayward shots trying to sneak over the barrier.

The second and third sets were more of the same, plastering a smile on the faces of most Wolf fans as they watched their spikers cruise to a lopsided win.

The Wolves peppered Friday Harbor with 21 official service aces, with Calkins collecting eight of those as mom Jackie Saia nodded along in approval of her daughter’s artistry.

With the win in hand, Coupeville turns its attention to Saturday, when Forks (6-2) arrives in town for a non-conference scrap.

That’s the second match in a run of five-straight home tilts for the Wolves, including the annual cancer awareness night next week.

The event, which raises money for the WhidbeyHealth breast cancer foundation includes a raffle.

Wolf Moms have collected 15 items, including “some really great baskets and gift cards.”

Tickets will be $5 apiece or $20 for five.

Tuesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 dig
Teagan Calkins — 3 kills, 3 digs, 8 aces, 1 block assist
Mia Farris — 6 kills, 4 digs, 4 aces
Jada Heaton — 1 kill, 1 block assist
Issabel Johnson — 1 dig, 1 ace
Katie Marti — 1 kill, 1 dig, 16 assists, 3 aces
Madison McMillan — 2 digs, 3 aces
Grey Peabody — 5 kills
Lyla Stuurmans — 5 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces

It was the nailbiter everyone expected.

Playing on the road for only the second time in seven games this season, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad fell 3-2 Tuesday in a heartbreaker at Mount Vernon Christian.

The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Wolves, ranked #7 in the state, and leaves them at 1-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-2 overall.

MVC, which began the day ranked #4 in RPI, is 1-1 in league, 7-2-1 overall.

Friday Harbor and Orcas Island, which played for the state title last season, currently sit atop the NWL standings at 2-0.

Tuesday’s tilt in Mount Vernon pitted two strong teams against each other, with the Hurricanes able to barely pull out the victory.

“Boy, I wanted that one,” said Coupeville coach Robert Wood. “Very emotional game, which of course means physical.”

The Wolves first score came courtesy an own goal, as MVC defenders got confused on who was supposed to pick up the ball and accidentally knocked the orb past their own goaltender.

CHS senior Cole White added his own goal, knocking a free kick into the back of the net for his team-leading sixth score of the season.

It was the 10th goal of his stellar prep career, making him just the 12th Coupeville boy to crack double digits scoring.

The Wolves get a prime chance to bounce right back, hosting Grace Academy Oct. 6 under Friday Night Lights.

Kickoff is 6:00 PM, admission is free, and the visiting Eagles will arrive on Whidbey carrying a 1-5 record.

It’s a perfect split.

Coupeville High School fall sports teams have six contests next week, with three at home, and three on the road.

Wolf volleyball has the sweetest schedule, hosting Friday Harbor Tuesday and Forks Saturday, while CHS soccer gets a split decision.

The high-flying booters, who boast the best record of any Coupeville team at 4-1, hit the road Tuesday for a major matchup with Mount Vernon Christian.

Then the Wolves bring it home under Friday Night Lights, playing host to Grace Academy.

That leaves football and cross country, who will both listen to the sounds of the bus wheels going round and round this coming week.

The gridiron giants travel to Bellingham Friday, while the harriers run Saturday at the Hole in the Wall Invitational in Arlington.

Flawless? No. Thrilling? Yes.

The Coupeville High School soccer squad might not have delivered its best performance of the season Friday, but the Wolf booters still had way too much firepower for visiting Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood.

Raining down goals under Friday Night Lights and using a suffocating defense to allow goaltender Hurlee Bronec plenty of rest time, CHS strolled to a crowd-pleasing 4-0 win.

The victory, coming in both team’s Northwest 2B/1B League opener, lifts Coupeville to 1-0 in conference play, 4-1 overall.

Now, the Wolves will carry a four-game winning streak on the road next week, traveling to Mount Vernon Christian for a matchup with a dangerous Hurricanes squad.

Coupeville will need to clean up its passing to hang with MVC, a perennial state tourney contender, but the goal-scoring, enthusiasm, and team camaraderie is already present.

The Wolves have proven quite adept at bashing away and scoring goals this season, and that was on display Friday night.

Cole White broke open a scoreless tie in the game’s 21st minute, peppering the CPC goalie with a laser, before fellow senior Nick Guay popped in a shot seven minutes later.

Around the two first-half scores, the Wolves had numerous other chances which just missed.

Preston Epp and Guay slapped shots which drifted just a bit at the end, sliding past the net, while Ayden Wyman was robbed by a nice save from the visiting netminder.

Awarded a penalty kick after being knocked around in a scrum, Wyman, who tallied 13 goals in two years with the Wolf girls’ team, came dangerously close to becoming the first CHS female to score in a boys’ game.

While she was (barely) denied, Coupeville picked up another two goals after the halftime break.

White punched in his second score of the night 15 minutes into the second half, before Preston Epp went on a rampage, beating the CPC goalie on a breakaway to cap the offensive output.

Facing off with a defense led by Hank Milnes and Andrew Williams, Cedar Park had few chances to score.

CPC’s best try came courtesy a penalty kick, but the shooter went wide right, perhaps chilled by the sight of Bronec coldly staring him down.

Or the gathered Wolf fans screaming and thumping the metal seats, creating a wall of sound which rippled across the prairie.

With his two scores Friday, White moves into a tie with Guay for the season lead, as both gunners have tallied five apiece.

Now with 13 career goals, Guay jumps a rung, and is tied with Wolf grad Aidan Wilson for #6 all-time, while White has nine celebrations.

That ties him with pitch legend Jon Chittim for #12.

Preston Epp, just a junior, has two goals on the season, and seven for his career, as he also continues to move up the list.

He already owns the family record, edging older brother Cameron, who scored four times during his own strong prep career.

#7 has scored seven times in his CHS career. (Jackie Saia photo)
