One week in, plenty left to play

It was a busy first week.

Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams played 27 games across the first seven days of the new season, with 14 of those in just the past two days.

None of the opening bouts were conference rumbles, however, so everyone is still tied for first place in the league standings.

Sort of.

After that initial flurry, in which Coupeville High School varsity hoops teams combined to play five times, things slow down this coming week for the Wolves.

Neither the boys nor the girls take the floor against a foe until Saturday, Dec. 9, when CHS listens to the song of the bus wheels during a trek to the wilds of Sultan.

Between now and then, plenty of time to tweak things in practice, rest any early-season injuries, and gaze upon the standings.

They can’t stop her!

She’s halfway through a great weekend of professional hoops action.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone kept the stat keepers hoppin’ Saturday in Norway, powering Ammerud to an 85-63 dismantling of Bergen.

The former Wolf collected 30 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and seven steals.

Coming on the heels of a 32-point performance against Asker in her last game, it gives Stone back-to-back games with 30+ points.

Ammerud, now 3-4 on the season, returns to action Sunday when it clashes with league leader Ulriken (5-1).

Stone and Co. seized control of Saturday’s game early and never let their foes back in the game.

Up 24-12 at the first break, Ammerud pushed the margin out to 51-30 at the half, then coasted into the fourth quarter up 75-45.

The Queens put four players into double digit scoring, with Julia Heiden singing the nets for 22 in support of the team’s American assassin.

With her sizzlin’ play Saturday, Stone continues a torrid campaign in the Kvinneligaen.

Now in her third season of pro ball, Andre’s sister has piled up 157 points, 81 rebounds, 27 assists, 25 steals, six blocks, and a million “Don’t hurt ’em, Kana!!! Oh, too late…”

Coupeville Middle School basketball coaches are in the spotlight on a Friday morning.

Wanderin’ photographer John Fisken moves at his own Diet Coke-fueled rhythm, so you never quite know what you’re going to get from his camera.

This time out, it’s the men (and the woman) who make the CMS hoops program hum.

They shoot, he shoots, everyone scores.

Hoops hotshot keeps hardwood dream alive

He’s still wheelin’ and dealin’ on the hardwood.

Coupeville High School grad Caleb Meyer is in his second season of playing basketball at Skagit Valley College, with the Cardinals off to a perfect start.

SVC sits at 5-0 after shredding Big Bend 90-56 Sunday afternoon.

Next up is a home game Nov. 30 against Douglas College of British Columbia, then a trip to Port Angeles Dec. 2-3 for the Pirate Classic.

Meyer has played in all five games for Skagit, racking up four points, four assists, three steals, a rebound and six tooth-rattling fouls.

During his time in Coupeville, McKenzie’s younger brother helped lead Wolf boys’ basketball to its best season in three decades-plus during his senior campaign.

CHS, a 2B school, went 16-0 during the regular season, stunned 3A Oak Harbor to rule Whidbey, won a league title, and played two games at the state tourney.

Caleb Meyer also earned a 2nd place medal in the 4 x 100 at the state track and field championships.

Young Wolves launch assault on net

Everyone is a threat to score.

With three games in the books, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball teams have seen 18 different players ring up a bucket or better.

The race for top honors is an intense one, as well, with seven players in double digits, and only four points separating the #4 scorer from the #1 offensive weapon.

With two games ahead next week — home affairs with Northshore Christian (Tuesday, Nov. 28) and Sultan (Nov. 30) — look for the numbers to keep shifting.
