Young Wolves tip-off hoops season

They’ll get to see what they’re made of, that’s for sure.

The Coupeville Middle School boys basketball squads opened play Wednesday afternoon on the road in Shoreline, facing probably their toughest opponent in King’s Junior High.

The scrappy public school Wolves held their own, winning one of three games to kick off a season in which they will play four of their first five games on the road.

That lone home clash comes right away, as CMS hosts Northshore Academy Thursday, with tip-off at 3:15 PM.

After that, the Wolves don’t play a game in their own gym again until Dec. 4, though they do get to close with four of five in Cow Town.

How Wednesday’s season openers played out:

 

Level 1:

Coupeville lost hot-shooting Logan Downes to an early ankle injury, but it was a cold third quarter which derailed the Wolves.

Trailing by just three at the half, CMS came up on the short end of a 10-2 run after the break, eventually falling 42-27.

Cole White did what he could to keep the Wolves in the game, banging away from outside for a team-high 12 points, including a pair of deep three-balls.

Zane Oldenstadt, William Davidson, and Downes chipped in with four apiece, while Nick Guay tickled the twines on a trey to round out the scoring.

Rounding out the Wolves to see action were Landon Roberts, Ryan Blouin, and Hunter Bronec.

Down 14-9 after one quarter of action, CMS rallied in the second frame thanks to White, who knocked down five of his 12 points during a 7-5 mini-surge.

 

Level 2:

After a tense first quarter which saw the Wolves clinging to just a 3-0 lead, Coupeville put the hammer down and rolled to a resounding 29-2 victory.

“Team two played with tons of energy and hustle – it was fun to see,” said CMS coach Greg White.

A 12-2 surge in the second quarter, with Hunter Bronec, Nathan Ginnings, and Timothy Nitta having the hot hands, put the game on ice, then the Wolves closed with 7-0 runs in both the third and fourth.

Nitta, Ginnings, Hunter Bronec, and Johnny Porter each singed the nets for a team-best six points, while Hurlee Bronec (4), and Mikey Robinett (1) rounded out the offensive attack.

Jack Porter and Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim also saw floor time.

 

Level 3:

The basket was unforgiving for Coupeville, which went down 24-2.

The lone bucket came from Justin Jansen, while Jordan Bradford, Carson Fields, Jesus Madrigal, Alex Clark, Harlan Mouw, and Chris Villarreal also saw floor time for the Wolves.

One week left to decide fate of soccer universe

The status quo holds.

Three games, three shutouts Thursday left the North Sound Conference girls soccer standings basically unchanged.

Coupeville fell 5-0 at Cedar Park Christian, while King’s bounced Granite Falls 4-0 and South Whidbey eased past Sultan 2-0.

With six days, and two games per team, left in the regular season, South Whidbey (8-0, 12-0-1) and King’s (7-1, 10-4) are headed towards an Oct. 23 showdown in Shoreline.

With the win Thursday, Cedar Park (4-4, 7-5) eased a game ahead of Granite (3-5, 6-7), while Coupeville (1-7, 1-10-2) and Sultan (1-11-2) remain tied for the league’s fifth, and final playoff spot.

The Wolves travel to South Whidbey Oct. 21, then host Granite Falls Oct. 23, while Sultan hosts King’s, then travels to CPC the same days.

If CHS and the Turks remain knotted, having split their regular season match-ups by 1-0 scores, the two teams meet Oct. 24 in Coupeville to play a tiebreaker to decide who’s playoff-bound and who’s banquet-bound.

Thursday night, the Wolves were buffeted by Cedar Park’s shooters, but also the weather.

“It was a rather windy and wet game,” Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson remarked.

The two schools started the night with a JV game which was regarded as a “friendly” since CPC borrowed the Wolves a few players to make even sides.

While no final score was registered, Coupeville’s Lily Leedy did score a hat trick, rattling home three goals for the Wolves.

A million little spikes

Three matches, three very different outcomes.

The Coupeville Middle School volleyball squads hit the highway Wednesday, headed up to the wilds of Everett to face off with swanky Northshore Christian Academy.

Once there, the Wolves came within a set of winning two of the three bouts, before eventually taking a loss in each rumble.

How the day played out:

 

Level 1:

Coupeville’s top aces fell 25-14, 25-13 in the first two sets, then rallied to take the third frame 15-9.

The loss drops the Wolves to 1-7 on the season, with matches against South Whidbey (Oct. 21 at home) and Lakewood (Oct. 24 on the road) left on the schedule.

Mia Farris had the hot hand for CMS, picking up 10 points off of her serve, while Chloe Marzocca netted eight, and the tandem of Lyla Stuurmans and Grey Peabody recorded six apiece.

Rounding out the attack were Taylor Brotemarkle, Olivia Schaffeld, and Katie Marti, who each tossed four points onto the score sheet.

 

Level 2:

The day’s closest match, with CMS taking the opening set 25-21, NSA rebounding to edge the Wolves 25-22 in the second frame, and then the hosts taking the match with a 15-9 third set.

The razor-thin loss drops Coupeville’s most-successful team to 5-3 on the season.

Three Wolves were especially effective with the volleyball in their hands, as Brionna Blouin (14 points), Jada Heaton (12), and Madison McMillan (11) topped Wolf servers.

Also scoring for CMS were Ava Mitten (5), Allison Nastali (4), Issabel Johnson (3), Laila Wenzel (3), Aby Wood (2), and Skylar Parker (2).

 

Level 3:

Coupeville lost all three sets, but narrowed the margin in each, eventually falling 25-11, 25-14, 15-10.

The young Wolves are 1-7 on the season.

Hayley Thomas topped the points charts, rolling up eight, while Maryah Love and Bryley Gilbert amassed six apiece.

Jackie Contreras (4), Jones Walther (4), Kaylee Clark (2), Kassidy Upchurch (2), Bailey Thule (2), and Gabriella Becktell (1) rounded out the Wolf scoring.

Booters head home to fight for playoff lives

Something had to give.

Two win-less girls soccer teams that have struggled to score this season clashed Thursday in Port Townsend, but only one came away happy.

Unfortunately for Coupeville players and fans, it was the host RedHawks who survived a rough-and-tumble affair to escape with a 2-0 win.

The non-conference loss drops the Wolves to 0-9-2 on the season, while Port Townsend improves to 1-8.

Coupeville, which is still in contention for one of the five playoff spots awarded in the six-team North Sound Conference, face its biggest game of the season early next week.

The Wolves, who are 0-6 in league play, host Sultan (1-5, 1-8-2) Tuesday night in a 6 PM game.

A win would allow CHS to move up into a tie with the Turks for the league’s final playoff berth, while a loss would all but eliminate them.

If Coupeville and the Turks are tied at the end of the season, they would meet in Sultan Oct. 24 for a tie-breaker game.

The #5 seed from the North Sound Conference opens postseason play Oct. 26 at home, hosting the #4 seed from the Northwest Conference (currently Mount Baker, which is 0-12) in a loser-out game.

With Coupeville’s final three regular-season games against Cedar Park Christian (3-3, 6-4), South Whidbey (6-0, 10-0-1), and Granite Falls (3-3, 6-5), making up a two-game deficit would be a hard task.

The Wolves have struggled with injuries to key players all year.

Leading scorer Genna Wright went down in the season opener, and never returned, while starters Mollie Bailey, Natalie Hollrigel, Mallory Kortuem and more have missed games.

CMS booters net landmark win

Every day a new milestone.

A game after scoring the first goals in program history, the Coupeville Middle School boys soccer squad went one better Monday afternoon.

Sparked by a lock-down defense, the Wolf booters nipped host Granite Falls 1-0, recording their first-ever win.

Now 1-2 in its debut season, Coupeville got the only goal it needed thanks to a wham-bam play and a little luck.

Logan Downes rifled a corner kick towards the goal early in the second half, and the ball landed exactly where it needed to be – on Andrew Williams thigh.

Ricocheting past the Granite goalie, the orb found the back of the net, and the Wolf celebration was on.

“Great team work,” said CMS coach Reese Cernick. “They played very well together. Good passing, good rhythm, good control.”

With just a 1-0 lead, the win was in doubt until the final moments, but that’s where Coupeville’s defense rose to the moment.

Wolf goaltender William Davidson, AKA “Mr. Freeze,” was a beast in the net, knocking down shots and refusing to let Granite get even a sniff of a goal.

His defenders came up big, as well, with Preston Epp deflecting what could have been the tying goal late in stoppage time.

Granite Falls got one truly final shot at an equalizer with about 10 seconds to play, but the Wolves stacked their own box and successfully fended off a desperation corner kick.

As a bus full of madly-celebrating Wolves tore through the back streets of Granite Falls, their coach relaxed and enjoyed the landmark win.

“Everyone pulled their weight today,” Cernick said. “I am very proud of them.”
