There’s usually two ways to look at things.

There is no doubt scoring is down for the Coupeville High School girls soccer squad this season.

After stringing together three consecutive years of 30+ goals as a team, topping out with a 47-goal explosion in 2016, the current Wolves seem unlikely to reach those heights.

The 2018 squad has tallied 15 scores through its first 11 games.

With just four regular-season games left on the schedule, plus (hopefully) a postseason appearance, the Wolves would have to radically ramp up their scoring to keep the streak alive.

But, the first of those four games comes Tuesday at Sultan, against a Turks team Coupeville ravaged for six goals the first time around.

And, tack on just four more scores before the season is over and done, and the current team will still have the fourth-best showing of any Wolf squad from the last decade.

How CHS girls soccer teams have scored in the past 10 seasons:

2018 — 15 and counting
2017 — 43
2016 — 37
2015 — 33
2014 — 18
2013 — 11
2012 — 8
2011 — 6
2010 — 16
2009 — 15

And here’s who has hit the back of the net during the 2018 season:

Genna Wright — 5
Lindsey Roberts
— 4
Mallory Kortuem
— 2
Avalon Renninger
— 2
Anna Dion
— 1

One week to seal their fates.

The high school basketball campaign, at least the regular season part, is nearing an end.

Three games in five days next week, and then it’s on to the postseason for some, but not all.

Coupeville’s girls are playoff-bound again, but the final games will tell the tale of whether they enter as a #1, #2 or #3 seed.

A loss Friday to Port Townsend made the run at a fourth-straight league crown exceedingly difficult, but it’s not impossible.

The RedHawks can make things even harder with a win over Chimacum Tuesday, but, if the Cowboys prevail, then things go all kaflooey for another couple of days.

Coupeville has a non-league match-up at Sequim Tuesday, then faces its fate with games at Klahowya Thursday and home against Chimacum Saturday.

If everything comes down to that final day, the Wolves will be sending good thoughts to Amber Bumbalough and the Eagles as they try and knock off Port Townsend in their finale.

However it all works out, the Wolf girls, as we said, are playoff-bound.

The same can’t be said for the CHS boys, unfortunately, as the Wolves were eliminated from playoff contention by a loss Friday at Port Townsend.

While three girls squads punch postseason tickets, only two boys teams get to make the trip this year.

Biggest game of the year?

Biggest game of the year.

Both Coupeville High School varsity basketball teams face a major test next Friday, Jan. 26, with one Wolf team vying for a league title and the other fighting for its playoff life.

With finals going down next week at CHS, the Wolf athletic schedule is light, with just the one game.

After that, both squads cap the regular season the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 3 with three games in six days.

Friday’s bouts are the main attraction, though.

The Coupeville girls, who have overcome injuries and defections, are jelling and have won four of six heading into a home game against Port Townsend where the winner will have sole possession of first-place in the Olympic League.

For the Wolf boys, Friday is a tricky affair, as they both travel to face the RedHawks and have to win to keep their postseason dreams alive.

While girls basketball sends three teams to the playoffs this season, only two boys squads will punch a ticket in 2018.

Ema Smith (top) and Lindsey Roberts helped Coupeville topple Klahowya Saturday in a big Olympic League tussle.

It was a weird week.

Back in action after returning from winter break, the Coupeville High School basketball teams found mixed results.

The Wolf girls started with a poor performance at North Mason, but rebounded with a vengeance to grab a huge league win over Klahowya.

Despite playing without its top scorer, Coupeville evened its conference mark and pulled back within a game of Port Townsend as it seeks a fourth-straight league crown.

On the other side of the ball, the Wolf boys lost a heart breaker in overtime to North Mason, then never got to tip off with Klahowya.

A snafu left the two teams without refs, and the game will have to be rescheduled.

Still, thanks to a better winning percentage, Coupeville remains atop the boys standings, though that will be tested next week.

Games against Port Townsend and Chimacum will go a long way towards determining who’s the team to beat as the heart of the league schedule arrives.

Everything is a little topsy-turvy at the moment.

Only a smidge of the conference season has been played, yet things look totally different than in years past.

A new-look Coupeville High School girls basketball squad dropped its Olympic League opener to Port Townsend, ending a three-year, 27-game winning streak against conference foes.

While there are still miles (and eight conference games) to go, the Wolves find themselves looking up at other teams for the first time since joining the four-team league in 2014.

On the other side of the ball, the CHS boys are tasting rarefied air.

After rallying from 12 points down in the fourth quarter to stun defending league champ Port Townsend in overtime, the Wolves sit atop the standings.

There’s still a lot to be played in that race, as well, but, for the moment, the view from the penthouse is a sweet one.

Both Coupeville teams have a stretch of non-league contests ahead of them, and don’t face off with another conference rival until Jan. 6.

Then, they close with eight of their final 10 games inside the Olympic League, the time period when playoff dreams will truly live and die.

Until then, take a gander at varsity scoring stats and league standings through Dec. 17:
