Zane Bundy

OK, before you all start whining, I know these aren’t 100% correct.

For some reason, special teams is incomplete this week, as both the punting and return totals from Friday’s game against Chimacum weren’t entered on MaxPreps.com by the Coupeville High School coaches.

So, if your name is say, Clay Reilly or Wiley Hesselgrave or Hunter Smith, you may have something to discuss with the higher-ups at the next team meeting.

Other than that, though, we’re pretty close.

The big highlight is Smith claiming the single season record for interceptions with seven. Or, at least, the record from the past 15 years or so.

Snatching three more picks Friday, he slipped past Josh Bayne, who netted six INTs a year ago.

Celebrate the record, Hunter, go add to it in the remaining games, and don’t think about the fact that one day we may finally retrieve all of the lost CHS sports records and discover Bayne never really owned the record.

Also of note is Wolf kicker Zane Bundy moving up into a third-place tie for most field goals kicked this season by a Washington state football player.

Notching his fourth of the season Friday, he’s tied for the lead in 1A with Port Townsend’s Gerry Coker, and they sit one field goal behind Bryce Bendixen of 4A Bellarmine Prep.

Jack Crane of 4A Sammamish is way out in front with 11.

And then, as always, the giggles took over.

Ridin’ the ferry. Ridin’ the ferry all year long.

It’s what Whidbey athletes and fans do, and the familiar routine played out again, as a chunk of Wolf Nation flooded onto a boat or two and bobbed its way over to Port Townsend for a dash of Friday Night Lights.

Coupeville returned with a win (28-26 over Chimacum), a share of first place in the 1A Olympic League standings and a string of snazzy photos courtesy travelin’ camera clicker John Fisken.

The faces change from year to year, but the feeling remains.

Something magical about small town football Fridays, on and off the field.

They saved their best for last.

Capping a stellar four-day run at the Nike Crossfire Challenge in Redmond, the Washington Rush select soccer squad won a pair of thrillers Monday to claim a title in the mens’ U19 gold group.

The team, which counts Coupeville High School senior Zane Bundy as a captain, finished the tourney with a 3-0-2 record.

After winning its group, the Rush faced off with Crossfire Oregon 97 Black in the semifinals.

Oregon came in to the match with a flawless 3-0 mark from group play, but couldn’t get a ball past the Rush and fell 1-0.

That sent Bundy and Co. into the finals against Tynecastle FC, and the Rush repeated the earlier success with another 1-0 victory to grab the championship banner.

The tourney, which drew teams from all across the western states, as well as Canada, is a showcase where players get a chance to play in front of college scouts.

Zane Bundy is busy dazzling the college scouts.

The Coupeville High School soccer ace spent the weekend playing in the Nike Crossfire Challenge in Redmond, considered the premier youth tourney in the Pacific Northwest.

With Bundy leading the way as a team captain, he and his Washington Rush teammates swept to first-place in Bracket B of the U19 Gold Group and will play in the semifinals Monday.

The Rush (1-0-2) will face off with Crossfire Oregon 97 Black (3-0-0) at 10 AM. Win and they advance to the championship game at 2:15.

That game would pit them against the winner of the other semifinal match-up, between Tynecastle FC (1-0-2) and Pacific Northwest SC (2-1-0).

Bundy’s squad opened with a 3-2 victory Friday over Highline Premier FC, then held on for a pair of hotly-contested 1-1 draws Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament draws select teams from multiple states (Washington, California, Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, Alaska, Utah and Montana) as well as Canada.

The 2014 tournament boasted more than 500 teams spread out over the various age groups and the games are closely-watched by representatives from multiple colleges.

Bundy, who was named a captain for next year’s Wolf squad (he’ll share duties with fellow senior Tanner Kircher) is just getting back into the flow of the game, having recently recovered from a leg injury that cost him most of his junior season.

Once a Wolf, always a Wolf -- softball/cheer/cookie baking whiz kid Emily Licence.

Once a Wolf, always a Wolf — softball/cheer/cookie baking whiz kid Emily Licence.

There are a million, billion twinkling lights in the Wolf Nation universe, and two of the brightest share a birthday today.

Zane Bundy and Emily Licence are united by the day they popped into the world, and by general awesomeness, if not by a school anymore.

Licence, who a year ago was just about to slap on her face mask and patrol third base for CHS at the state softball tournament, now lives in California after a family move.

But just because she’s in a different state doesn’t detract a bit from the legacy she left behind during her days as a Wolf.

Scrappy infielder and pitcher. Peppy cheerleader. A saint who baked me cookies and presented them to me at one of her softball games.

Emily was all of those things, plus a talented dancer and owner of a serene, sweet personality.

Now, another town, another school, benefits from having her grace them with her presence, but she was a Wolf first, and a pretty darn great one.

One of us, always.

Mr. Bundy is a high-flying daredevil on the soccer pitch who rocks a suit and tie combo like few high school students ever have.

It still throws me off a bit to see him cruising through high school as a matinee idol, since he’s one of the kids who grew up in the aisles of Videoville.

He was always super cool even as a young boy, and, while the hair and clothes have gotten a bit fancier (the guy is the king of slick soccer shoes), Zane is still as friendly and easy-going as always.

Both of today’s birthday cake recipients are good athletes and better people, and should make their parents truly proud.

Whether I’ve known them most of their life, or just for a brief time, they have both impressed me and, I am sure, will continue to do so.

Wherever they celebrate today, I wish them both the best.

Happy birthday Emily and Zane.
