The sun was back, and it brought the offense with it.

A day after the Coupeville High School varsity baseball team was rained out, the Wolf JV had beautiful weather for its game Thursday, a day when the only thing raining down was runs.

How many runs you ask? A heck of a lot of runs.

31 to be exact, as visiting Sequim built a 12-run lead, then held off a furious Coupeville comeback and escaped with an 18-13 win.

The loss drops the Wolf JV to 0-2 on the season.

It was the kind of day when 95% of the players scored at least one run apiece.

OK, it’s probably simpler to just say Sequim third-baseman Julian Hernandez was the only player, out of 20 to see the field, who didn’t touch home.

He was 90 feet away in the first inning, but the Wolves denied him, and then every other player in uniform went and did what he couldn’t.

All 10 Wolves scored, with Jered Brown, Mason Grove and Drake Borden crossing the plate twice each and CHS racking up 15 hits on the afternoon.

Coupeville claimed its only lead of the game at 4-2 after piling up five of those base-knocks in the bottom of the first.

Brown, Grove, Jake Pease, Shane Losey and Johnny Carlson all put good metal to ball, as the Wolves looked like they might roll away with things.

Sequim managed to put a damper on things though, escaped the inning, then held CHS scoreless until the fourth as it built a 9-4 lead.

The Wolves chipped away for two runs in the fourth to pull back within three runs, then the fifth inning went nuclear on both sides of the ball.

Sequim erupted for nine runs in the top half of the inning, blowing the game open to an 18-6 tune, then promptly almost gave it all back.

Putting together five hits, including two from freshman Daniel Olson, Coupeville sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven of them in the bottom of the fifth.

And then, as suddenly as the offense came, it fled again, with the two teams both failing to score a run across the final two innings.

Carlson, who came on in relief in the fifth, closed out the game on the mound, striking out two as he shut Sequim down in the sixth and seventh.

Coupeville’s hit parade was led by Brown and Grove, who each collected four hits, while Jacob Zettle, Gavin Straub and James Vidoni joined their teammates by scoring.

Coupeville junior Matt Hilborn, a baseball star since his freshman season, was tabbed Wednesday as a WIAA Athlete of the Week. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Welcome to the big time, Matt Hilborn.

The Coupeville High School junior, a stellar football and baseball player for the Wolves, has been Mr. Steady for the past three years, but Wednesday, the spotlight found him.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association tabbed Hilborn as its 1A Male Athlete of the Week, honoring him along with seven other competitors from 4A-2B.

He was honored for his play Mar. 10 in the season opener against Lynden Christian, when the CHS diamond men rolled to a 7-3 win.

Hitting lead-off, Hilborn paced the Wolves with three hits and two RBI, while also beating a throw home, sliding under the tag for a crucial run.

That stretched Coupeville’s lead to 5-3, then, in his next at-bat, Hilborn capped things with a game-clinching two-run single to right field.

After starting at third base and playing spotless defense through the first five innings, he moved to the mound in the sixth, coming on in relief of starting hurler Dane Lucero.

Hilborn closed the game with two innings of scoreless work as a pitcher, striking out two and recording the final out on a come-backer to the mound.

Follow in the path of Jim (left) and Joel Wheat and embrace the umpire lifestyle. (Connie Lippo photo)

Everyone thinks they can umpire.

At least that’s the impression one gets sitting in the stands.

Well, now’s your time to put up or shut up, as District 11, which includes Central Whidbey, is in need of umpires for little league season.

If you’re interested in joining the ranks of the men (and women) in blue, or are already an ump and want to refine your skills, the district is hosting a clinic Sunday, Mar. 18 in Anacortes.

It will run from 8 AM to 5 PM at Marguerite and Don Daniels Field (1915 13th Street).

This event is specifically designed for juniors umpires (players ages 10-18) to learn proper mechanics in a setting with their peers.

Western Region instructors and Regional/World Series umpires will be on hand to run the clinic.

If you’re planning to attend, they request you RSVP, so they can plan how many lunches they’ll need to provide.

Cost is $8.00 for the day and will be paid on arrival.

To RSVP, or for any questions, contact Bill Kosmas at strike_3@rocketmail.com or 360-770-6755.

It’s Opening Day, but James Vidoni already has the beard in mid-season form. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Wolf catcher Gavin Knoblich swaps baseballs (and small talk) with the ump.

Coupeville players hang out in the (surprising) sunshine.

Julian Welling awaits the throw at first.

CJ Smith, a roiling cauldron of emotion.

Shane Losey eyes his next victim.

Nick Etzell goes low to snag a hot grounder.

Opening Day went off without a hitch.

Astonishingly nice weather on the prairie, a big win for Coupeville High School baseball over highly-regarded Lynden Christian, and plenty of glossy pics.

Derek Leyva knocked in two goals Saturday in a season-opening win. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Too early? Of course, it’s too early.

You don’t run league standings two days into a new season and … every Wolf varsity team is in first-place? Run that sucker!!!

So sure, maybe we’re jumping the gun just a bit, but what the hey, it’s not like we have a lot of rules here at Coupeville Sports World Headquarters.

Plus, this way, you can start to get used to the weirdness of seeing only two softball teams listed in the standings, since Port Townsend and Chimacum have bailed on their seasons.

Anyway, a look at some very, very, VERY early standings, reflecting Coupeville’s opening day sweep in baseball (7-3 over Lynden Christian) and soccer (4-1 over Olympic) and Chimacum’s 6-5 baseball loss to South Whidbey.

Olympic League baseball:

School League Overall
COUPEVILLE 0-0 1-0
