Littlejohn swoops to the hoop.

It’s a birthday bonanza.

Two of Coupeville’s best and brightest, Jasmine Melena and Mia Littlejohn, celebrate joint cake days Saturday and the festivities sweep the nation.

The duo are united by the soccer pitch, while Littlejohn is also a Wolf hoops star and Melena has suited up for the CHS softball squad.

Regardless of the field of battle they take, both Jasmine and Mia are exemplary young women, whose personalities bring a noticeable spark to all they do.

Littlejohn is fast emerging as one of the most innovative of all Wolf athletes, a firecracker who never backs down and creates magic on the fly.

From the “Jersey girl” at the middle school level who juked foes out of their shoes, spun them around and left them flat on their butt as she sped by, to the more seasoned team leader she is becoming, Mia is part of the gold standard for Coupeville athletes.

A quiet warrior who lets her skills do much of the talking for her, the Wolf sophomore is on her way to being something truly special.

Melena is an ideal role player, the sort who is always there to support her teammates, and, when she’s not playing, often pops up in the stands at other events to cheer on her classmates.

Jasmine always exudes a remarkably serene spirit, and the Wolf junior is truly indispensable.

As the duo celebrate their big day, we just want to take a moment to pop in and wish them both the best, today and every day.

Happy birthday, and may your futures remain as bright as your present.

Lindsey Roberts: Woman of a 1,000 grins. (John Fisken photos)

Lindsey Roberts: woman of 1,000 grins. (John Fisken photos)

(Amy King photo)

Celebrating with part of her hoops squad after winning the 1A Olympic League crown. (Amy King photo)

She is The Natural. The Chosen One. The Savior.

Is she blushing yet?

Daughter to two former Coupeville High School Athlete of the Year winners.

Granddaughter to a legendary Wolf coach.

Cousin, niece and older sister to a whole host of skilled athletes, all of whom have little to no fear of the camera, as well.

So it comes as no surprise to see Lindsey Roberts lighting up the world, one day at a time.

The CHS frosh, who has already lettered (and been a key player) in soccer and basketball, is about to blow the roof off the joint in track.

Her debut on the high school oval is three days away (Thursday at the Island Jamboree in Oak Harbor), but first, there are more important matters.

Like a little cake day, as she (and grandpa Sandy) share a birthday today.

As she celebrates, we want to take a moment to gush about Lindsey, while not going too overboard.

After all, we have 3 1/3 more years to do that, as she shatters all the records and takes all the awards.

Part of a very impressive Class of 2019 (from Sarah Wright to Ashlie Shank to Kalia Littlejohn to Emma Smith to Maddy Hilkey to Ashley Menges and on and on, the freshmen girls boast one of the deepest classes of athletes in years), Roberts is the early leader.

Not to jinx her, but she’s the only Wolf 9th grader, girl or boy, who remains on pace to win a full 12 varsity letters, something very few before her have accomplished at CHS.

Whether she makes it to the land of Hailey Hammer and Megan Smith or not, she is going to be a delight to watch.

The biggest reason?

Not her talent, which is unmistakable. Not even her hard work and dedication, which bolsters the talent.

It is, quite simply, her joy.

The joy that spills out of Lindsey in great waves whenever she takes the athletic stage, regardless of the sport.

She is a young woman who genuinely seems to love being an athlete, and it carries over to how she interacts with her teammates, coaches, fans and personal photographers.

And we have to mention that, because Roberts is on a very short list (with McKayla and McKenzie Bailey, Lauren Rose, Taya Boonstra and Hunter Hammer) when it comes to lovin’ her time in front of the camera.

She is solid gold, the go-to standard, because no matter if she’s sick, eating or grumpy, she will bring her A-game whenever she hears a camera shutter go off.

Coupeville Sports lives and thrives thanks to Lindsey and her ilk, and it is absolute kismet that, as we lose a transcendent athlete like Makana Stone to graduation, we gain such a bright ball of energy as Miss Roberts.

I can go on now. I have a reason to keep publishing.

Yes, well…

Anyways, I just want to wish Lindsey (and her grandpa) the best of birthdays.

Never stop being awesome, Lou. Just keep on being yourself.

May Rose (John Fisken photos)

May Rose

May Rose is taking over the world.

And the world’s pretty happy about that. As it should be.

The Coupeville High School junior, who celebrates a birthday today, is a winner on and off the field, a young woman whose potential is mind-boggling.

On the soccer pitch, she has taken huge strides every season, rising from a complementary player to a dangerous sniper.

This past fall she blasted home a goal against Chimacum in a 2-1 win that clinched a playoff berth for the Wolves and got the seal of approval from her coach afterwards.

May Rose played lights out; she has really worked hard and improved her game!,” Troy Cowan said. “Her first touch has become a real weapon and she is getting hungry for the ball, which is bad news for defenders!!!”

You notice, he gave her three exclamation points (one more than my typical headline). Nice.

When she’s not rampaging on the pitch, Rose is a soft serve master at Dairy Queen, a proud older sister to fellow booter Taichen Rose and a vital part of The Three Amigos with fellow CHS athletes Bree Daigneault and Ally Roberts.

Oh yeah, and she’s also one of the best in the game on Twitter, where she slices ‘n dices with subtle zingers that leave her foes on the mat, looking like fools.

But don’t let that confuse you.

May might be quick with the wit, but don’t get me wrong. She’s no bully. Far from it.

She has always come across as a friendly, considerate, very intelligent young woman who is supremely loyal to her friends and families, feisty but caring.

Rose is what every coach, every fan loves to see in a student/athlete, and we are very blessed to have her as part of our town.

So, as she celebrates her cake day, we want to send our best to May.

You’re flying high, Miss Rose. Keep soaring. Always.

Jovanah Foote

Jovanah Foote

Jovanah Foote seems to have no fear.

The Coupeville High School senior, who celebrates a birthday today, has spent her final year at CHS taking full advantage of every opportunity.

She’s always been front and center in the world of Wolf cheer, and was a captain in two different seasons this year.

But Jovanah has also jumped at the chance to try new things in her final go-round, playing soccer and running track to keep her senior year a busy one.

On the pitch she became a fan favorite, working as hard as anyone on the team and building a cheering section one game at a time.

When Foote came super-close to scoring this season, Dawn Hesselgrave, mom to Wolf booters Mia and Kalia Littlejohn, about fell off the top row of the bleachers, she was so excited.

And while Jovanah didn’t bring the same years of experience to the field that many of her new teammates did, she more than matched them in enthusiasm and the joy she displayed every time she entered a game.

If you could, you’d like to take every person as they enter their last year of high school and point to Foote and say, “Follow her example.”

Take new chances, try new sports and activities, expand your repertoire.

That way, when you’re a few years down the road, you’ll look back and have more memories, and more positive memories, than if you just lock down and focus solely on grades.

But don’t get me wrong there. I’m sure her grades are impeccable.

Jovanah, like her older brother Nathaniel, comes across as highly intelligent, well-spoken and someone who is going to continue to dazzle folks long after high school.

As she celebrates her cake day, we want to wish her the best.

You have been a bright, shining superstar, Miss Foote, and I have no doubt the best is still yet to come for you.

Kalia Littlejohn, ready to tear up the pitch. (John Fisken photo)

Kalia Littlejohn was born to be a star.

The irrepressible Coupeville High School freshman, who celebrates a birthday today, probably popped out of the womb already looking around for the camera.

She is easily one of the most entertaining of a new wave of Wolf stars, a young woman who excels in every sport she picks up, but also one who seems to be thoroughly enjoying every moment.

Her heart belongs to soccer, and it only took Kalia a year to shatter the CHS single-season record for scoring.

Joining big sis Mia as a First-Team All-League selection after rattling home 10 goals, she helped the Wolves tie a program record for wins and is already hot on the hunt for bigger and better success.

A select team player, she was recently selected for a top-level training program.

In between, she has played some hoops, smashed a volleyball or two, run track and been the focus of about a billion photos.

There is no shyness in the lil’ Littlejohn (or she hides it really, really well) and she loves her photo ops.

Also, having traveled to several games with her and her parents, I can attest to the fact she’s witty, smart and able to go off on eloquent rants on just about any topic.

There are several CHS freshmen with potential to be sports stars, and others who shine in the classroom and boppin’ through the real world.

Kalia is the rarity, a young woman who can, and probably will, conquer every world.

Happy birthday, Miss Littlejohn. I hope your day is as awesome as you are.
