There’s a second Wolf in the water.

Coupeville High School swim ace Finn Price has spent the past two seasons training and traveling with South Whidbey and Kamiak, as CHS doesn’t have its own pool program.

Now, Wolf freshman Alexandra Lo is making the journey up to Oak Harbor, where she competes as a Wolf while sharing the water at the John Vanderzicht Pool with the Wildcats.

A veteran of the chlorine world from a three-year run with the North Whidbey Aquatic Club, Lo has been swimming in events such as freestyle, medley, and breaststroke.

After the high school seasons wraps, she’ll hop right back in the pool and rejoin her NWAC teammates.

Alexandra Lo, whose older sister Elizabeth is the CHS cheer manager this fall, previously ran cross country in middle school, where she earned the Cascade League’s first-ever sportsmanship award as a 7th grader.

Heading for the finish line.

Bernie Lange keeps an eye on things. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Friday Night Lights shone down on Bernie Lange one more time.

The lifelong Oak Harbor High School sports fan, who is believed to have seen more ‘Cat football games than any other alumni ever, returned to his perch high atop Wildcat Stadium this weekend.

Having just celebrated his 98th birthday, the Class of ’45 grad and World War II vet was on hand to see Oak Harbor pull out a last-second 19-13 win over visiting Stanwood.

The victory lifts the OHHS gridiron squad to 3-0 for the first time since 2018, with a road trip to Sedro-Woolley (also 3-0) next up on the schedule.

Lange, who founded Trico Heating, attended Wildcat football games, home and away, for 70+ years, rarely missing a game, except for the occasional wedding or hospital stay.

He and wife Mary have also been in the stands for decades of basketball, softball, and baseball games, as well as tennis and wrestling matches.

Bernie Lange, who heads up a family sending its fourth generation through the OHHS hallways this year with freshman Henry Lange, currently resides at the Regency on Whidbey assisted living facility.

But Friday night, he was home once more, with fellow fans singing him “Happy Birthday” and the latest incarnation of the Wildcats pulling off some late-game magic.

Exactly the way he planned it.

Current Cats celebrate a 3-0 start with their biggest fan.

A legend is slated to return to Wildcat Memorial Stadium this Friday.

With the Oak Harbor High School football team a somewhat surprising 2-0 after wins over Inglemoor and Ferndale, the ‘Cats host Stanwood (0-2) in a 7:00 PM game.

When toe connects with ball on the opening kickoff, OHHS super fan Bernie Lange is expected to be back in the stands, distinctive voice cheering on his squad like in the old days.

Now 98 years old as of Sept. 17, the former coach and player doesn’t get to as many games as he once did, making his return to his stomping grounds even more special.

There was a time when Lange didn’t miss a game. Like ever.

Football was his primary passion — there was a stretch where he was in the stands, home or away, for all but a dozen from a 700+ game span — but he was also a devoted basketball and wrestling buff.

Add in baseball and softball games, and even tennis matches when their daughter played the sport for OHHS, and Lange and wife Mary have been the ultimate good luck charms for Wildcat athletics.

A few years back, while talking to former Whidbey News-Times Sports Editor Jim Waller, a man who also coached Wildcat teams for 30+ years, Bernie Lange was asked what drew him to watching local high school athletes.

It was the “enthusiasm and passion of the players,” he said.

They did it not for cash or glory, but for the love of the game.

There was the thrill of seeing the Wildcats finally break through and win a state football title in 2006 with a team which included current Coupeville High School gridiron coaches Bennett Richter and Bobby Carr.

And there were a lot of less memorable games, many of which have mercifully faded with time.

But they all were part of the tapestry of life, as the OHHS Class of 1945 grad, who was an accomplished Wildcat athlete himself in his younger days, has lived out a long-term love affair with a school and its athletes.

Lange was absent from the stands during a year-plus tour of duty with the United States Army during World War II, before returning to The Rock, where he has made his home since.

He played in a city basketball league, raced dirt-track cars, then moved into coaching, starting with little league.

The youth basketball and football programs in Oak Harbor were founded through the efforts of Lange and his compatriots and thrive to this day.

Through it all, he lived the life of a die-hard Wildcat fan, providing vocal support to generations of athletes repping the purple and gold.

He witnessed future National Football League draftees Kenny Lee and John Brady play for Oak Harbor.

Was there for landmark moments, such as Wildcat quarterback Jeff Short leading a remarkable fourth-quarter rally against Anacortes in 1966 to preserve an undefeated season.

Or hoops star Mark Anderson leave it all on the floor, sparking a five-overtime win against Meadowdale in ’83 on the hardwood.

Sometimes the memorable achievements were accomplished by his own family members.

Such as when Lange’s younger brother, Rich, snagged a long reception to cement a come-from-behind win over La Conner way back in ’47.

Through it all, he has been as loyal as any fan.

Friday night, as a new generation of Wildcat gridiron stars make a bid to go 3-0 in front of their home faithful, Lange will be back in his perch, high atop the stadium.

An Oak Harbor lifer, doing what he enjoys most.

The spikes are flying once more.

Volleyball season kicked off Saturday with a three-school jamboree at Oak Harbor High School, with Coupeville and South Whidbey traveling north for the day.

The Wolves were led by JV coach Ashley Menges and middle school volleyball guru Cris Matochi, who stepped in for varsity head man Cory Whitmore, who had a family comittment.

Jamborees are all about getting into sync, and getting a chance to experience competition, often with a new lineup.

“My goals for them today were to get comfortable in rotations and make sure they knew them, and to have fun,” Menges said.

“Once the rotations are out of the way, then I really get to start coaching.

“So, for about the first two sets we were still learning those, but once everyone seemed to understand, the day went great.”

The Wolf JV squad is a mix of veterans and newbies, and they quickly found a rhythm.

“A lot of really good things happened today, and this group is really great about applying feedback immediately,” Menges said.

“They’re quick learners, and the immediate gratification they feel when things go right is really great to see so early in the season.

“I’ll say pretty much everyone had a great day, and a lot of the freshmen really impressed me today.”

Now it’s on to the start of the regular season, with a road trip to South Whidbey set for Tuesday.

Menges, herself a former standout Wolf spiker, is ready for the current generation to hit the floor and come out swinging.

“Lots of good things, and lots of things to work on of course, but it was a great start to this season,” she said.

“I’m totally proud of these girls and I hope they are as well.”

That other high school up North graduates. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

We’re venturing into enemy territory here … sort of.

The name of the blog is still Coupeville Sports, but technically, I am a graduate of Oak Harbor High School, and most of all, I rarely say no to free photos.

So, here you go on an otherwise quiet Saturday night — some fresh pics of the OHHS Class of 2024 getting diplomas, courtesy John Fisken.
