Ben Smith

He’s back racking up stats.

Coupeville grad Ben Smith made his season debut for the Lakeland University football team Saturday, recording three tackles and a sack as the Muskies crunched Rockford 35-7 in Plymouth, Wisconsin.

The victory lifts Lakeland to 1-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play, 1-2 overall.

The Muskies have a 10-game regular season schedule which stretches through mid-November.

Smith, an All-Conference pick at running back during his days as a Wolf, is in his first season at Lakeland, where he’s a linebacker.

A graduate transfer, he previously played ball at Concordia Chicago and Eureka College, after redshirting at Culver-Stockton College.

His degree from Concordia is in criminal justice, and Smith is working towards a master’s at Lakeland in leadership and organizational development.

Middle school track and field season is upon us. (Leslie Stoner photos)

Tamsin Ward is back, and so are the wins.

The Coupeville 8th grader kicked off her third, and final, season of middle school track and field Wednesday by doing exactly what she’s done for two years running.

Whomp on people.

Ward, who earned 23 wins across her first two CMS seasons, captured wins in the 100, shot put, and high jump while competing against Northshore Christian Academy and Sultan in her home stadium.

And she wasn’t the only Wolf to have an excellent day, with Diesel Eck and Elizabeth Marshall also claiming parts of three victories.

The former won the shot put and discus while running a leg on a 4 x 100 relay team, while the latter claimed top honors in the 100 hurdles and long jump, then pulled duty on a triumphant 4 x 200 squad.

River Simpson and Cyrus Sparacio were two-time winners, with Coupeville holding its own in the team standings as well.

The Wolf 8th grade girls and boy’s 6th/7th squad captured team titles.

“Our first meet of the season was a great adventure!” said CMS coach Jon Gabelein.

“While some students were more nervous than others about stepping into their first meet of the season, they all showed up ready to work hard and show good sportsmanship at the same time!

“Now that they have their baseline numbers, their continued practice and pushing themselves even more will allow them to generate even stronger results during the coming weeks!”

Ready to rumble.

The building process begins.

While the Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball teams lost their opening games at South Whidbey Wednesday, Wolf coaches Brooke Crowder and Makana Stone came away pleased with a lot of what they saw.

“We had some really good hustle and effort – a great baseline for us to work forwards from,” Stone said.

South Whidbey came into the tip-off games with a lot more experience and floor time among their assembled players, and it showed at times. But that is something CMS can improve on.

“We forced our offense on both teams and struggled to stick to our defensive principles,” Stone said. “Of course, some of that can be chalked up to first game jitters, some of it to being a new team finding our footing.

“After the games, the team is ready and eager to dial into upcoming practices!”

Coupeville’s Level 1 team was limited to just six points, with Kaleigha Millison banking in five, while Kennedy O’Neill netted a free throw.

Cameron Van Dyke, Elizabeth Marshall, Aubrey Flowers, Sophia Batterman, Cassandra Powers, Emma Cushman, Zayne Roos, and Allison Powers also saw floor time for the Wolves.

The Level 2 squad made the nets jump at a much better rate, with six different players recording points.

Annaliese Powers knocked down six to pace her squad, with Finley Helm (4), Hazel Goldman (4), Savannah Coxsey (2), Sabrina Judnich (2), and Emma Green (1) keeping the scorekeeper’s pen busy.

Claire Lachnit, Addison Jacobson, Selah Rivera, and KeeAyra Brown rounded out the roster, while Coupeville’s #3 team had the day off as South Whidbey only fields two teams.

After opening on the road, Coupeville is at home for most of the rest of the month.

The Wolves host Sultan (Feb. 17), Granite Falls (Feb. 19), and Northshore Christian Academy (Feb. 25) before heading off-Island again.

As Coupeville goes forward, Crowder and Stone will continue to focus on growth and improvement.

“We will be a hardworking team this season – building a strong team culture, step by step,” Stone said.

“We’re excited to keep building and to fully embrace the way of the WolfPack!”

Wolf 8th grader Ari Cunningham won the long jump Wednesday. (Jackie Saia photo)

Tamsin Ward is right back at it.

A year after winning 11 events during her debut middle school track and field season, the now 7th grader got off to a strong start Wednesday, claiming three more titles during the season opener.

Overall, Coupeville earned 20 wins (and approximately 1,002 PRs) as it faced off with visiting Lakewood.

Ward, whose 11 wins were the most for a CMS girl since Lindsey Roberts won 18 during her 8th grade season in 2015, came out on top in the 100, shot put, and high jump on an overcast prairie afternoon.

She was joined as a three-time winner by 6th grader River Simpson, who came out of the gate strongly with victories in the 100, 4 x 100 relay, and long jump.

Coupeville’s 7th grade girls crew appears deep and talented, as Hyley Farrell (4 x 1 and 4 x 2) and Elizabeth Marshall (100 Hurdles, 4 x 2) also won multiple titles.

CMS coaches Amber Wyman and Jon Gabelein have an astonishing 77 athletes out for track, as Cow Town’s numbers are booming.

“Our first track meet of the year was definitely a big adventure,” Gabelein said.

“Our athletes set great personal baseline marks that they can now begin to work hard to improve throughout the season. All of the positive attitudes and good sportsmanship made a big difference.

The Wolves return to competition next Wednesday, May 1, when they travel to Granite Falls.

Ari Cunningham clamps down on defense. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Some things are clicking. Some things need to be worked on.

The Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball teams made their debut Thursday, squaring off with next-door neighbor South Whidbey.

While the Falcons escaped with narrow wins in all three contests, the host Wolves made fourth quarter rallies each time out and shared the scoring load.

But what killed comeback hopes was an unforgiving rim on free throw attempts, as the CMS squads combined to net just 4-29 from the charity stripe.

Still, even there, the positive was the Wolves showed a far superior ability to get to the line in the first place, with South Whidbey going just 2-8 overall.

How the day played out:

Level 1:

It was a defensive struggle for much of the game, with South Whidbey eking out a 25-17 win.

Ari Cunningham netted a free throw to account for Coupeville’s lone first quarter point, with the Wolves trailing 3-1 at the break.

From there the Falcons held on to an 8-6 advantage at the half, before stretching the lead to 19-9 through three quarters.

The Wolves put together their best offensive surge in the fourth, with Cunningham, Lillian Ketterling, Sydney Van Dyke, and Adie Maynes scoring down the stretch.

Cunningham paced CMS with seven points, while Tenley Stuurmans (3), Ketterling (3), Maynes (2), and Van Dyke (2) rounded out the attack.

Laken Simpson, Tamsin Ward, Ava Lucero, Chelsi Stevens, Olivia Hall, and Taylor Marrs also saw floor time for the Wolves.

Level 2:

Coupeville closed the game on an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter but couldn’t quite get all the way back in a 24-19 loss.

South Whidbey inched out to an 8-6 lead after one, stretched it to 20-11 by the half, then coasted into the fourth frame up 24-11 after the Wolves went scoreless in the third.

Willow Leedy-Bonifas got Coupeville’s offense re-started in the final quarter, tossing in a pair of buckets to give her a team-high eight points, while her teammates were locked-down on defense.

Kennedy O’Neill banked in five points to back up Leedy-Bonifas, with Amelia Crowder, Sophia Batterman, and Rhylin Price each recording a bucket.

Amaiya Curry, Isabella de Souza Oliveira Mc Fetridge, and Elizabeth Marshall rounded out the CMS roster.

Level 3:

A slow first quarter hurt the Wolves, but they closed strongly during a 22-18 loss.

South Whidbey claimed the lead after a 10-0 run in the first, before the two teams battled dead even through the second and third frames.

Trailing 18-8 heading into the fourth, Coupeville rallied for a game-closing 10-4 run behind the shooting of Kaleigha Millison and Brooklyn Pope.

The duo finished the game with eight and six points, respectively, while Cassandra Powers and Emma Cushman both rattled the rim for a bucket.

Also seeing floor time were Zariyah Allen, Claire Lachnit, Zayne Roos, and Cameron Van Dyke.
