“They all ran beautifully!”

They finished the season like they started it — leaving everything out on the course.

Putting in some of their best times of the campaign Saturday at the 2B state cross country championships in Pasco, the Coupeville High School harriers closed with a bang.

“They all ran beautifully!” said Wolf coach Elizabeth Bitting. “What a cap off to an already great season!!”

Coupeville, which revived its cross country program in 2017 after a two-decade shut down, sent 11 runners East this time, most of the new era.

The Wolf boys had a full team in the competition and earned 9th place, one spot better than their finish last year.

Cle Elum-Roslyn claimed the boys’ team title, while Coupeville’s Northwest 2B/1B League rival Mount Vernon Christian was 7th.

Dexter Delaney, a senior from Liberty, won the individual crown.

The Wolf girls ran strongly.

On the girls’ side of things, it was incredibly close, with Rainier nipping Pope John Paul II 71-72 for the team crown.

Friday Harbor finished 8th as a unit to give the NWL its best showing among schools which qualified a full female team.

Top individual honors on the 5,000-meter course at the Sun Willows Golf Course went to Regan Thomas, a junior from Saint George’s.

Saturday’s meet was the last one for three Wolf seniors, as Carson Field, Landon Roberts, and Thomas Strelow reached the final finish line after helping rebuild their school’s running program.

“It’s an end of an era!” Bitting said. “Missing those senior boys already. Heavy sigh.”

But the future is a bright one, as eight of the 11 Wolves who ran in Pasco can return next year.

That group includes two freshmen (Mikayla Wagner, Devon Wyman), two sophomores (Kenneth Jacobsen, Ethan Walling), and four juniors.

Aleksia Jump, Ezekiel Allen, Aleera Kent, and George Spear will be seniors next year, as will be Noelle Western, a two-time state meet qualifier who was denied a third trip by injuries.

Harriers nab sweet state meet sendoff

They’re Pasco-bound.

Well, not until very early Friday morning, but Coupeville High School cross country runners were hailed Thursday as they prep for the trip to the state meet.

The Wolves are sending their entire boys’ team and four female runners to the 2B championships, which go down Saturday.

With 11 harriers set to count in the standings, it’s the biggest collection to earn the trip since CHS revived its running program in 2017 after a two-decade shutdown.

Bumpy trails, brilliant results

The history, like a lot of the trails used, is a bit bumpy and uneven.

Coupeville High School has had an on and off, then on again, relationship with cross country over the years.

The Wolves boast two individual state champs, but one of those only competed in a Coupeville uniform at the very end of his career.

That’s because, for a long chunk of time, CHS didn’t have its own in-house harrier program, having shut down the sport in the ’90s.

So, when Tyler King came along in the 2000’s, while he attended school in Coupeville, he ran for Oak Harbor.

Up until his senior season, when paper shuffling between the schools kicked him out of the 4A classification that the Wildcats were part of and put him running as a one-man Wolf crew back in 1A.

King promptly closed his senior season by claiming the 2010 state title, joining 1985 champ Natasha Bamberger, who won at the B/1A level, finishing in the top eight at state in all four of her seasons at CHS.

Going through records held by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, marks for state cross country meets go back to 1959 for boys, 1973 for girls.

Though, looking up small school activity from 1977-1979 currently gets you a “404 – File or directory not found” notice. So, as usual, there will always be gaps in my research, apparently.

And that does directly affect this story, as the CHS boys won league and district titles in 1977, before finishing 5th as a team at state.

But, with no access to old Whidbey News-Times archives — they’re locked-down off-Island these days — and no WIAA info, I can’t definitively list those runners for you today.

But here’s what I have found, with a surge in the ’70s and ’80s, then a long gap as CHS largely shied away from the sport, and now the rebirth of recent years after Willie Smith, Elizabeth Bitting, Bamberger, and others revived the program.

Reese rocks the joint!

For 34 years, no one has come close to Jennie (Cross) Prince.

Then along came Reese.

Putting together the best afternoon of her track and field career on the final day of her high school athletic career, Coupeville senior Reese Wilkinson made history Saturday at the 2B state championship meet in Yakima.

Chucking the discus 121 feet, 10 inches, she broke her own PR by almost 10 and a half feet and took down the school mark of 120-03 set back in 1990.

While Prince still holds the CHS girls’ record in the shot put — under her maiden name — she was thrilled to see one of her marks finally toppled by the young women who have followed in her footsteps.

“Awesome!!! Congratulations to Reese!!!!” she said.

Wilkinson, like the woman she will replace on the school’s track record board, finished 2nd at state, one of three medals claimed by Coupeville athletes on the final day of the three-day extravaganza.

Sophomore Carly Burt sailed to a 5th place finish in the pole vault, while senior Nick Guay notched another 5th, this one in the high jump.

The trio join freshmen Axel Marshall and junior Cael Wilson, who finished 5th and 8th, respectively, in the pole vault Friday.

Burt and Wilson have two state meet medals to their credit now, with more time to add to that total.

Among active Wolves, they trail only current junior Lyla Stuurmans, who has three to her credit.

Marshall, Guay, and Wilkinson became the 88th, 89th, and 90th Wolves to earn a medal since the modern era of state track and field meets began in 1964.

Pole vaulters pace Wolves at state

The pole vaulters got them on the scoreboard.

Freshman Axel Marshall and junior Cael Wilson captured Coupeville’s first medals Friday during day two of the 2B state track and field championships.

Competing at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima, Marshall soared 18 inches higher than his previous PR to finish fifth, while Wilson claimed 8th in the event for a second-straight season.

Marshall is the 88th Wolf to earn a state meet medal in the modern era (1963-2024).

While the duo were the only medal winners for Coupeville, the Wolves did nail down six PR’s on the day.

The three-day meet wraps Saturday, kicking off with the “opening ceremonies,” then getting into another full day of competition.

Coupeville will have Aleera Kent (3200), Carson Field (3200), Nick Guay (High Jump), Carly Burt (Pole Vault), Aleksia Jump (Pole Vault), Reese Wilkinson (Discus), and Zac Tackett (Discus) in action during the finale.
