Tyler Cermak: "I was told there would be cake!!"

Tyler Cermak: “I was told there would be cake!!”

It’s cake day, times two.

Coupeville High School athletes Tyler Cermak and William Nelson share a birthday, and a sense of easy-going cool.

For Nelson, he shows it as he glides across the tennis court and soccer pitch, rarely looking flustered, but always leaving his foes looking downright baffled.

In Cermak’s case, the football player who has had to adapt into becoming perhaps the best manager in the world as he deals with health issues, he never breaks a sweat as well.

Whether it’s scooping up vital info from the gridiron and slipping it my way while never letting the camera bobble as he shoots action, or staying above it all as the longtime Patriots fan is verbally harassed by jealous Seahawk “fans,” he, like Nelson, is one cool dude.

The duo also excel at supporting their classmates, and can be seen at almost every CHS game, knee-deep in the action of the Wolf student section.

As both celebrate their birthday, we just want to send them our best.

Both you guys come across as top-quality dudes, on and off the field, and it’s an honor to have you front and center in Wolf Nation.

Now, did someone say something about cake?!?!

Tyler Cermak is the quickest in all the land.

When the Coupeville High School football squad does a fundraiser to nab bucks to help players pay for a summer camp at Central Washington University, he may or may not do the most pushups.

But he was the first Wolf to think about hitting me up for an article, so he wins that one-time jackpot.

The “Push-Up-A-Thon”, which runs through May 28 (the actual event does not have a concrete day yet), involves CHS players getting pledges or donations based on how many pushups (proper form) they can do in a four-minute spell.

For example, if you pledge $1 per pushup, and Mr. Cermak rips off 70, you’d owe him $70.

The pledge can be for any amount, or, if you’re worried he’s a pushup machine just waiting to go ballistic on you, a person can also just donate a set amount.

Tyler can be contacted at 17thargrave@coupeville.k12.wa.us or, if you have questions, call Coupeville football coach Brett Smedley at 360-901-2482.

P.S. — You can also pledge or donate to any Wolf football player of your choosing, but I’m only writing one article.

The young guns get a little older today.

A day after his New England Patriots won their fourth Super Bowl title, Wolf football player Tyler Cermak shares a birthday with netter William Nelson.

Two of the more promising young athletes to walk the hallways at Coupeville High School, they have both shone during the start of their days in red and black.

Cermak has fought through health issues to remain a key part of the Wolf football program. Whether on the field or off, he remains as devoted to the gridiron squad as anyone on it.

Plus, he’s the one who first tipped me to the news of Brett Smedley being hired as the new Wolf head coach, allowing me to scoop the Canadian papers.

Well played, Mr. Cermak.

Nelson, younger brother of Wolf netter/booter Loren Nelson, made an immediate impact for the Wolf tennis squad during his first days as a high school student.

Teaming with fellow frosh Joey Lippon, Nelson advanced to the postseason and the duo gave fans a view of the future of Wolf tennis. Spoiler: it’s a bright one.

Since it’s a Monday, they’re back at school (I assume. Cermak may be still celebrating.) and probably are limited on time. So, I’ll make this quick.

Happy birthday, gentlemen. May both of you continue to play out what looks like a bright athletic future.

Doctors believe Tyler Cermak’s brain tumor is benign and surgery will not be required.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, who has suffered seizures in the past, was discovered to have the tumor when he went in for a checkup after suffering a possible concussion during the spring football scrimmage with Lakeside.

Cermak and his parents met with doctors Wednesday, and he discussed the results on Facebook:

So, got some good news today.

My tumor is most likely benign and is really small compared to others.

The docs don’t think it’ll grow any bigger. I will be having MRI’s over the next few months just to keep eyes on it.

I will be taking medication to control the seizures.

If that medication doesn’t work I’ll take another. If the second doesn’t work than I will have to have surgery.

Unless it grows, It’s not likely I will have surgery.

Cermak plans to remain with the Wolf football team as a manager.

A possible concussion during last weekend’s summer football scrimmage may have been a good thing for Tyler Cermak.

The Coupeville High School sophomore went in for a check-up after last weekend’s match-up with Lakeside, and while doctors checked him for concussion symptoms, they found something far worse.

An MRI showed Cermak has a tumor on the left front part of his brain.

It’s not known yet whether the tumor is cancerous or benign. Cermak will head to Children’s Hospital in Seattle Wednesday with his parents to plan for surgery.

“Thank God he was on the field that day and got that concussion so he could get tested,” said CHS football coach Tony Maggio.

While the tumor will keep Cermak off the playing field, he plans on staying with the Wolves as a team manager.

For CHS fans who want to send him best wishes, Tyler can be contacted at 17thargrave@coupeville.k12.wa.us.

“I could use the support,” Cermak said. “Thank you!”
