Lucy Sandahl

The future is bright for Lucy Sandahl.

As a two-sport athlete who’s also proudly a self-proclaimed “math nerd,” she heads into her freshman year at Coupeville High School this fall expecting the best.

“I am looking forward to high school and what is in store for my life,” Sandahl said. “I look forward to making new friends and making more memories with old ones.

“I just want to live my high school experience filled with amazing teachers and people I love,” she added. “I’m ready to finally enter the world known as high school.

“I look forward to being a part of class 2020 and can’t wait for hopefully the best four years of my life.”

The South Carolina native, whose older sister Sophie plays for the Wolf soccer squad, plans to take on volleyball and track at CHS.

She enjoys the challenges offered by both sports and doesn’t play favorites.

“I don’t really have a favorite. I love them both because I experience two different feelings with both sports,” Sandahl said. “In volleyball I feel like I will learn something new every day, I will always work 110%, and I am always ready to work hard and learn something new.

“With track I feel all those things too, but I feel when I’m running no one can touch me,” she added. “I feel like the race isn’t about the people that are to my right and left, but the battle is between me and the track. And I love that feeling.”

More than anything, Sandahl enjoys the chance sports offers to find common ground with her friends and classmates.

“I love the teammates the most and I love getting to learn new skills and being passionate about something,” she said. “It’s always a great feeling when you’re in shape and you always feel good about what you’re doing.”

While she has natural talent, Sandahl also appreciates the time and effort one needs to put in to keep rising to new levels in their sport. Practice does not faze her.

“My biggest strength is probably the fact that I will take any task that the coaches or teammates throw at me and yes, I may fail sometimes, but I’m always willing to learn and fix my mistakes,” she said.

Maintaining a positive outlook, through good times and bad times alike, is hugely important, as well.

“I would really like to work on my mentality when it comes to competing and practice,” Sandahl said. “I always get in my head and become really hard on myself and I beat myself up about everything I do.

“So I just need to become more hardy and believe more in myself and I will be set for high school athletically and academically.”

Those academics are a huge part of her life, and a part she plans to put an emphasis on at the high school level.

“I want to start figuring out what I want to do with my life beyond school,” Sandahl said. “I want to really focus on school work.

“I am one of those strange math nerds though,” she added with a laugh. “Math is my absolute favorite subject.

“I don’t know why, it’s just I always go into the math room ready to see what scary, funky, cool lesson I’m gonna do that day.”

When she’s not plowing through class lessons or competing in the athletic arena, Sandahl loves hanging out with family and friends and exploring nature, going on trail runs with her dad.

Country music (“not like the banjo music!”) is her favorite, and she enjoys Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw and many more.

“I know most people are against country, but hey, I got to stick to my South Carolina roots.”

Through it all, Sandahl has always been able to rely on those closest to her for encouragement and support, something she deeply appreciates.

“My parents have been by my side every step of the way (mainly because they have to be, but that’s the little stuff),” Sandahl said. “They have came to all of my games, awards ceremonies, performances, concerts and they will continue to no matter what crazy things I want to pursue or whatever/wherever I go in life.

“They were the people there when I rode my bike for the first time and fell over, they were there for my first sports game, they were there before every sports season helping me get ready and sometimes back into shape.

“They are the people that I have looked up to and the people that have helped me be the person I am today. And I love them.”

The spikers of tomorrow learned big lessons today.

New Coupeville High School volleyball coach Cory Whitmore and a bunch of his Wolf players gathered at the CHS gym Saturday to put on a skills clinic for the community’s youngest hitters.

Sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club, the event was a fast-paced, fun morning, complete with photographer.

Bouncing around Coupeville to snap pics at several locations, wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken snagged the glossy photos above, which he was nice enough to share with us.

Yeah, if you could get your paperwork done on time, that’d be great.

I know, it’s only late June, but if you think and plan ahead, life is going to be so much easier later this summer.

Dates to keep in mind:

Paperwork turn-in day for all Coupeville High School/Middle School sports is Aug. 11 from noon-6 PM in the CHS gym.

High school football starts practice Aug. 17.

High school volleyball, girls soccer and boys tennis start practice Aug. 22.

Middle school football and volleyball start practice Sept. 6.

Players need to have ALL paperwork turned in prior to stepping on the field/court (or Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith is allowed to throw dirty gym socks at you) and all fees must be paid by Aug. 29.

Stay on top of things. Be prepared. Be ready.

Cause I’m pretty sure the dirty gym socks things is real. Pretty, pretty, pretty sure.

Raven Vick

Vick gazes into a bright future.

Vick gazes into a bright future.

Sports and friendship go together, hand-in-hand, for Raven Vick.

“I enjoy being able to play with other people that feel the same way about the sport as I do,” she said.

One half of a pair of talented twins, Raven and sister Willow will head to Coupeville High School this fall for their freshman year.

When they do, Raven will enter with well thought-out goals, both for sports and the real world.

“My goals for my freshman year are to keep a 3.5 or higher GPA,” Vick said. “And possibly go to state with our teams.

“My goals for later in life would be playing volleyball on varsity and playing in college,” she added. “I would also like to open a business with my sister.”

Vick plans to play volleyball and run track as a Wolf, and her top sport comes first in the year.

“Volleyball is my favorite because I get to play with a team and make new friends,” she said. “I also love everything about the sport, diving, jump serving, etc.”

When she’s not spiking volleyballs or hurling the javelin, Vick can often be found snapping photos (“I love taking pictures of the trees and the sky”), listening to music or sailing.

She’s discovered a yen for Korean K-Pop music (“shout-out to Luci Coleburn for getting me hooked during our band festival”) and enjoys her yearbook and math classes.

A whiz kid in the classroom, she’s two years ahead of most of her fellow freshmen in math and will be taking Algebra 2 College Prep.

Whether she’s breaking down theorems or droppin’ aces on the court, Vick gets a substantial amount of support from her family, something for which she’s grateful.

“I think my parents have made a huge impact on me,” she said “They are always pushing me and supporting me in anything that I decide to do.

“And my sister is always there for me, whether she’s playing on the same court or cheering me on in the stands.”

Willow Vick (John Fisken photos)

Vick dares the pitcher to try and throw the ball past her.

Willow Vick is not afraid of a challenge.

When Central Whidbey Little League was scrambling around this spring, trying to pull together enough athletes to form a Juniors softball squad, she came to their rescue.

And, despite never having played before, she acquitted herself quite nicely, growing in confidence as the season progressed and being a vital part of a Venom squad which finished 13-3.

Now, as she and twin sister Raven head into their freshman year at Coupeville High School this fall, Willow is ready for new challenges.

She plans to play volleyball in the fall, and is debating between a return to softball or heading out to take advantage of the school’s new track come spring.

Sports are just one part of Vick’s life, however, as she enjoys drawing, swimming, sleeping and working out.

Her musical tastes run to Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy, while movie-wise she’s fond of Mary Poppins.

So, pretty broad spectrum there.

When she is competing, Vick picks volleyball as her primary sport.

“It’s fun, lots of work, keeps you mentally and physically fit,” she said.

She enjoys how sports help her keep in shape and build muscle, but is always working to become a more technically sound athlete.

“I want to get my serves over the net 95% of the time,” Vick said. “I need to work on being louder and more confident.”

She’s also got an eye on improving her softball hitting, and, away from the arena, would like to sharpen her drawing skills and keep her grades up.

Her positive traits are many.

“My technical abilities, I’m a good teammate, good setter I guess, lots of power,” Vick said. “I’m willing to try new things like playing softball for the first time, not afraid to ask for help.”

Whether it’s something she’s done once or a thousand times, she knows she can always turn to her fan club for support.

“My parents, for always pushing me to be my best and to never give up when things get tough,” Vick said. “Friends who support me.

“Lisa Toomey for giving crazy pep talks before, during and after games,” she added. “And my twin for always being someone to compete with and support me.”
