CMS girls hoops alters season

Middle school girls basketball is on the move.

The new season was slated to begin this coming Monday, Jan. 24, but, with the crush of Covid-testing athletes three times a week, the Cascade League has bumped things back.

Now, Coupeville and its league mates begin practice Feb. 14, with the season running during the month of March.

The updated schedule for CMS:

Thurs-Mar. 3 — South Whidbey
Tues-Mar. 8 — @Northshore Christian
Thurs-Mar. 10 — @Sultan
Tues-Mar. 15 — @Granite Falls
Thurs-Mar. 17 — King’s
Tues-Mar. 22 — Lakewood
Tues-Mar. 29 — Sultan
Thur-Mar. 31 — @South Whidbey

All home games tip at 3:15 PM, with road contests slated for 3:30 starts.

Covid postpones CHS girls basketball games

Two down, two play on.

At least that’s the plan at the moment.

A new positive Covid test inside the program will sideline the Coupeville High School girls basketball teams Thursday, with their home games against Friday Harbor moved to Jan. 17.

The Wolf boys are still scheduled to play, however, and the change means its JV team will get to play in the high school gym, instead of on the middle school court.

Game times Thursday are 4:00 PM for JV, and 5:30 for varsity.

Winter weather erases hoops games

“Well, if it’s not Covid, it’s something else!”

The steady buzzing sound you hear this winter is the sound of Coupeville High School Athletic Director Willie Smith’s phone, as the basketball schedule changes nearly every hour.

The latest upheaval doesn’t involve the pandemic but will still cost the Wolf hoops squads a game.

Former league rival Sultan, who Coupeville was scheduled to play next Saturday, Jan. 15, is still fighting through the aftereffects of the recent snow/ice storms and is starting to hit crunch time.

“They are getting backed up in their league games, and, like us, their league games take precedence over their non-league games,” Smith said.

So, off the schedule goes what would have been a road trip for the Coupeville boys, and home games for the Wolf girls.

CHS hoops teams flip schedule

Coupeville High School basketball fans will have an extra chance to watch their teams play in person this week.

The Wolves, who were already set to host La Conner Tuesday and Orcas Island Saturday, are adding home tilts with Friday Harbor on Thursday.

Water issues related to frozen pipes on Friday Harbor are the reason for the change.

With Thursday’s games now at home (4:00 for varsity girls and JV boys, 5:30 for boys varsity/girls JV), Coupeville will travel to Friday Harbor Feb. 4 for the second meeting of the season.

That throws off Senior Night for both CHS teams, as the original plan called for that event to happen on that night.

Replacement date(s) for the festivities will be announced once CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith’s cell phone stops buzzing.

With the Friday Harbor flip, the Coupeville boys get to open the new year with four-straight home games, but are also scheduled to play their final six, and eight of their last nine, on the road.

The Wolf girls get five straight, and seven of their next eight at home, with their final four away from Whidbey.

Though, the schedule will likely still change more, as both CHS programs had games postponed at the end of 2021.

The Coupeville boys had a league contest at Mount Vernon Christian and a non-conference home tussle with South Whidbey pushed due to Covid protocols, while the Wolf girls called off their trip to Langley to play the Falcons.

 

UPDATE (1:30 PM – Tuesday):

Orcas basketball has a “Covid situation,” so Saturday’s games are postponed, and will be rescheduled.

 

UPDATE (1:50 PM – Tuesday):

Postponed Coupeville vs. South Whidbey hoops games from end of ’21 won’t be rescheduled, as first priority is to reschedule league games being thrown around by Covid/weather.

Jan. 22 games against SW (girls home, boys away) still on — next door neighbors just won’t play twice this year.

CHS football adds home game

Reach for the heavens, and prepare for impact.

Coupeville High School has filled an open date on its football schedule, adding a home game against 1A power Meridian Saturday, Oct. 9.

The game will kickoff at 7 PM, and be part of a two-sport doubleheader at Mickey Clark Field.

That’s because the Wolf boys soccer squad also hosts Providence Classical Christian at 3 PM that day.

Meridian’s football team was slated to play league rival Lynden Christian Oct. 8, but the Lyncs cancelled the game because of Covid issues.

The Bellingham Herald reported Wednesday that Lynden Christian, which houses preschool though 12th grade on its campus, is moving all grades to remote learning after a recent surge in cases.

The addition of the game gets Coupeville back to an eight-game regular season schedule after its contest with East Jefferson earlier this season was KO’d by a wind storm which shut down the ferry system.

The Wolves, 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-2 overall, play at Friday Harbor Oct. 1, then get a week to prepare for Meridian, which is currently 3-1 heading into a clash with Nooksack Valley.

The Trojans opened the season with a 54-8 loss to Burlington-Edison, but have rebounded to beat Evergreen 55-6, Grandview 34-15, and Bellingham 26-14.

Meridian boasts a proud football tradition, having played in six state championship games, winning titles in 1999, 2003, and 2006 under legendary former coach Bob Ames.
