It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that cheer.

As the high school hoops season winds down, the CHS cheer squad remains as loud ‘n proud as any in the land.

They also remain willing photo subjects, as wanderin’ photo man John Fisken found out Tuesday night.

The pics above are courtesy him, and thanks to the best cheer squad in the biz.

Mckenzie Meyer

Mckenzie Meyer did double duty, alternating between cheer and band on this evening.

They’re the best at what they do.

For the high-energy Wolf cheer crew, that means being loud and proud and nailing every routine in their playbook.

They were back at it Friday night, during home girls’ basketball games, keeping the noise and energy bouncing off of the walls of the CHS gym.

In between kicks and cheers, travelin’ photo man John Fisken slid by and captured a few pics of Cheridan Eck’s squad in action.

Moira Reed may still be relatively young, but she’s already a veteran in the world of cheer.

The Coupeville High School freshman, who was a big part of the fall Wolf squad, first started patrolling the sidelines back in elementary school.

After a brief break, she returned this year and rekindled her love affair with the sport.

“I started off in junior cheer (1st, 2nd and 4th grades) and now as a high schooler, and plan to continue for the next three years,” Reed said. “I started cheer again because I liked the idea of having a family away from home and that’s what I got.”

Her relationships with her teammates is a huge part of what keeps cheer fun for her, but she also looks forward to learning new moves, as well.

“I enjoy my cheer sisters and my cheer mom,” Reed said. “But, more than anything, the dances and stunts for sure.”

With all the practice and behind-the-scenes work the Wolves put in to perfect their routines, it would be nice if the school acknowledged cheer as a sport.

Currently they view it as an activity.

“I feel like cheer is a sport because we work just as hard as other sports,” Reed said. “We put our blood and tears into it just as much as they do.”

When she’s not involved in cheer, Reed can often be found “going for long walks on the beach or going to the movies.”

She hails Mulan and Alice in Wonderland as her favorite flicks, and also enjoys listening to music, spending time with friends and family and doodling.

Reed is a two-sport athlete, having been a thrower (shot put, discus) and long jumper the last two years at Coupeville Middle School. She plans to try out for the relay events as well this spring.

Whether she’s cheering, throwing or working hard in the classroom, Reed can draw on the support of her family and friends, which is reassuring.

“My mom, Crystal Reed, has had a big impact on me doing cheer with paying for camp and my uniform,” she said.

“I also would like to give a big thanks to Rebecca (Robinson) and Maddy (Aylesworth) for being wonderful people and always being so cheerful and being there for me.”

“Helping people is my main goal.”

Just a couple of words and it becomes crystal clear Coupeville High School sophomore Claire Mietus has big plans for her life.

The Wolf cheerleader, who has been a key part of the squad through both football and basketball season this year, is going places, and her brain is mapping the route.

“I really love science, such as chemistry and physics,” Mietus said. “My main goal in life is to become a cardiovascular surgeon and I would love to join the service organization Doctors Without Borders.”

When she’s not in class, Mietus, a big fan of Mulan and Star Wars, is almost constantly on the move.

The president of Coupeville’s Leo Club, a high school community service organization affiliated with the Lion’s, she also plays in the CHS jazz band and is a part of the school’s Science Olympiad team.

Somewhere in there she’s found the time to reignite her passion for cheer, as well.

After taking part in middle school cheer when she was living in Japan, she joined the Wolves at the prompting of two CHS cheerleaders who graduated last spring, Ciera St Onge and Camilla Rische.

“I started because I really love being part of a team and it’s something that I enjoy putting my effort into,” Mietus said.

While the school officially labels cheer as an activity, those who take part, putting in all the behind-the-scenes work, know better.

“Cheer is absolutely a sport. What other activity throws girls into the air?,” Mietus asked. “I would tell them that we put just as much time and effort into cheer as any sports team would.

“We practice all summer long and almost everyday,” she added. “It’s tough but totally worth it in the end.”

No matter what she’s doing, whether it’s working the sidelines in support of her classmates or sharpening her skill-set for her future, Mietus can always turn to those close to her for encouragement.

“My dad has definitely been my inspiration,” she said. “Being a member of the Navy he has always pushed me and helped me reach my goals.

“Also my team is a big part of my life,” Mietus added. “We really become sisters and without them we are nothing.”

CHS cheerleader Kaela Hollrigel might not be a vampire (that we know of...) but she does want your blood. (John Fisken photo)

See, it's official.

See, it’s official.

Good thing we don’t live in Forks, or this might be a lot weirder…

Anyway, forget about the vampires, twinkly or otherwise, because Coupeville High School cheerleader Kaela Hollrigel wants your blood for non-Team Edward reasons.

The Wolf junior is hosting a community blood drive next Thursday, Jan. 14 (same day Oscar nominations are announced, in case you were wondering), with the proceeds going to a good cause.

Hollrigel, who is trying for a college scholarship, is teaming up with Bloodworks Northwest to put on the event.

All the pertinent details are in the second photo above, so just ignore me now and head back up top.
