Big day on the big stage!!

They had themselves quite a day.

The Coupeville High School track and field team dominated Saturday at the 1A Olympic League Sub-District meet in Poulsbo.

Where to start?

At the top, where the Wolf girls ended up, and they will add a plaque to the school’s Wall of Fame.

Paced by freshman Maya Toomey-Stout and senior Skyler Lawrence, Coupeville collected five wins and 12 PRs while advancing at least 13 girls on to Districts.

With 102 points, the Wolves topped Klahowya (93), Port Townsend (50) and Chimacum (19) to reign as 1A League/Sub-District champs.

CHS finished 5th overall (out of 11 teams) in the Olympic League Championships.

That scoring system pitted the four 1A schools against the seven 2A schools which also sit under the league’s banner.

Toomey-Stout, who won the 100 and 200, while also running a leg on a victorious 4 x 200 relay team, was picked as the 1A Female Track Athlete of the Meet.

Lawrence, who claimed first in shot put and second in discus, was the 1A Female Field Athlete of the Meet.

Naika Hallam rounded out the female Wolf winners, capturing the javelin title.

On the boys side, CHS finished second in Sub-Districts, 5th in the OLC.

Port Townsend won the 1A boys title with 93 points, while Klahowya (75) narrowly edged Coupeville (74). Chimacum (19) was a distant fourth.

Ginormous 2A school North Kitsap won both team titles in the OLC tally.

The Coupeville boys were led by sprinter Jacob Smith, who was tabbed as the 1A Male Track Athlete of the Meet.

He won the 100 and 200 (a race in which his winning 1A time was better than any 2A runner) and ran a leg on a triumphant 4 x 400 unit.

Super sophomore Danny Conlisk joined Smith as a three-time winner, capturing the 400 and 800 in addition to being on the relay squad.

Ariah Bepler (High Jump) and Mitchell Carroll (Triple Jump) rounded out the Wolf boys who won league titles.

Carroll won his event by edging Port Townsend’s transcendent Seren Dances, who won three events (Long Jump, 110 Hurdles, 300 Hurdles).

Coupeville is off until May 19-20, when it clashes with the best of the Nisqually League at the District meet in Renton.

Top three finishers from Sub-Districts are guaranteed a berth at Districts, the last stop before state.

For those who finished fourth in Poulsbo, they have to wait a week until the Nisqually League holds its Sub-District meet.

With five 1A schools to the Olympic League’s four, the Nisqually is guaranteed four slots at districts.

The #4 finisher in each event from the OL will be compared to the #5 finisher in the NL, with the better time or distance getting the eighth and final slot to districts.

Coupeville had 12 fourth-place finishes, the most shocking coming in the girls 4 x 100.

That relay unit, which is ranked #9 in all of 1A, had a baton drop and scrambled to recover against teams they would have normally thrashed.

For now, CHS knows it will advance a minimum of 20 athletes (13 girls and seven boys), with six of them having qualified in three events.

Sylvia Hurlburt stalked the oval like a caged lioness, her eyes burning through anyone who dared to step into her path.

Then, a slight hidden smile, and the Coupeville High School senior dropped the hammer, taking the baton from close friend Makana Stone and hitting the jets to completely obliterate whatever small resistance still stood in the path of the Wolf 4 x 100 relay squad.

As Hurlburt blazed down the back stretch, ballet-trained legs churning, she romped across the finish line nearly two seconds ahead of her closest rival — an eternity in the event.

A solid punch to the solar plexus of anyone who dared to step to her and teammates Stone, Lauren Grove and Lindsey Roberts, it was the perfect stamp to a very impressive Saturday for the CHS track and field squad.

Competing head-to-head with their three 1A Olympic League rivals at the sub-district meet in Bremerton, the Wolves piled up 12 wins and 13 PRs while sending a wave of athletes on to next weekend’s district meet.

The final stop before the state tourney, districts, which pits the best of the Olympic League vs. the cream of the Nisqually League, will be May 20-21, back in Bremerton.

To get there, the Wolves had to claim a top three finish Saturday.

For those who finished fourth, a small flicker of hope will live on, until they find out if their time or distance was better than the fifth-place finisher from the Nisqually League meet.

Demonstrating depth across the board, Coupeville tied Klahowya 77-77 for the 1A girls title, edging out Port Townsend (76) and Chimacum (24).

The Wolf boys finished second, narrowly nipped 82-78 by Klahowya in a case of what-could-have-been.

Port Townsend (65) and Chimacum (38) rounded out the team scores.

The question mark comes from two injuries suffered early in the meet.

Lathom Kelley and Gabe Eck both claimed PRs in the long jump, but tweaked things while jumping in hazy rain conditions and sat out the rest of the meet.

Those who did stay on their feet had huge days, topped by Dalton Martin, who shattered PRs in the shot put, discus and javelin by a combined total of nearly 10 feet.

His wins in the shot put and discus were matched by victories from Danny Conlisk (800), Jordan Ford (pole vault), Mitchell Carroll (triple jump), Stone (400, 800), Hurlburt (200), Roberts (long jump) and both the 4 x 1 and 4 x 2 girls relay squads.

The Wolves netted 32 district qualifiers, and may kick that up to 35 after the Olympic and Nisqually League compare sub-districts results.

A preliminary scan of Athletic.net seems to indicate Jared Helmstadter (400) and Eck (long jump) will slide through, as their fourth-place marks Saturday trump the #5 result posted in the Nisqually League.

Wolf frosh Chris Battaglia, who went 4-10 in the high jump to finish fourth, has the exact same mark as that put up by Zach Douglass of Bellevue Christian, fifth in the Nisqually League.

How that tie will be decided is unknown.

They had the wins, and, even though they didn’t have enough places to carry the day, they put on a big show.

Despite boasting less than half the student body of league rival Klahowya, the Coupeville High School girls’ track team came dangerously close to capturing a team title at Saturday’s Sub-District meet in Bremerton.

Riding the crest of eight wins, including a sweep of the relays and sprints, the Wolves finished second to the Eagles, who used far superior depth to eke out a 97-74 win.

Port Townsend and Chimacum trailed far behind.

On the boys side, Port Townsend claimed top honors, followed by Klahowya, Chimacum and Coupeville.

Like all track meets, however, the real focus was on individual accomplishment, with top three finishers earning a berth to next weekend’s district meet, the last stop before state.

Wolves who finished fourth in their event may still live on, as well, once all the numbers come in.

If their time/throw was better than the #5 result from the Nisqually League, they will also move on.

As it stands now, Coupeville will advance eight girls and four boys in individual events, plus two relay teams.

Coupeville got two wins from zippy junior Makana Stone (200, 400) and one apiece from Sylvia Hurlburt (100), Skyler Lawrence (Shot Put), Lauren Bayne (High Jump) and Lauren Grove (Triple Jump).

The Wolves also swept the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 (Grove, Hurlburt, Stone, Marisa Etzell), while Dalton Martin claimed Coupeville’s lone boys title in the discus.
