Hoops teams dodge wicked weather

The season continues to unfold, when Mother Nature plays fair.

Multiple high school basketball games, though none involving Coupeville, were postponed this week as Western Washington deals with massive flooding.

Being on Whidbey Island and hopping over to play on another rock Friday — Orcas Island — the Wolves were featured in the only Northwest 2B/1B League games to be played that night.

With the week ahead, Coupeville hosts NWL rival Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, with the CHS boys then scheduled to head East for two non-conference games.

Brad Sherman’s varsity boys are slated to play at Manson Friday and Entiat Saturday, though the condition of the passes will likely tell the tale of whether those contests are played.

For the moment, here’s where things sit through Dec. 14:

Sharpen your pencils and get ready to rumble.

With a new season of high school hoops under way, the role of the scorebook keeper looms large.

Here in Coupeville, we have June Mazdra, who has been doing pristine books for three decades-plus. Advantage, us.

Once the Wolves hit the road, we’ll see if we stay as blessed but hope springs eternal.

Hoops action heats up

We’re a week in and things are starting to pick up.

The first conference clashes for Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams arrive next Friday, Dec. 12, at which point all the squads involved will have multiple games under their belt.

For Coupeville, the week ahead has home games against non-conference foe East Jefferson — the mashup of Port Townsend and Chimacum — set for Tuesday, before the first road trip of the season three days later.

Those Friday night fracases will pit the Wolves against Orcas Island.

As we head into week #2 of the high school hoops season, a look at where things sit through Dec. 7:

Help Wolves shoot ‘n score with toy drive

Get ready to rumble, for a good cause.

Coupeville High School basketball players are launching their annual toy drive to benefit local youth, and Wolf fans will have multiple opportunities to help the cause.

When you attend CHS hoops games this month, you’ll see boxes in the lobby of the gym awaiting delivery of new, unopened toys.

As usual, there’s also a bit of a side bet to the whole thing, as one box is labeled “Girls”, and one box is labeled “Boys.”

That has nothing to do with which children will receive which toys but instead draws the battle lines between the two CHS hoops programs, as they compete to see which team can collect the most toys.

Last season, the Wolves collected 200+ gifts, and this time around they’re hoping to surpass that number.

There is home games set for Dec. 4, 6, 9, and 16 to grant you easy access to donate.

This year as well, there is a GoFundMe being run for the Holiday House, which is where the toys are dispersed through.
