The many talents of Claire Mietus. (John Fisken and Cheridan Eck photos)

A few of the many talents of Claire Mietus. (John Fisken and Cheridan Eck photos)

Claire Mietus will take over the world some day.

The Coupeville High School junior, who celebrates a birthday today, hops from one activity to another and excels at all of them.

A fixture on the Wolf sports scene — where she helps anchor the cheer squad through football and basketball seasons — Mietus is lucky she can find time to pick up her pom poms.

She’s also (deep breath) the president of the Leo’s Club, a service organization, plays in the school’s jazz band, is an ASB officer for the Class of 2018 and competes in Science Olympiad.

Claire is a brilliant young woman, outgoing, friendly and deeply caring to those around her, someone who exudes a serene, inquisitive spirit.

It should come as little surprise that she aspires to be a world-changer, with plans to be a cardiovascular surgeon and work with Doctors Without Borders.

I have no doubt she’s well on her way to doing amazing things.

There are some people who you need to merely observe from a distance and you can tell they are destined for greatness, and Miss Mietus has always seemed to have that something extra.

As she celebrates her cake day, we, the fans, want to take a moment to wish her all the best and also to sing her praises for what she’s accomplished already (and everything still to come).

Happy birthday, Claire.

Go into each new moment knowing how much others think of you, and how much they respect your drive and compassion.

You’re a superstar, a bright, shining one, and it’s for all the right reasons.

Keep on amazing us, every day.

Carroll, trying to contain the excitement of advancing to state.

Carroll, trying to contain the excitement of advancing to state.

Great things are ahead for Mitchell Carroll.

As he heads into his senior year at Coupeville High School, the two-sport (football, track) star seems primed to have a breakout year.

Always among the hardest workers in a Wolf uniform, Carroll, who celebrates a birthday today, brings dedication, talent and commitment to the table every day.

At a time when others are taking the easy way out, he remains front and center for Coupeville, proud of his school and his own talents and ready to put a cap on his career where it started.

Carroll is one of the top Wolf defensive players slated to return to the gridiron as new CHS coach John Atkins kicks off his first year.

He snagged 29 tackles last year, while also picking up a sack and a fumble recovery.

Part of a group of tackle-happy returning Wolves with Chris Battaglia, Uriel Liquidano, Julian Welling and Jacob Martin, Carroll should send his numbers even higher as a senior.

Then, when spring rolls around, and CHS debuts its new track and field layout, local fans will get to see him compete at home for the first time.

As a junior, Carroll threw the shot put and flew in all three jumping events (high, long and triple), making it all the way to state in the final event.

We can praise his work ethic. His commitment to his teammates and school. His big brain (he’s an Honor Roll alumni who competes in Science Olympiad).

Keep on going and we’ll be here all day.

So, let’s wrap this up and let him get to the cake by simply saying this — Mitchell Carroll is one of the best and brightest, in every way, that we are blessed to have here in Wolf Nation.

Guy is a winner, on and off the field, and, from all of us up in the cheap seats, happy birthday.

Lilan Sekigawa nails another winner on the court. (John Fisken photo)

Lilan Sekigawa nails another winner on the court. (John Fisken photo)

He’s one of the true leaders of the pack.

Coupeville High School senior Lilan Sekigawa, who celebrates a birthday today, is a man for all seasons.

On the tennis court, he’s been one of the best Wolf players in recent years, excelling as a doubles ace while also injecting a sly sense of humor into the behind-the-scenes back-and-forth common among netters.

Even on the gloomiest fall day, when one wonders why on Earth they would schedule a tennis match, Sekigawa’s smile lights up the court.

This past season I was at every home match for the Wolf boys (amazing what you can do when you don’t have a “real” job…) and Lilan stood out.

No one else seemed to enjoy their time on the court as much as he did, bouncing around, playfully whacking doubles partner Jimmy Myers with his racket, or quietly cracking jokes.

Off the court, though, he is just as much of a star, a key member of the school’s Science Olympiad squad and a member of the National Honor Society.

As he heads towards graduation, we just want to take a moment to wish him the best.

Today, on his cake day, and every day, as he represents Coupeville with style and class.

Happy birthday, Lilan!
