Cooper flexes, Wolves stumble

All or nothing.

The Coupeville High School baseball squad only collected two hits Thursday on Orcas Island, but they were both big time shots.

Coop Cooper cranked a two-run home run over the fence in centerfield — the first out-of-the-park tater for the Wolves this year — while Landon Roberts missed going yard by about five feet, settling for a ground-rule double.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, there wasn’t enough other offense, and too many errors on defense, as they fell 12-2 in a game mercy-ruled in the bottom of the fifth.

The loss drops Coupeville to 5-5 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 6-10 overall.

Next up is a palate cleanser Saturday, when Steve Hilborn’s team travels to Langley to clash with South Whidbey in a non-conference tilt.

After that, the Wolves close the regular season with two against current league leader Mount Vernon Christian as they chase a playoff berth.

Thursday’s game, coming on the heels of a razor-close loss to Orcas in Cow Town Tuesday, was a tense one for three-and-a-half innings.

The Vikings pushed a run across in the bottom of the first, after Roberts kicked off the game with his double, only to be stranded at third.

But the Wolves held tough, with freshman pitcher Carson Grove holding Orcas down, and that gave Cooper a chance to be a hero.

Leo Rodriguez was aboard thanks to a walk, when Coupeville made its move in the top of the third.

Cooper’s blast pushed the visitors ahead 2-1, though the Vikings knotted things back up at 2-2 in the bottom half of the frame.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, they went seven up and seven down after the home run, while having one really rough inning in the field.

Orcas exploded for eight runs in its half of the fourth, using a mix of base knocks and CHS errors, and effectively took control of things.

Coupeville finished with eight errors on the day, while the Vikings played error-free ball themselves.

From there, two more runs in the bottom of the fifth pushed the lead to 10 runs, and the mercy rule brought things to an early end.

Grove and Roberts combined to whiff six Orcas hitters.

Wolf singles aces stay undefeated

Pick a town, and they win.

Whether playing at home or on the road this season, Coupeville High School netters Tenley Stuurmans and Dahlia Miller have been perfect.

And that continued Wednesday, as both hardcourt aces won in straight sets while playing on Friday Harbor in a Northwest 2B/1B League match.

The host Wolverines did escape with a 3-2 match victory after sweeping the doubles portion of the festivities, clinching the league title.

But the big story remains the undefeated run by Coupeville’s singles players as they head into the final matches of the regular season.

The Wolves travel to Granite Falls Monday, May 5, before hosting Friday Harbor two days later for Senior Night.

After that, it’s on to the postseason for Stuurmans, Miller, and associates.

New season, new triumphs

Tamsin Ward is back, and so are the wins.

The Coupeville 8th grader kicked off her third, and final, season of middle school track and field Wednesday by doing exactly what she’s done for two years running.

Whomp on people.

Ward, who earned 23 wins across her first two CMS seasons, captured wins in the 100, shot put, and high jump while competing against Northshore Christian Academy and Sultan in her home stadium.

And she wasn’t the only Wolf to have an excellent day, with Diesel Eck and Elizabeth Marshall also claiming parts of three victories.

The former won the shot put and discus while running a leg on a 4 x 100 relay team, while the latter claimed top honors in the 100 hurdles and long jump, then pulled duty on a triumphant 4 x 200 squad.

River Simpson and Cyrus Sparacio were two-time winners, with Coupeville holding its own in the team standings as well.

The Wolf 8th grade girls and boy’s 6th/7th squad captured team titles.

“Our first meet of the season was a great adventure!” said CMS coach Jon Gabelein.

“While some students were more nervous than others about stepping into their first meet of the season, they all showed up ready to work hard and show good sportsmanship at the same time!

“Now that they have their baseline numbers, their continued practice and pushing themselves even more will allow them to generate even stronger results during the coming weeks!”

Ready to rumble.

Sluggers stay locked ‘n loaded

Three weeks on the chart.

Coming off wins against Forks and Orcas Island, the Coupeville High School softball squad maintains its hold on the #9 ranking in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association RPI list.

The Wolves, who sit at 14-1 with three regular season games left on the schedule, are one of just two 2B schools to have only a single loss on their record.

River View, at 16-1 and ranked #4, is the other.

Coupeville has rolled off 13 straight wins since its only defeat, a 5-4 road loss to 3A Oak Harbor.

Aaron Lucero’s sluggers cracked the top 10 in the RPI rankings three weeks ago, debuting at #10. They moved up to #9 last week and hold firm in the same spot this time around.
