One and done.

Coupeville’s first, and most likely last, season as a member of the most dangerous boys tennis league in the state came to an end Friday in Seattle.

The Wolves, competing at the Emerald City League tourney at the Amy Yee Tennis Center, had all six of their players eliminated in the first round.

#1 singles player Jakobi Baumann put up a strong fight before falling 6-4, 6-2 to Cody Clayhold of Bear Creek, while Drake Borden was bounced 6-0, 6-2 by Josh Davydov of Seattle Academy.

In doubles competition, both CHS duos also fell in straight sets.

Zach Ginnings and Jacob Burke were blanked 6-0, 6-0 by Anders and Tate Gibbons of Seattle Academy, then Tiger Johnson and Jaschon Baumann lost 6-1, 6-1 to Quinn Chow and Griffin Murch of Bush.

It was the final prep tennis match for the Baumann twins and Johnson, as all three graduate next spring.

While Coupeville didn’t get far in the postseason, the Wolves put together a better-than-expected season, finishing 7-6 in league play, 8-6 overall.

CHS claimed fourth-place in the eight-team league, trumping Bush, South Whidbey, Bear Creek and Eastside Prep.

The only ECL teams the Wolves were unable to beat were Seattle Academy, University Prep, and Overlake, a trio of schools which have combined to win a startling majority of 1A state tennis titles in the past decade.

Sylvia Hurlburt, here with mom Kristin on a sunnier day than Saturday, won three races Saturday and qualified for districts in a fourth.

Sylvia Hurlburt stalked the oval like a caged lioness, her eyes burning through anyone who dared to step into her path.

Then, a slight hidden smile, and the Coupeville High School senior dropped the hammer, taking the baton from close friend Makana Stone and hitting the jets to completely obliterate whatever small resistance still stood in the path of the Wolf 4 x 100 relay squad.

As Hurlburt blazed down the back stretch, ballet-trained legs churning, she romped across the finish line nearly two seconds ahead of her closest rival — an eternity in the event.

A solid punch to the solar plexus of anyone who dared to step to her and teammates Stone, Lauren Grove and Lindsey Roberts, it was the perfect stamp to a very impressive Saturday for the CHS track and field squad.

Competing head-to-head with their three 1A Olympic League rivals at the sub-district meet in Bremerton, the Wolves piled up 12 wins and 13 PRs while sending a wave of athletes on to next weekend’s district meet.

The final stop before the state tourney, districts, which pits the best of the Olympic League vs. the cream of the Nisqually League, will be May 20-21, back in Bremerton.

To get there, the Wolves had to claim a top three finish Saturday.

For those who finished fourth, a small flicker of hope will live on, until they find out if their time or distance was better than the fifth-place finisher from the Nisqually League meet.

Demonstrating depth across the board, Coupeville tied Klahowya 77-77 for the 1A girls title, edging out Port Townsend (76) and Chimacum (24).

The Wolf boys finished second, narrowly nipped 82-78 by Klahowya in a case of what-could-have-been.

Port Townsend (65) and Chimacum (38) rounded out the team scores.

The question mark comes from two injuries suffered early in the meet.

Lathom Kelley and Gabe Eck both claimed PRs in the long jump, but tweaked things while jumping in hazy rain conditions and  sat out the rest of the meet.

Those who did stay on their feet had huge days, topped by Dalton Martin, who shattered PRs in the shot put, discus and javelin by a combined total of nearly 10 feet.

His wins in the shot put and discus were matched by victories from Danny Conlisk (800), Jordan Ford (pole vault), Mitchell Carroll (triple jump), Stone (400, 800), Hurlburt (200), Roberts (long jump) and both the 4 x 1 and 4 x 2 girls relay squads.

The Wolves netted 32 district qualifiers, and may kick that up to 35 after the Olympic and Nisqually League compare sub-districts results.

A preliminary scan of Athletic.net seems to indicate Jared Helmstadter (400) and Eck (long jump) will slide through, as their fourth-place marks Saturday trump the #5 result posted in the Nisqually League.

Wolf frosh Chris Battaglia, who went 4-10 in the high jump to finish fourth, has the exact same mark as that put up by Zach Douglass of Bellevue Christian, fifth in the Nisqually League.

How that tie will be decided is unknown.

Maybe they should order some more title banners?

By the time the Olympic League All-Division Championships were done Saturday, both of the Coupeville High School track and field teams exited Poulsbo as top dogs.

The Wolves finished 6th out of 11 teams in the boys team battle and 8th on the girls side.

More importantly, both squads finished ahead of 1A rivals Port Townsend, Chimacum and Klahowya, while the boys also beat 2A schools Bremerton and North Mason.

Large 2A schools North Kitsap (boys) and Olympic (girls) topped the standings, which featured a full-tilt battle between the seven 2A schools and four 1A schools which currently call the league home.

Coupeville will send different athletes to the league’s JV Championships Monday in Silverdale, in an event which is considered a “last chance qualifier” before the full postseason run starts next weekend.

The Wolves travel to Bremerton Saturday, May 14 for sub-districts.

After that come districts May 20 and the state meet May 26-28 for athletes who qualify.

Saturday was topped by a school record, two wins, the fastest time recorded by a 1A relay team this year and 12 PRs.

Wolf senior Jordan Ford shattered his own school mark in the pole vault, soaring 12-6, a full six inches higher than his previous best.

Meanwhile, Makana Stone (400) and Dalton Martin (discus) ended up at the top of the awards stands, while the girls 4 x 200 relay unit burnt up the oval.

Ripping off a season-best time of 1:46.90, the quartet of Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts, Sylvia Hurlburt and Stone sit more than two seconds ahead of every other 1A team as they continue their quest for the promised land.

The only relay team in school history to win a state title is the boys 4 x 400 in 2006.

The strong work in the 4 x 2 made up for a rare snafu in the 4 x 1, where a juggled baton hand-off left the Wolf girls bringing up the rear for the first time this season.

Almost everywhere you looked Saturday, someone was doing something spectacular, with 10 Wolves nabbing PRs.

Leading the pack were senior Lathom Kelley (triple jump, long jump) and freshman Danny Conlisk (800, 1600) who nailed personal bests in both of their events.
