“Very pleased with the way we played today.”

Coupeville High School boys soccer coach Robert Wood put some extra emphasis on the first word in that statement after his team bamboozled visiting Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood Saturday afternoon.

Kicking off the front end of a pitch doubleheader, with the Wolf girls playing in the nightcap against Ocosta, the CHS boys rolled to a 7-0 victory.

The win lifts Coupeville to 1-1 on the season, with both games coming against Northwest 2B/1B League rivals.

The Wolves hit the road early next week, traveling to La Conner Tuesday, Sept. 20, before hosting their next two games.

The first of those home tilts will be a Friday special, with kickoff at 4 PM and admission free.

Playing on their own field Saturday afternoon, the Wolves dominated from start to finish.

“Mixing up the formation and player positions does wonders,” Wood said. “Everyone executed the game plan as we talked about – quick deliberate passing with pace and accuracy.

“Off-ball movement to support the ball; three touches max before distribution; aggression and determination to get the ball first; confident defending as a team.”

Coupeville spread its scoring out, with four different players beating the CPC goaltender.

Cameron Epp opened the assault on the net, rifling home a penalty kick in the game’s 10th minute, and then then the rout was on.

Reiley Araceley, Alex Smith, and Preston Epp each scored twice to round out the offense, with all four players netting their first high school varsity goal on the same day.

With four more sharpshooters etching their names in the scorebooks, 67 Wolves have scored for the CHS boys soccer program, which began in 2004.

They’re on the board.

The Coupeville High School boys soccer squad became the final fall sports team to make its season debut, falling 6-1 Tuesday at Mount Vernon Christian.

The Wolf booters had an earlier game cancelled, pushing back their opener.

And while Coupeville lost to a tough Northwest 2B/1B League rival, it acquitted itself well.

“Great game and great play from everyone against a state contender,” said CHS coach Robert Wood.

“Gave them a chance to see the pace of play and skillset/accuracy needed to contend.”

Coupeville’s goal came courtesy Aidan Wilson, who smacked home a shot for an unassisted score.

“He wanted the ball more than the keeper,” Wood said.

It was Wilson’s fourth high school goal.

Coupeville has a chance to get a few more practices in, before its home opener Saturday, Sept. 17 against Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood.

Kickoff is at noon at Mickey Clark Field, with the Wolf girls playing Ocosta at 2 PM in the second half of a doubleheader.

Admission is free for both games.

No games for you.

Tuesday is the first day of classes for Coupeville High School students, and home games for Wolf girls soccer, volleyball, and boys soccer were on the schedule.

That shifted Monday, as Auburn Adventist Academy cancelled its planned trip to Whidbey Island.

The news pushes back season-openers for volleyball and girls soccer to Thursday, Sept. 8.

The Wolf spikers host Friday Harbor, while the booters go island-hopping to face the same school.

Of the three CHS teams affected by Tuesday’s cancellations, the one which has the longest gap in its schedule is boys soccer.

That squad is now set to open its season Sept. 13 on the road at Mount Vernon Christian.

No reason was given publicly for the Auburn Adventist cancellations, and it remains unclear if the non-conference bouts will be made up.

“I may or may not reschedule depending on our schedule availability,” said Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith.

We’re in a bit of a holding pattern.

The first game of a new school athletic year is eight days away, arriving next Friday, Sept. 2.

Until then Coupeville High School teams continue to practice, and, hopefully, Wolf coaches are prepping responses to questions so we can pound out some Fall Sports Preview stories.

We’re officially underway.

Monday brought the first practices for Coupeville High School soccer, volleyball, cross country, and tennis, while football chugged along towards the one-week mark.

Wandering down from the wilds of Oak Harbor, canny camera clicker John Fisken snapped the first shots from a new school athletic year, capturing four of six Wolf teams hard at work.
