Wolves (l to r) Taylor Brotemarkle, Savina Wells, Jada Heaton (behind Wells), and Lyla Stuurmans are ready to scrap.

Their turn is coming.

With Coupeville Middle School boys basketball having wrapped its season, the court will soon belong to the Wolf girls.

Well, soon may be a bit of a stretch, as there’s a fairly decent gap between seasons.

But, it will happen, with practices kicking off in January and the first games set for February 6 at home in the CMS gym.

Just like with the boys, the girls will be divided into three teams this season, with 7th and 8th graders mixed depending on hoops skills.

Alex Evans, who led the CMS 8th graders to an undefeated season a year ago, back before the new three-team format was instituted, returns to coach.

He’ll be joined by at least one other, yet-to-be-identified coach.

As you mentally prepare for spending five hours (give or take an hour…) camped on the rock-hard middle school bleachers each time the Wolves play at home, a look at the schedule as it sits today:

Thur-Feb. 6 — Northshore Christian Academy (3:15)
Mon-Feb. 10 — @Granite Falls (3:15)
Wed-Feb. 12 — King’s (3:15)
Wed-Feb. 19 — @Sultan (3:30)
Thur-Feb. 20 — @South Whidbey (3:30)
Wed-Feb. 26 — Lakewood (3:15)
Mon-Mar. 2 — Granite Falls (3:15)
Wed-Mar. 4 — @Northshore Christian Academy (3:15)
Mon-Mar. 9 — South Whidbey (3:15)
Thur-Mar. 12 — @Lakewood (3:15)

The numbers are there.

Beating the odds, Coupeville High School, one of the smallest 1A schools in the state, will go three teams deep in boys basketball this season.

With 33 players on their roster, the Wolves will field a C-Team, joining the CHS volleyball program in being able to support a trio of squads.

Once he knew for sure, Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith quickly pulled together a schedule, and is in the process of hiring a coach to join Brad Sherman (varsity) and Chris Smith (JV).

Scott Fox led the C-Team last season, but he’s now in charge of the Wolf girls basketball program.

While Coupeville’s varsity and JV will play 19-game regular season schedules, the C-Team has 12 tilts ahead of it.

Three of those, including home match-ups with Squalicum and Mount Vernon, will put the young Wolves on center stage as the only game being played that night.

The other nine times out, all against North Sound Conference foes, the C-Team will play at the same time as Coupeville’s JV.

The C-Team sked:

Thur-Dec. 12 — Squalicum (6:00)
Tues-Dec. 17 — @Mount Vernon (4:30)
Tues-Jan. 7 — @Granite Falls (3:00)
Wed-Jan. 8 — Mount Vernon (5:00)
Fri-Jan. 10 — Sultan (3:30)
Tues-Jan. 14 — Cedar Park Christian (5:00)
Fri-Jan. 17 — @South Whidbey (5:00)
Tues-Jan. 21 — @King’s (5:00)
Fri-Jan. 24 — @Cedar Park Christian (3:30)
Tues-Jan. 28 — South Whidbey (5:00)
Fri-Jan. 31 — Granite Falls (3:30)
Tues-Feb. 4 — @Sultan (3:30)

Hawthorne Wolfe led the Wolf boys in scoring last year as a freshman.

The countdown to hard-court mania begins.

The Coupeville High School basketball teams take the floor for the first day of practice Monday, Nov. 18, with the season-opening games two weeks later.

Both the Wolf girls and boys are currently scheduled to play more than 50% of their regular season games away from Cow Town, with the girls taking a bigger hit.

Playing for new coaches Scott Fox and Megan Smith, who replace the retired David and Amy King, the CHS girls get just seven of 18 games on their home floor.

Meanwhile, the Wolf boys, who will operate under returning coaches Brad Sherman and Chris Smith, get nine of 19 at their place.

Doubleheaders will play a large role, as there are 11 scheduled – five at home, six on the road.

And last, but not least, there’s a weird quirk to the league schedule.

King’s, which has two teams intent on playing for state titles, approached the other five North Sound Conference schools and proposed playing just one league game with each, instead of the normal two.

That would allow the Knights to stuff their schedule with large-school rivals such as Rainier Beach and Tumwater, which, in theory would better prepare King’s for the postseason run.

On the girls side, all five schools accepted, leaving King’s to play just five league games, while everyone else will compete in nine.

Two schools on the boys side – South Whidbey and Cedar Park Christian – declined, however, and will still play home-and-away with the Knights.

So, that leaves Coupeville, Sultan, and Granite Falls with nine league games, King’s with seven, and the South Whidbey and Cedar Park boys as the only teams with the full 10 contests.

The change affects only basketball.

With that said, here’s an up to the moment look at CHS varsity basketball schedules.

Coupeville Middle School hoops star Ryan Blouin and friends return to the gym in two weeks. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

We’re kind of getting ahead of ourselves, but just barely.

While fall sports are still chugging along, with plenty of games left to play, we’re also just two weeks away from the start of Coupeville Middle School boys basketball.

CMS soccer and cross country wrap up Oct. 23, then, bam, five days later, the Wolf boys head to the gym, with the first practice set for Oct. 28.

Games begin Nov. 13, with the 10-game season running about five weeks, then there’s an almost two-month gap before the CMS girls get their crack at basketball.

When games start, the CMS boys play four of their first five away from Whidbey, but also get a three-game home-stand to close the season.

Also, following a new wrinkle which debuted during volleyball, the hoops teams won’t be divided into 7th and 8th grade teams, but will instead feature three squads, referred to as Level 1, 2, and 3.

The teams will play in a different order almost every time out, just to keep people guessing.

The Wolves will be coached by returning hoops guru Greg White and CMS newcomers Jon Roberts and Craig Anderson.

The schedule:

Wed-Nov. 13 — @King’s (3:15)
Thur-Nov. 14 — Northshore Christian Academy (3:15)
Mon-Nov. 18 — @Granite Falls (3:15)
Tues-Nov. 26 — @Sultan (3:30)
Mon-Dec. 2 — @Lakewood (3:15)
Wed-Dec. 4 — King’s (3:15)
Mon-Dec. 9 — @Northshore Christian Academy (3:30)
Wed-Dec. 11 — Sultan (3:15)
Mon-Dec. 16 — South Whidbey (3:15)
Thur-Dec. 19 — Granite Falls (3:15)

Thanks to a strong turnout, Coupeville High School girls soccer coach Kyle Nelson will have both a varsity and JV this fall. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

If you wanted more soccer, you’re in luck.

The turnout for Coupeville High School’s girls program was strong enough that the Wolves will have a full-time JV squad this fall.

It’s the first time in many years the CHS female booters have been able to field two teams.

That’s a huge boon for the program, as it allows the Wolves to get substantial playing time for everyone on the roster, something which wasn’t always possible the past season or two.

While Coupeville’s varsity has a 15-game schedule, the JV is set to take the pitch 10 times.

The second squad gets home and away games with four of the five other schools in the North Sound Conference, with Granite Falls the only league school not fielding a JV team.

CHS also gets JV games against non-conference foes Port Townsend and Friday Harbor, though the length of both of those road rumbles may be affected by the need to catch certain ferries.

The JV girls soccer schedule:

Thur-Sept. 12 — @Friday Harbor (after varsity)
Tues-Sept. 17 — @King’s (4:00)
Thur-Sept. 19 — @Sultan (5:00)
Tues-Sept. 24 — Cedar Park Christian (4:00)
Tues-Oct. 1 — South Whidbey (4:00)
Tues-Oct. 8 — King’s (4:00)
Thur-Oct. 10 — @Port Townsend (after varsity)
Tues-Oct. 15 — Sultan (4:00)
Thur-Oct. 17 — @Cedar Park Christian (4:00)
Mon-Oct. 21 — @South Whidbey (4:00)
