Lhamon runs to success!!

Catherine Lhamon is on the attack.

Running in just her second high school cross country meet Saturday, the Coupeville sophomore sparkled at the epic 36-team Sehome Invitational.

With so many teams in attendance, the event broke its races down by classes, and yet almost every one of the eight varsity heats featured 100 or more runners.

Lhamon came pounding down the back stretch, picking off 10 runners over the final mile of her two-mile race to claim 15th out of 121 runners.

The speedy Wolf hit the tape in 13 minutes, 59.95 seconds.

The massive meet drew in teams from every classification in Washington state, with all three Whidbey Island schools making the trip.

They make it rain goals!!

They’re scoring at a record-setting pace.

With 39 goals through 10 games, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad is on target to put up its best offensive numbers in at least a decade.

Having peppered goalies for five more scores since last time we discussed the subject, the current Wolves have tied the 2010 team, and are just nine back of the high-powered ’16 squad.

The numbers for the nine CHS seasons the Olympic League web site has recorded:

2010 – 39 goals
2011 – 30
2012 – 27
2013 – 15
2014 – 22
2015 – 37
2016 – 48
2017 – 26
2018 – 39 and counting

Coupeville (3-1 in Olympic League play, 4-4-2 overall) has five conference games left, and then likely heads to the playoffs.

If the Wolves maintain their current scoring pace, they would obliterate the mark set by the ’16 team.

But, of course, you have to play the games first, and the schedule ahead is a bit tricky.

Two of those regular-season matches are against Klahowya, which has surrendered just six goals this season, none against 1A Olympic League foes.

But, one of those tilts comes against Chimacum, a team that has been shredded for 62 goals in six games.

So, it may balance itself out.

Breeze blows in snappy pics!!

“Ha ha, death from above … and … oh crud, my wings are frozen again!!”

   Joey Lippo digs the longball, even if the steady breeze wasn’t super-conducive to the round trippers on this day.

   All eyes are on the field, except for one lil’ girl intent on figuring out how to break out of her restraints.

It was prime picture-taking weather.

While the sun was out Friday, there was a nasty lil’ prairie breeze assaulting everyone who stood still too long.

In an effort to keep warm, travelin’ camera clicker John Fisken bounced between the baseball field, and the more-sheltered soccer pitch.

Road warriors retire running shoes!!

They started on the road and finished on the road.

With no active cross country program at their own school, three Coupeville High School harriers struck a deal with their Island rivals.

Wolves Henry Wynn, Danny Conlisk and Sam Wynn trained and traveled with South Whidbey (while wearing CHS uniforms), then split off on their own for the postseason.

Once there Conlisk ran all the way to the state meet, becoming the first Wolf to make it to the big dance since Tyler King won the 1A boys title in 2010.

Now, the trio have officially capped their season, receiving letters alongside their Falcon “teammates” at a season-ending shindig.

Henry Wynn was the lone senior for the Wolves, with Conlisk, a junior, and Sam Wynn, a freshman, expected to return to running next fall.

That may be at Coupeville, as there are rumors of the Wolves restarting their dormant program, which has a long and distinguished history.

If not, they’ll likely head back down the trail to Langley and reunite with the Falcons.

The gang’s all here!!

   You had one job! At least three school names are misspelled on the shirt given out Saturday at the Bellevue Cross Country Invitational. Of course, Coupeville is one… (Dawnelle Conlisk photos)

   Together, in uniform and in action, for the first time — Danny Conlisk (469), Henry Wynn (470) and Sam Wynn.

Team work!

For the first time this season all three Coupeville High School cross country runners were in uniform and on the course on the same day.

The Wolves, who travel and train with South Whidbey while they wait for CHS to revive its own storied program, ran Saturday at the 56-team Bellevue Cross Country Invitational at Lake Sammamish State Park.

Danny Conlisk, back in action after missing a meet due to illness, tore up the course, cruising through 5,000 meters in 17 minutes, 48.3 seconds, to finish 40th out of 74 runners in his flight.

That’s not only a PR for the Wolf junior, but a huge time drop, as he shaved 48 seconds off his previous best performance.

Running in the same race, CHS senior Henry Wynn finished 63rd in 19:00.

Rounding out the Wolf competitors was freshman Sam Wynn, who made his high school cross country debut.

The lil’ brother rambled home in 21:14.

The Invitational featured 13 different races, seven for boys and six for girls.

Coupeville’s trio really hit the road for their next event, traveling to Missoula, Montana for the 80-team Mountain West Classic Saturday, Sept. 30.
